In the past:
Late 1994: Jeong Tae-hoon tells Kang Oh-soo and his buddies not to harass Kim Yeong-cheol. Oh-soo kills Tae-hoon with a knife; Hae-in discovers the scene with her special powers. Oh-soo's friends, Soon-ki, Dae-sik, and Seok-jin, are suborned by Mr. Kang, and claim that he was defending himself. Yeong-cheol, who witnessed the killing, is also silenced. Rookie reporter Seong Joon-p'yo writes an article at the behest of his uncle, the principal.
Four months later (12 years before the beginning of the action): After Oh-soo is exonerated, Tae-hoon's mother dies in a traffic accident. His brother, Tae-seong, runs away and hangs out with fellow runaway Oh Seung-ha, who has left a Catholic orphanage to look for work to support his blind sister, Seung-heui.
Two months later (spring 1995): Seung-ha is killed by a truck in front of the Dongmun store. Tae-seong assumes his identity; henceforth, "Seung-ha" refers to Tae-hoon's brother.
In the intervening years:
Cha Kwang-doo, who investigated the case, leaves the police force and goes into law.
A repentant Kang Oh-soo joins the police force.
Kim Soon-ki is in and out of prison; Yoon Dae-shik goes into loan sharking. Seok-jiin becomes private secretary to Heui-Soo.
"Seung-ha", destitute and malnourished, is taken under the wing of Soo-gon, who works in a cabaret. They become "like brothers"; he apparently also becomes familiar with boss Kyeon. Then he studies law on his own and passes the bar exam. He works for Kang attorney Kwon for six months. Later he hires Cha Kwang-doo as his office manager. Over the years he helps Soo-gon to become a prosperous farmer. He sets Seung-heui up in a fine nursing home and poses as her brother; she ignores her doubts.
Joon-p'yo writes an article that slanders Hwang Dae-bil and his father, leading to his father's disgrace and suicide
2004 or so: Joon-p'yo is ruined by Kang's libel suit.
Over the years, Jo Dong-seop receives the "destiny" letters in prison; Hwang Dae-bil also gets such letters. Kim Yeong-cheol was in Australia for part of this time. Later he got a job with the publishing house that employs Joon-p'yo.
Just before the action begins, Soon-ki is convicted of a homicide of some kind. Lawyer Kwon, his trial lawyer, won't take the appeal; Oh Seung-ha steps up to take the appeal.

* Yes, the biggest problem with this whole thing is that Soon-ki's bail hearing is on a Saturday, but it really does seem to be the day before the church service. As for Seok-jin getting the pictures on a Sunday.. maybe it was slipped into the mail the night before? It isn't possible that there is really Sunday delivery in Seoul, is it? I'm not absolutely certain the writer took great care with the days of the week....
