Come awards time, this show won’t hold a candle to the historical dramas (if they’re judged in the same drama category). But this little story of a boxer raising his son with the help of great friends and later, Hari, turned itself into a work of art. Who knew it would go in that direction?
I don’t know where to begin or end with all the things this story left me. Pungho’s grudges for an unforgivable act by Soi yielded to his gratitude to her for the miracle of San; the end of a 7 year relationship became expressions of gratefulness for happiness and love Jiseok (Dr. Jeon) and Soi each gave the other; “uncles” Sangtae and Chilgu in clown clothes at San’s bedside watching Pungho in his last bout; Hari’s memory book and wish list for Pungho; a variety of great music for poignant scenes.
By its end Pungho did the unthinkable by forgiving Soi. Surrounded by people who loved him, he was able to open his eyes and see before him all the people clamoring to love and care for San.
I can’t recall the last show I watched that was led by a child actor with so much face time on the air. As San, he was so natural in his role I was startled to think he wasn’t a real son but only a very, very young actor (he looked about 5).
As each character opened their heart one by one, so mine opened, too. I’m a little richer having seen this show because of the little seeds that were planted of forgiveness, and love in the face of death.
I’d love to give a big shout-out to the writers for their great restraint in the storyline, and the gift they gave this one viewer.
Unfortunately, my videotaping was off and I missed what might have been the last 25 minutes of the show. Unless something was shown in the part I didn't see, Hari was the only one that got cut out of the action, seeming a little bit smaller than she'd been up until then. That would be my one regret.
But still and all, beautiful show, just beautiful…
