Both of these women can really fight ,in fact their fighting skills have been very impressive and their sheer fierceness ,at times they easily overshadow their male counterparts . Its funny both of these women are pretty much ice queens showing little emotion if any but when it comes time to pick up a sword they get so energised ,their singular enthusiasim for a good scrap knows little bounds.
Yet they have never faced each other ,if they did who would win ??

It's funny you should mention Ice Queens because that was my first thought of Chulin. She might shed tears a lot but she gives off that cold heart vibe to me. Maybe it's because I like Geumlan better. I think it would probably be a standoff with either one giving in or winning.

Somehow I never thought of Guemlan as cold. She doesn't talk very much but her face is expressive. I like Chulin but she's the cold one. And so mercurial!
But of the two, I like Guemlan more. I felt really sad that she and Biwu didn't get to spend even a short time together. In a contest, I'd said she would win. Biwu said she is braver and stronger than a lot of men he knows. He's not the kind of guy to sweet talk the ladies!

That's an interesting question. They are both wonderful fighters, but I think that Chulin could have the advantage as she is older and is more experienced. Yes... if I had to choose, I'd probably go with Chulin.

Fighting scenes in these historical dramas do not particularly interest me except for the occasional one-on-one because they stretch reality far beyond what's reasonable....People surviving deep sword thrusts in their back and multiple arrows in the chest....Warriors (especially the women) seemingly endowed with super human strength and epic battles that display a cartoonish quality to them....Personally, I have a softer spot for Geumlan rather than for Chulin, but I don't think any of the two could hold a candle to my favorite old-school female martial arts action star, Angela Mao-Ying.... She also had the benefit of training, being proficient in Hapkido.....

i would say Geumlan, easily. ...all she has to do is say "Dae Jo Young was talking about you this morning..." to Chulin, and Chulin will suddenly become daze & confused.
Then Geumlan will strike the killing blow while Chulin has an emoitonal flashback.

I think they would fight to a draw. However it would be cool if they fought near water, maybe a river or a waterfall. Even have a duel during a rainstorm with lighting coordinated with their sword strikes. Of course the lighting would'nt hit them. ;D ;D ;D

Good one JP! Chulin probably would have a flashback and her eyes would shift back and forth. ;D Jebu, a storm with lightning in the background would make an interesting scene.

That's a fun question, domyoungchun--I'm still waiting for Chulin to teach Sukyoung to sword-fight (and my offer of a week's pay to see that happen still stands!), but this would be interesting too.
I think Chulin is probably a little past her prime physically by now--she must be close to 40 at least. Geumlan seems to me to be at least ten years younger, maybe more. If they were both at their peak at the same time, I think Chulin would whup her. But right now in the series I think Geumlan would have more endurance and would wear Chulin out.

I have to agree that Geumlan would win a fight between her and Chulin. The girl knows how to fight.

I hope the next historical drama I watch will have better fight scenes....*wishful thinking* next historical drama isnt going to have very many fighting scenes King Sejong the Great, currently being broadcasted in Korea after DJY ended, is based on King Sejong the Great, who ruled the most peaceful era during Chosun dynasty. I'm not watching any Korean historical dramas right now. I'm not interested in anything if it isnt about a war lol

Ohmylgod, captainscarlet, Angela Mao! I didn't think anybody remembered her. Whatta pistol she was, right up there with Big Daddy Bruce Lee. I'm intrigued by these women warriors in K-dramas. How do they get to be fighters? Do they have to be born into a certain clan (Khitan?) or can anyone join? I like that the women in DJY run the gamut from mothers to queens to soldiers to the ladies of leisure in Tsiu Sing Lau (sp?) It seems that 6th cent BCE Asia was more advanced in matters of gender equality than 20th cent USA. As to the Chulin/Guemlan face-off: I'm not a big Chulin fan. Her face is kind of wooden. Whether she's in love or angry or unsure, all she does is cut her eyes like a cartoon Wiley Coyote (sp again) and she swings a sword (sexist alert) LIKE A GIRL! She's also too wavery (is that a word?) She loves DJY/she wants to kill him;she hates Kaigu/she marries him. Guemlan is a one-directional gal - Mimosa and his just cause is what drives her. That sort of devotion leads to victory in a fight, I think. Plus, she's the better actress. I wish she'd gotten the Chulin part.

I like Angela Mao but if i put her resume up against these lady's being ESTUKO SHIHOMI MEIKO KAJI JUNKO MIYAZUNO JUNKO FUJI . REIKO OSHIDA But also im not watching DJY for realistic fighting i have(had ) FURIN KAZAN for that (God i miss Kansuke already ) But DJY can be so over the top i love it and its intentional i think . There is a lot of over acting ,plot holes and moments that defy reason and i think thats the game plan it works for me .

Thats confusing lets try again ,Angela Mao could fight but she made not very good films compared to the ladys i listed above .Etsuko Shihomi i probably think was the greatest fighting femme of all time ,just see her in the ''Yagyu Conspiracy" or "Shadow Warriors" tv series .
Kaji has some great films under her obi like "Lady Snowblood" and her role as a female Yakuza in the" Lone Wolf And Cub" TV series was pretty close to perfection .
Fuji well the Red Peoney Lady Gambler series .
And Mizazuno "Quick Draw Ohatsu "
