My eyes are full of tears, my heart is heavy. It's hard to imagine that any story can take the place of Dae Jo Young. (I felt it deserved to be written out, instead of abbreviated.).

I wish that I knew how to transfer taped recordings to DVD's. If so, I would be able to record the entire show, missing perhaps 2 or 3 episodes.

this end was truly amazing ;D i like how it all came full circle with the stele at the end. Goem, i have so much mooore respect for him. he is such a good guy. i had a feeling that sukyoung was going to regret her thoughts about goem. this was a great drama! thanks to everyone for the great discussions throughout the series! ;D

Can you tell me how the stele started the series, making the end a circle? I missed the beginning of the series.
I had a few thoughts about the end. First, I loved how Dae Jo Young forced Li Wen to admit defeat and call him Per-ah, begging for amity. The whole interaction was great: with Li Went not speaking while the rest of the group begged for mercy, the stare between him and DJY, and the difficulty Li Wen had swallowing his pride before he finally succumbed.
Then there was the emotional scene where between Dae JoYoung and Geom when they finally call each other father and son. Very moving (lots of tears), but.... There is a saying that something done once is tragedy, but repeated twice is comedy. When DJY struggled before he got out the word "son," it was very powerful. But when Geom had the same struggle to say "father" -- I couldn't help it, I was torn between tears and laughter. In the end, the tears won out, partly because of the intense acting. But it was close!
I was so happy the SukYoung recognized her own "lack of virtue" in relationship to Geom. She said that she accepted Mimosa's final advice to her -- to accept that DJY would make the best decision -- but you could tell that wasn't in her heart.
It was also touching -- and a bit of a surprise -- to hear Dan talk about "brother Geom." I felt the writers could have done more with Dan near the end, especially in relation to Geom, but his discussion with his father at least brought him back into the story more forcefully.
Does anyone know if the last 2 episodes of actors talking, etc., will be shown next week?

#134 was just terrific. Between that one and #133 you wonder why they all couldn’t be that good. It just makes the series’ inconsistency all the more frustrating.
The events in these last two episodes were enough to fill a dozen interesting episodes if they had expanded upon all of the references and developments. Not only that, but we saw a lot more depth in some of the characters than we had seen. Watching Li Wen have to humble himself and swallow so much pride, and seeing the empress have to face up to the painful reality of her and her empire’s failings, you could really feel what they were going through and it made both of them seem so much more compelling as characters than the one-dimensional “bad guys” that they were for most of the series. We saw some new facets from DJY and Sukyoung, and even Jang Sanhae confidently objecting to a royal command was a good twist and made him more than just the faithful subordinate we had seen.
The whole idea of Goem just going off into the countryside, that was a bit odd. I sure expected that they’d kill him off before the series ended, and I completely wrong—they even built him up at the end and showed us a lot more wisdom and intelligence than we had seen before. Why do that and then just turn him loose? If this were American TV I’d say they might be planning a spinoff series with Goem as the main character. But whatever the reason, I didn’t mind it. We don’t need to have every loose end tied up. The idea that life goes on and some questions remain unanswered, I like that.
The only weak moment was when DJY tastes the rock salt and they ask him, “How does it taste?” and he says, “It’s very salty.” (No question, whoever wrote that is the early favorite for the 2008 Nobel Prize in literature.) But even that, you could just laugh off. And having the prominent Gwanggaeto reference in the final scene, that was just outstanding. A very, very smart move. I couldn’t think of a better way to end the final episode.

The events in these last two episodes were enough to fill a dozen interesting episodes if they had expanded upon all of the references and developments... ; I really agree with you about that, ajk. It's frustrating when you consider how good this series could have been with a little more care and better direction. The one thing the final 2 episodes did that was sadly lacking in most of the rest of the series was to establish the historical context. There were WAY, way too many weeks of Li Kaigu acting rash and completely without subtlety and with closeups of Shin Hong and Chulin with their sour looks. The actress who plays Chulin wins my award for most one-dimensional performance by an actor in a K-Drama. I've never seen such a one-note performance sustained for months like that. Thanks to her and the Honginator, the irritation level of this show was by far the highest of any historical drama so far, even surpassing Dawn of the Empire and Hwang Jini. The story told here could have been told in 40-50 episodes easily; there was simply no reason to pad it out that much. Overall, DJY was a great disappointment. I'm a little puzzled by the positive reactions, as the show was very weak in so many respects, even though the series had many of our favorite actors. Hopefully, the next one will be an improvement...

At first, DJY named his newly-established country 'DaeChin(Great Chin)' but soon after Balhae (or Parhae depending on transcription) replaced it. As for the exact locations of the battles between DJY and Tang, there are some contraversies, but at least the final battle (Chun-mun-ryung battle - although I don't know how the subtitle transcribes it) is approximately considered to have taken place in the blue region on the map below.

The KBS e store have episodes up to 116 for sale .
I have a question are these downloads or actual dvds ??
Anyway im still at 125 with about 4/5 weeks to go ,and than that gap in my life comes >
This is (was )a great show flaws and all .it would be well worth putting on dvd ,though i doubt KBS will put out the full 134 episodes (not counting the e store ) i heard they were thinking of doing an edited box set as they did with IYSS .

what did everyone think of DJY's attempt at humor? ;)the whole salt scene that was pretty funny It was an amusing moment. I loved when DJY said "Rock salt? Y...you mean salt that's rock?" with a quizzing look on his face. That was so cute... especially when he tasted it. Mimosa: "Well?" Sukyeong: "What does it taste like?" Dae JoYoung: "...." Mimosa: " Pay-ah?" Dae JoYoung: "It tastes... salty. " I'm going to miss this series. I have several episodes taped, mostly showing the ones of the main characters' deaths (I have Gaepilsamon's, Heuk Sudol's, Geumlan's, Dae Jungsang's, "FeatherDuster" Xue Rengui, and the last epi). It's always hard for me to say "good-bye" to a good series, especially historicals.
