It's Gang Jo's and Hyangbi's wedding day. We see the ceremony as it begins, with Cheonchu overseeing and what looks to be all of the important civil and military officials present. Choe Hang presides over the rituals and eventually it's done.
"She is truly a peerless beauty." Yunheung is impressed by Kim Milhwa, the woman Wonsoong found to tempt the emperor. (Not to sound like a pig here, but Yunheung is a lot more impressed than I was. Okay, she's pretty, but hardly what I'd call a "peerless beauty.") Wonsoong found her in Gyeongju. Kim tells them that her father worked for the government as an interpreter but died long ago. No, Wonsoong says, "that won't do. You're a descendant of Shilla's King Wonsung from now on." She's going to stay with Yunheung, who will teach her all about royalty so that she can capture the emperor's heart.
Mokjong is suspicious about how Yu Hangan became an imperial servant. Who helped you?, he asks Hangan. Nobody, Hangan says, lying through his teeth; I was impressed by my visits to the palace, and I also saw you were lonely and "wanted to be of some comfort." So I studied hard and when I saw an announcement that imperial servants were being recruited, I applied. Go Hyun confirms that there was such an announcement. That's good enough for Mokjong; he drops his suspicions and welcomes Hangan.
Narration tells us that royal servants in Goryeo were different from those of later Joseon: The men weren't castrated; they often came from higher clans; and had important jobs like drafting imperial orders, managing finances, and even serving as the emperor's eyes to go out and observe conditions in the country.
After the wedding ceremony: The guys are outside horsing around, some weird groom-foot-smacking ritual. (Yes, you read right.) Inside, Hyangbi and Cheonchu talk; basically a good-bye since Hyangbi won't be one of Cheonchu's bodyguards any more. Then back to the men, a bit later; they've been eating the ceremonial dinner. Cheonchu's guardsmen have been drinking a lot; they're nearly all wobbly and visibly impaired. Yu Bang, their leader, seems to be the only sober one. Cheonchu is ready to leave so Yu orders them back on duty. Yang Kyu and Kim Sukheung are with them and watch them leave, visibly concerned about their condition.
Later, Gang Jo and Hyangbi are finally alone; he apologizes to her for making her wait so long. In replying, she calls him "brother" out of habit. It doesn't freak him out, like we might expect; he even laughs and corrects her that it's "husband" now. They take turns practicing calling each other husband and wife. The he takes her in his arms and the smoochies start....
Nighttime, on the road back to the capital: Cheonchu's party is returning, but uh-oh, there's trouble in the woods: black-clad assassins suddenly swoop in from the dark and attack!
And that's not the only action. At Sung-gyo Temple, another black-clad squad, this one led by Sa Gamun, charges into the temple, killing monks and demanding to know where Prince Daeryang is.
Back in the woods: Hyeolmae is with the assassins; this must be the squad of twenty elite soldiers she requested for an assassination attempt. Actually the numbers on either side are a little tough to judge in the darnkess and the chaos, but the fight is getting intense and we do see Goryeans getting killed and wounded. Then Hyeolmae gets behind Cheonchu, who's been forced out of her carriage, and winds up to strike, but gets knocked down by an arrow flying in unexpectedly from the side. Yang Kyu and Kim Sukheung have rushed onto the scene, presumably bringing reinforcements (lots of chaos; it's not entirely clear). Hyeolmae gets up again for a second attempt but gets knocked down again in the nick of time.
Sa Gamun has found Daeryang and winds up to strike him dead. Suddenly arrows start flying in, killing the men flanking Sa Gamun. We see two men: one an archer, the other a swordsman. Yang Kyu and Kim Sukheung were supposed to arrange for expert protection for Daeryang at the temple; this must be it. The two of them charge onto the scene and by themselves are making short work of the assassins, who number at least a dozen. Expert swordsmanship and the best rapid-fire archery we've seen in the series. Sa Gamun regains his focus and winds up again, but an arrow hits his arm and he can't strike. He runs away wounded; the rest are dead. Great job by those two guards.
Hyeolmae is kneeling before Cheonchu; the other Khitans are all dead. Cheonchu wants to know who in Liao was behind this, but Hyeolmae won't talk. Cheonchu tells her this breaks Goryeo's alliance with Khitan and would justify their allying with Song China (Why is she bothering to explain this to Hyeolmae?). Then Hyeolmae suddenly lunges for a sword on the ground for one last swing at Cheonchu; Yang Kyu has to strike her down and she falls dead to the ground. Yang and Kim tell Cheonchu that they saw her guardsmen's condition after the banquet and followed out of concern. Lucky they did. (Anybody else think Hyeolmae deserved a better death than this? A pretty weak sendoff; she at least deserved a high-profile duel or some such thing. And frankly, this whole assassination-attempt business is ridiculous. Liao would never risk starting a second war while they're tied up in one already. They're not idiots.)
"Failed? You fool!" Sa Gamun reports back to Chiyang. None of the bodies are recognizable, Sa Gamun assures him, so at least the attack won't be traced back to the source. Then Sa Illa enters and tells them about the Khitan attack on Cheonchu. This is a real stroke of luck for them; now they can point the finger at the Khitans for the temple attack. A gift-wrapped scapegoat.
Dokyun is tending to Sa Gamun's wound. He tells her how he got it, and explains that the goal is to put Cheonchu's unborn child on the throne. Which puzzles her. He also tells her about Hyeolmae's death.
Gamchan is informed of the attack on Cheonchu. Then a shaken Daeryang is brought in to him, accompanied by his two guards. The guards are identified as colonel Ji Chaemun of the Left and Right Guards, and colonel Ha Gongjin of the Divine Tigers. They tell Gamchan that the assailants weren't trained fighters, but Daeryang is disturbed that so many monks were killed. "You saved the country's future," Gamchan tells the two soldiers.
The next morning's state council meeting: What to do about the assassination attempt? Do we break the alliance with Liao? It's not cut-and-dried; even Cheonchu realizes that they shouldn't rush into anything and will take time to carefully consider what to do. Any other business to attend to? Gamchan reports the attempt on Daeryang's life, which is news and sets the room buzzing. He's safely at my home, Gamchan says, and also says he believes that someone inside the country is responsible for the attempt, not a foreign enemy. Chiyang turns on him, accusing him of "baseless speculation" and saying that the Khitans were the obvious culprits. Gamchan fires back, "They barely had enough men to attack the Empress Dowager. Why would they divide their forces to attack a young prince they have nothing to gain by killing?" Very astute, but Chiyang holds fast, saying they were trying to wipe out the royal line.
Outside in a courtyard: Mokjong is eating and drinking, and is watching young women wrestle! No kidding, it's some sort of team Sumo thing. The winners, he pours a drink for each one. The losers, well, Mokjong tells them they have to jump into the courtyard's pond. They don't want to, so Mokjong runs around and starts grabbing them and throwing them in. The empress shows up and watches this foolishness, and at the same time Hangan reminds Mokjong that it's time to go to the council hall for a state meeting. But he won't go and keeps playing with the women.
Gamchan asks Cheonchu not to send Daeryang back to the temple but to put the boy in his (Gamchan's) care instead. He wants to take the boy out of the capital to a secret place--so secret he won't even tell Cheonchu! She quizzes him about a possible motive for the attempt on Daeryang's life. But he won't offer anything until he has some evidence to back him up. He has to tread very carefully here because of who his suspect is, and as she keeps pressing him he finally has to say cryptically to her, "Your Highness, if one truth is revealed, you will be forced to endure many pains." He asks for her trust for now. Outside, Sa Illa is listening...
...and tells Mun Inui, who reports it to Chiyang. Chiyang thinks Gamchan is getting suspicious of him and even suspects him of Prince Gyeongjuwon's death (he's right). He realizes that Gamchan is becoming very dangerous and a major threat to his grand plan. But they can't act against him right now, Chiyang knows; they need to wait for things to die down.
"It was Kim Chiyang, wasn't it?" Gang Jo is alone with Gamchan and he's figured it out too. Gamchan nods. He tells Jo that he can't keep Daeryang with him because Chiyang "has too many eyes and ears in the city" and so the boy must be taken far away. And then the two of them discuss the serious consequences for Cheonchu if and when Chiyang is exposed for all of this.
At Yunheung's villa: Kim Shimun tells Wonsoong and Yunheung about the two attacks; both Khitan, he says. And fills them in on the emperor's current state--back to drinking and partying again. Kim complains that Mokjong is "soft and weak-willed, and unfit to pursue great tasks." Then the two ask Kim for a favor: bring the emperor to them for a visit, or at least arrange a visit at some other location.
The emperor and empress are informed of the attempt on Daeryang's life. The same thing happened to me, Mokjong remembers (Ep12). He blames his mother for sending Daeryang away to where he couldn't protect the boy. Don't worry, Sunjeong tells him; this was a Khitan action and our military is strong against them. She encourages him not to blame his mother, and to make amends with her and let go of his resentment. Mokjong says he's lost her trust and it's no longer even possible.
Cheonchu is brooding, Gamchan's words echoing in her mind...A thought occurs to her: "Could it be...him?" (Good heavens, a glimmer of clear thinking!)
Wonsoong, Jo Sun and Jo Du are examining another chest of counterfeit coins, probably to pass out as another bribe. Jo Sun and Jo Du are getting concerned about continually doing this, because the marketplace is being flooded with coins and the coins are gradually becoming devalued. And they're worried about getting caught. So they ask Wonsoong to stop producing coins for a while. But Wonsoong doesn't want to; he says he's "about to start a venture that requires a huge budget."
Cheonchu has summoned Chiyang. "Are you hiding something from me?" She asks him point-blank if he was behind the attempt on Daeryang. (No more glimmer. What does she think he's gonna do, smile and admit it? This was a real groaner.) He stays cool and says he has no reason to hurt the boy. But she doesn't back off. "If I give birth to a son, and if you are thinking about bringing that child to the throne, one might say you do have a reason." Chiyang laughs her off and tells her, "This pregnancy is making you overly sensitive." (How does he get away with that? She ought to be biting his head off.) Besides, he says, a child with the surname Kim could never get the Goryeo throne anyway, so it's inconceivable. Then he asks her about her son's health, and all is forgotten as she confides in him about her misgivings about Mokjong.
"I have to leave?" Daeryang is scared and wants to stay with Gamchan, but Gamchan tries to convince him he'll be safer where he's being sent. And I'll keep a close eye on the situation, Gamchan promises. The kid doesn't like it but tells Gamchan he's like his second father so he'll trust him.
Gang Jo tells Hyangbi that Gamchan is convinced Sa Illa killed Prince Gyeongjuwon. Then they discuss Hyangbi's visit to Hangae Temple in Ep19. She went there after the man known as Mr. Chu was killed by a bladed boomerang, after Chu had learned of a violent attack at that temple--an attack ordered by Choe Sum's father while Chiyang was living there as a child. Maybe, Hyangbi speculates, some secret about Chiyang was unearthed by Chu and that's why he was killed. She offers to go back to Hangae temple again and see if there's anything more to be discovered.
Liao Imperial Palace: Su No delivers the bad news to the imperial trio: The attempt failed and all of Shengzong's imperial guards are dead (so that's who they were). PM Han says what all of them realize; they're in big trouble now because just as they're haded to war with Song, now there's a very real threat from Goryeo. Then Yelu Dilie runs in with more bad news: Song has dispatched an envoy to Goryeo with a secret order from the emperor. Han assumes it's to prompt them to attack in tandem. Chengtian realizes the inevitable: "We're in an unfavorable situation, so we'll have to yield." We'll send an envoy of our own, she says....
Choe Hang informs Cheonchu that a Song envoy is on his way and will be here in ten days. And not just any envoy--the Song minister of military! "They must be anxious," Cheonchu speculates.
Kim Shimun has arranged a waterfront outing for Mokjong and is trying to encourage him to get out of the palace and get some fresh air. This is odd, Mokjong says; you're always trying to get me back inside to read and study. So Kim confides that Gamchan's home is near the outing site and you can see Daeryang off before he leaves for wherever.
We see Mokjong and Daeryang alone together. "I will be calling you back someday," Mokjong promises, "And when I do, come back to me and abide by my wish." What wish? "You'll know everything when the time comes." It's a sad scene--two hurting young souls who don't deserve the stress and pain they're facing.
At a gisaeng house: Chiyang has invited Yang Kyu and Kim Sukheung. He's trying to butter them up, and wants to buy them a drink. The two tell him they have training to conduct, but he encourages them to skip it for today. Then gisaeng enter with food and drink. The two officers are visibly uncomfortable, but they stay (Remember, Gamchan asked them to pretend to go along with Chiyang).
Hyangbi arrives at Hangae temple.
At the waterfront: Kim Silhwa has arrived and walks down to the riverbank. Mokjong is there; he gets a glimpse of her and stares, apparently captivated. She looks back at him and smiles flirtatiously.
