Episode 6
Yoon Jang-hwa's life: YJH has just confessed to her mom that she abandoned Ms. B. Her mom wants her to tell her husband right away, so they can find her, and "he'll forgive you." YJH knows better, and seemingly gets back in control of herself. "It's a problem if she comes back alive. Who knows what she'll say? … She lived long enough … I don't regret it." Then, she herself collapses. She is hospitalized with dehydration, and KTY is called in from his leafleting duties to her bedside; he is unshaven, hasn't changed his clothes and looks terrible. YJH's mom almost tells him the truth, but doesn't. YJH having been discharged from the hospital, KTY makes an effort to shave, clean up, and get back to his normal routine. But he puts a high-class detective agency on the case.
Ms. B is at a bus stop … somewhere. She is looking for the Dragon House, which, she says, is in Yeonamjeong. The driver of a bus that comes by says it's in Ojeong-ri, which is far from there. (There is such a village in Chungcheongbuk province, northeast of Daejeon, for what it's worth.) But two young men, attracted by the jewels she is wearing, take her in tow, promising her a ride… They later dump her out like a dead weight, taunting her heartlessly, having stripped her of her valuables. At a later point sanitation workers at some urban location disposing of a pile of rubbish and old boxes discover her sleeping inside it. They give her a ride on the truck to Yeonamjeong. Filthy, starving, barely keeping upright, she staggers along the path… and eventually arrives at the Dragon House, the house where she grew up. She now moves into the other part of our narrative (below).
Hong Ryeon's life: With her traditional cooking, HR has impressed the judges and is told she got "the highest score." She calls home with the news, but when she actually gets home and looks up the webpage with the results, her name isn't there. She calls the Jomirang company for an explanation, and is devastated by what they tell her. "Someone did better than I did," she tells Gil-ran, but that's not the truth - they wouldn't award her the prize because of her criminal record. As she sits outside, alone, overcome with pain, Su-chan drives up and unwittingly rubs salt in the wound by congratulating her for her win. She has an uncharacteristic little tantrum, but later is cheered up by cleaning up and cooking and Gong-mi's and Gil-ran's antics.
Then a new disaster hits. The head of the agency that rented HR the Dragon House had cheated her. It was actually sold at auction the day before she signed the contract. There is a new owner and she can be thrown out at any time. Coming back from the rental agency, HR and Gong-mi are greeted by Gil-ran who tells them that an old woman has come to the house, claims to be the owner, and is eating up all their food. Of course it is Ms. B. When HR, thinking she must somehow be the auction buyer somehow, protests that she can't just come in and eat, Ms. B calls her a vulgar girl, then grabs her ears and pulls and twists them painfully. This is her signature combat move - see Episode 1. This is not the last time we will see it!
Episode 7
Yoon Jang-hwa's life: YJH calls her long-time beautician and confidante Sara Chang and asks for a contact on the police force, so she can find her mother-in-law before her husband does. Sara gives her the name of Commissioner Park. YJH, while shopping (and using JJH as a beast of burden), calls Park and wants to be informed if any old women have turned up in Chungcheong.
Meanwhile KTY gets a call from his investigator - his mother's jewels have turned up somewhere.
Hong Ryeon's life: Ms. B finally lets go of HR's ears and demands water, Korean pancakes, and rice punch which takes over six hours to make. HR is as compliant as possible, still thinking she must be the new owner of the house, but at length Gong-mi remarks to her that "she seems a bit strange." Eventually they find out from the agency that the real high bidder was one Kim Seongtae, a 40-year-old man in Seoul. She calls Mr. Kim and we don't overhear the whole conversation but it looks like she'll be kicked out.
In the surroundings of her childhood, Ms. B has sort of stabilized as a child of Gilran's age. As she gets some food in her, she becomes less imperious. She says her name is "Princess". When HR says she'll take her to the police station to find her real family, she begs to stay. HR tries to get her cleaned up, but when she uses the shower spray, it sets off a bad echo of the day of her abandonment and Ms. B goes into a paroxysm of fear; she is afraid of the dark and of being left alone.
HR agrees to let her stay the night. Next she goes to see her boss to tell her she's back from the week she took off for the food competition, but her boss has given her job to someone else, a young single woman who is bringing in the male customers. She begs and pleads but it's no use. Back at home, with Ms. B and Gilran asleep, she communes with her mom's spirit and asks for advice. She lies down on the floor sobbing; Ms. B reaches out and strokes her hair and says, "Don't cry - everything will be all right."
The next day she takes the terrified Ms. B to the police station. But she can't stand to leave her there with her unmatched shoes, so she goes to the store and buys her a new pair and comes back to the station and puts them on her feet. And then Ms. B starts to follow her home - and she just can't bring herself to ditch her.
