I was a bit aprehensive at first, with the battle scene's exagerated movement, but once the actual story began, I was really taken in.
First was just how clear the picture was. Channel 41 should try to get all their shows to look this good. The subs are rather larger than we're used to, which I know will please those with reception problems, but the picture looked so good (at least on my set), they could have been smaller than we're used to, and they still would have been readable.
It's been said that this show was made by an independant production company. I thought it sort of refreshing that it had a different look to it than the usual KBS historical.
I was really tickled by the scene where the young lead (Don't have the names down, yet) was trying to learn the fancy movie-type martial arts moves, but rather than running up the side of the tree and doing a back flip, he just smashes into it, knocking himself out. I know that's the way I'd do it! ;D
I am really looking forward to the rest of this drama. I sure hope I have better luck catching it than I did 'Pretty Insun'.

Yes, I too like this show. I liked the pathos and the little bit of humor regarding the fencing lessons. I thought the fighting scenes were okay - not ovedone on bloody graphics. I do not know how historically correct it will be but as far as a drama, so far so good. I look forward to seeing Choi in his role, which I understand PRECEDED Dae Jo Young. I have high hopes that this will be a real winner. ;D

I hate to be a pain, but would someone be so kind as to give me a little synopsis on what happened? I feel rather embarrassed for asking, but I was hoping to get into this series and I managed a great start by missing the first two episodes.

The Yonjam Character seems very much in the mold of the 17th Century Japanese Swordsman Kojiro but that will decline as the series moves on and the character matures . It has a great fast paced opening and one of the many great aspects of this series . What is great about this is it hooks you from the word go and never lets up .

Sounds like I'm the only one who liked the opening battle scene. Nalbal-don't miss any more episodes! I think you'll love the series. The series just gets better with each episode. Now only if my cable provider would pick up a new Asian programmng station. I can't take the k-drama withdrawal.

Hooked from the word go is right on… Great characters, great action, and the music is excellent. I hear similar melodies to DJY, but since this was made first, DJY must have borrowed from EOS, particularly the middle portion of the opening theme song. I really liked the adolescent actors, and was hoping they would stay on a little longer. More great casting, but I agree with Melissa, that Choi (Goong Bok) does look a little past the age he's supposed to be in these early episodes. Maybe they could have transitioned him in a little easier with no facial hair to begin with like they did in DJY, but I'll get used to him soon enough. Another favorite so far is the master swordsman/blacksmith. I hope we see more of him. And Soju, you're right, the picture *is* better! I wish all the shows looked so good.

I really like this show too!
Zorro- isn't the blacksmith/swordsman the same actor that plays the ex-drunk junior official on King Sejong. I really like him. He's smart and funny! It was kind of sad that had DJY not run away, they would have been reunited.
The opening scene while enjoyable, was confusing me. But I understood it better after watching it carefully a second time. Definitely a show worth watching even if it is two hours every Sunday.

Wow, this show was broadcasted between 2004 and 2005 in Korea. I can't believe it just started in Chicago

Could someone tell me what Jang Bogo's childhood friend kept calling him in the early episodes? It must be some kind of filial-type endearment. Is the word like "son?"
I bought the DVD. The whole production is great. The choice of modern music along with more period-type music really speeds the plot and action along.
Choi is a great actor but miscast in this production. I had read the criticism before watching the production and was ready to disagree with the criticism. As much as I admire his acting, I have to agree with the criticism. However, in his defense, the make-up department dropped the ball creating his youthful appearance and wigs. DJY make-up people were much more successful--and DJY was years later.
