I want to get this up so you have it for this weekend, but I need some of your help.
First, if you see threads you think I should transfer to this forum, please let me know where they are. Another mod or I will move them. Second, I know this is replacing Pretty Insun and that two episodes will be aired each Sunday, but I'm guessing at the times. If you have better info, please post it here and I'll fix the forum header.
FYI, I'm not sure yet who the mods will be so I put knov1 and me. That may change. Do not be alarmed. I hear this is a great drama. Film at 11. Or 6. LOL.

This was on AZN two years back and i thought it was pretty amazing . Think Dae Jo Young meets Yi Soon Shin only better than both . One of my all time favorite Historical K Drama's . There is a nice (with decent subtitles) W/S DVD of this too (the AZN version was fullscreen ). During the AZN run i tried to come up with some historical info on both Jang Bo Go (Chang Pogo )and his nemesis Yomjam but as usual (avoiding wikipedia )with most books on K History ,i could only find a paragraph here and there . One of the (in my opinion )strengths of this drama was it ran 50 episodes thus moving fast and not overstaying its welcome . You guys will see many scenes and plot lines that were used in Dae Jo Young and Jumong (as well as the two lead actors Choi and Song Il Guk )but remember this came first . When this ends (in about 25 weeks )id love to hear how you guys think it compares to DJY and Jumong and IYSS . I think its better than all but thats just me . For those who love soundtracks this has a killer score .

I have this on DVD and can you believe I haven't finished it?!?! I got it when IYSS and Hwang Jini were both on. I was trying to watch this on the weekends too and getting myself all confused and mixing up the dramas. KDrama overload, if you can imagine that. This may make me watch again. If I can't catch the episodes on TV, I can pop in the DVD to keep up with everyone else watching.

I have this K-Drama on DVD and it's my second favorite drama after DJY. It is definitely better than Jumong but it cannot be compared with IYSS because it was the most historically accurate drama I have seen (it was almost a documentary). There are few historical records about Chang Pogo's life and EOTS is based on a novel by author Choi In Ho. However, I have found this site if someone is interested in real history....... english.changpogo.or.kr/html/birth.htm

I've heard that "Emperor of the Sea" is a good series, and was considering recording it on cassette to watch at my own convenience (and right off the bat I missed the first two epi.'s! WONDERFUL start!). I'm still not decided as I'm already watching "The Great King Sejong", and I usually find it hard to concentrate on two historical series at the same time. However, I have a weakness for the warrior-centered series, and while watching GKSJ I have sorely missed the sword-swinging action. I'll watch the first few episodes and I'll make up my mind then...

Nabal, you can watch the episodes you missed at dailymotion.com. Just search for Emperor of the Sea.

Joanie and I watched this a couple of years ago and there's a lot to like about it. For anyone who misses an episode, you can rent EOTS at www.koreandvdmovies.com/ (Check the DVD Region before you rent any movies, though. Most are Region 3) On the last DVD, there is a special (featuring Chae Sira) that explains that the show is meant to be an attempt at what the producers call "Fusion", a combination of historical drama with modern touches. Does it succeed? Overall, yes, in that the direction and script are unusually good and the acting far surpasses DJY and most modern dramas, and it's an interesting window into what being a merchant must have been like. However, the "modern" touches diminish the series overall. The main love triangle in particular is preposterous and drove me nuts by mid-series. If you didn't find Chulin from DJY irritating at all, it might not bother you, but if you did, prepare for a very, very high level of residual irritation. Also, the ending episodes aren't too satisfying, even for a K-Drama. One very pleasant surprise in EOTS is Kim Ah Joong (who played Jongnam in the Bizarre Bunch). She's great in this series! It's hard to believe she's the same actress who rankled me so much in that other show. P.S. - It's good to see the board back up!

So well stated, Ken.
isn't the pirate guy the actor who plays the Minister of Rites in King Sejong? And isn't one of the actresses the woman who played the main role in Love Letter? I just never NEVER tire of enjoying the versatility of these actors.
And Nalbal... if you get on overload watching 2 historical dramas as the same time, can you image the transition that these actors have to work on when playing characters that are so opposite of each other. Gotta love it.
I kinda needed to see some warriors and man, did I EVER get to see some great battles in those 2 hours on Sunday evening. I usually get excited watching Iron Chef America at 8:00pm but not last Sunday. ICA was almost Disneylike.
I'm not sure about the love triange... that must come in a little later. While she irritated me in the beginning, I really came to like Chulin.
Anyway, EOS already has my 5 stars.

This is my favorite historical drama. Every episode keeps you wanting the next and doesn't drag on too long. I haven't seen IYSS but I did enjoy it more than Jumong and Dae Joyoung.

I'm surprised they rerunning this show in Chicago; it's a rather old (relatively) show. I saw this show about four years ago and it was pretty good. I don't think I would say it was better than IYSS or Jumong but very good still. For me, it's better overall than DJY because there were some episodes in the middle of DJY that didn't seem to go anywhere. I think the actor that really shines in this show is Song Il Guk ... he's really great as Yeom Moon/Yeom Jang (that's his later name) because even though he's on the side of the bad people, you will still feel for him. I always found the first several episodes to be a bit slow but it picks up by the teens. Enjoy, you'll like it. I think one of the neat things about this show is that there are some really strong and interesting female characters. Also, I'm sure people who've watched DJY and IYSS will note that many of the same actors are used in this show. For example, the actor who played Sa Bu Go plays Yeom Moon's henchman... he's really good at being bad as you might expect.

;D Episode 6 just finished and I am still very interested and liking this show. I have not found it slow going at all. As a matter of fact, this is one of the few that I've been able to make sense of the plot and characters from the beginning. I hope it continues to be as interesting as it has been so far. Good action and good acting. Ill be watching it to the end, I hope. ;D
