I like this guy, nice face, powerful yet restrained, wise but quiet with it.
I'm about to check the spoilers to see if his devotion to Hunae is more than gratitude and loyalty. We already know Kim Chiang is planning to make a move on her and that Gang Jo doesn't trust him. I don't trust him either altho we are meant to believe his motives are pure.
Is there a love triangle coming up? If there is, I have to say I'm not too happy with Hunae's choices so far so she'll probably pick the wrong guy.

Last night (Ep. 21?) after Hunae left the King's Palace and was walking outside with Gang Jo a few steps behind (in perfect sync with her), she stopped to cry at a tree. Gang Jo was about to place his hand on her shoulder but hesitated...and in the distance, Kim Chiang was shown to have seen this interrupted gesture.....

Ye's, mara! That's what gave me the idea, plus the look in his eyes whenever she's around. The actor must really be good. Its hard to convey that kind of complex emotion when your character is supposed to be stoic.

He is really one of my favorites - I assume his loyalty stemmed from the beginning of the drama when she was a young girl dressed as a boy and was in the archery competition when Gang Jo's young sister was kidnapped.....plus I think she might have saved his life, right, puppy?

Forgive me, Mara, a thousand pardons but I had to remove a spoiler from your post. The spoiler thread is the only place where spoilers are allowed. I avoid touching anybody else's posts unless there's no other way, and will not make a practice of it, I promise you.
Especially a cat person's!

Sorry, ajk, didn't realize that I gave a spoiler as I thought Puppy referred to it above.....guess I said a bit too much......really sorry and no problem to your edit......
And by the way, your Episode summaries are truly topnotch! I only get about 3/4 of the show - fifty out of 65 or so minutes - here on WMBC in NY/NJ - so I watch it online, read your summary and watch it on tv - sometimes I do forget what I saw where.....

He's one of my favorites, too. Probably she's too class-conscious to pay him the right kind of attention. Too bad for him, because he's so devoted, and he's strong and nice looking too. (I'm not so sympathetic with her since I found out what she was like for real, but within the drama as it is, they'd make a good team.)

I've read here and there that this drama is way off from the real history of the people depicted in it. Can you provide any website/link where I can get a better explanation of the real Iron Empress? Thanks!

Not much on the web in English and probably avoid Wikipedia . The best thing i have read on her is in Hulbert" History Of Korea Vol 1 "as Hulbert was an English Teacher to the last Joseon Dynasty kings and had access to various records . Hulbert only gives her 3 pages but its worth tracking down . Sadly its a 1905 book they way i got it (for a while )was through the library via inter library loan ,but well worth the trouble .

Last nite we saw Ep 22 here, and Gang Jo, fast becoming my current favorite guy, turns up with long black hair and that top knot. Didn't he just (Ep 21) have short, curly brown hair and a thin head band?

Didn't he just (Ep 21) have short, curly brown hair and a thin head band? Yes, he changed his hair style but I believe a year has passed....so maybe he thought it was time for a new look. And I agree, any look he has is pretty darn good!

yes but sadly he is becoming a love sick buffoon . All that aside the real Gang Jo had no love for Hunae at all ,though one thing both Gang's have in common is a hatred for the shifty Kimmy Sue. Gang was a great war hero of both Khitan Wars though i cant say to much about him cause of spoilers not that this series has any connection to real history save names and places but even so Gang did things that have to be included though i doubt the reasons will be the same . Gang was not from Balhae either he was Goryeon born and raised . other blips The Shillan faction were not Confucian at all they were Buddhists . Lord Choe was a warrior not a statesman and AOW fans should take note as he was the ancestor of some of AOW colorful cast members . Dae Dosu was not a warrior he was a noble in the Goryeo Court

This drama portrays Gang Jo as lover and Balhae warrior who became Koryo general which is totally wrong.
Gang Jo is famous Koryo general, very well known warrior class from Goguryo's general Gang Isik line.
Gang Jo over thrown corrupt king and Kim Chi-yang's rebellion and tried to restored the Koryo court then Khitan invaded Koryo 2nd time. Gang Jo led his army and fought Khitan and died bravely at the war.
His death ended Khitan 2nd invasion.
Then another famous general Gang Gancham finish off Khitan's 3rd invasion by killing most Khitan's army.
