ok was anybody else upset that Yi Nok and Gil-Dong were killed? I seriously did not see that one coming. I didn't expect for the "world to change" but I not think that they would die. I mostly thought that Gil-Dong would keep on fighting the nobles and fighting crime with his team. Especially because the first episode showed Gil Dong with a different hairstyle, different clothes and then it goes back to a year earlier. that really threw me off because I thought that it was going to end that way, with them continuing to fight.
why in the world did the prince turn on him? I dont understand what happened? After everything that Gil Dong and his friends did for the prince, the prince has them killed?! I think that the prince is going to end up like his crazy brother, and his bodyguard is going to end up like Gil-Dong's father.
I really liked this drama, but did not like the ending. I have to admit I cried as Hwalbindang stood there looking at the flaming arrows coming their way, the sad song in the background, Yi Nok and Gil Dong holding hands, so so sad!!!!!

Am I the only one who loved the ending? I liked that HGD saved Geom and the Monk. I also thought that it was fitting that Yinok and HGD were married and died together and that the two friends who also got married died together. Remember in those days the people believed in an afterlife so they believed that they would always be together. They did what they had to and were willing to die for their cause. They could have run away when the soldiers were first coming but they didn't. It was a beautiful ending for some very brave people. This is one of my favorite dramas, truly well done.

I totally agree with you, gpaul. The little after-story where the monk-teacher tells the little boy about HGD was like icing on the cake. There will always be another HGD who will fight for the "little people". It was beautiful to see Yinok and HGD holding hands and smiling at each other as the shower of fire arrows flew through the air almost like a fireworks show. I'm glad that I recorded the entire show so that I can watch it again.

According to the Hong sisters, writers of the drama, the opening scene was just a prologue. It had nothing to do with the ending or the rest of the drama.
This was my favorite drama of the year for the first 22 episodes. Unfortunately, the Hong sisters really dropped the ball in the final 2. More than moving or heartfelt, I thought the ending was rather cheesy. I get that they wanted to make HGD a larger than life figure who was out to change the world but he didn't have to die. If he stays alive, he can work with the king to make the world better. I disagree that the king turns on HGD. They turned on each other. HGD turns on the king because he wants a world with no king and/or aristocrats and the king wants to protect his throne. Now, if that's what HGD wanted, then I don't see the point of helping put Changhwi on the throne in the first place. I also don't get how the sword being fake would have hurt Changhwi's claim to the throne. If you look at the history of Joseon, the next in line for the throne isn't always the one who ends up on the throne. Not being the next legitimate heir didn't always stop those before him from trying to take the throne.

For me, the end was overwhelmingly sad (and made me sob!), but made a certain amount of sense, in spite of the fact that I wish it hadn't ended that way.
The one character I empathized the most with was Chang Hwi. I think he really did intend to take the throne and institute a new way of thinking, but was too naive and unprepared for the pressure he would be under from those supporting him to do as they wanted instead. Ultimately, I don't feel he had much choice in both shows of force he made, first with the yangban and his removal of the Sa Yin sword as leverage against him, and then with the annihilation of the Hwalbindang. It's not that I blame Hong Gil Dong for what happened because it's obviously more complicated than that, but I do feel his demands on Chang Hwi were as equally unrealistic (and insensitive to the position the prince was in) as Chang Hwi thinking he would have the power to usher in some grand new era.
Like I said, the ending works for me in terms of the plot. What disappointed me so much about the series, though, is that it started off as such a lovely mix of funny and dramatic and romantic, but over the last handful of episodes it turned so very serious and ugly, and I wish they hadn't abandoned the fantasy aspect of the show.
