Jini discovers the joy of dance for its own sake, unencumbered by tradition, costume, makeup or choreography. The musicians jam for what was probably the first time in their careers! What an inspired dance! So unexpected! Just like Jini herself. Booyang finishes strong and becomes the chosen leader while Jini is relegated to being a common prostitute. Is this true or just drama? This was a beautiful, inspiring tale of the artistic life, but very sad. The costumes, hair, and makeup were out of this world. I really liked the music, too. I'll miss Jini! Is there a cd for this program? Are any of Jini's poetry translated into English? I loved the selections used in the program and would love to read more.

Is this true or just drama? Purely drama. This was a fictional tale about Jini. Very little is known about Hwang Jini so the story had to be made up much like DJG. Is there a cd for this program? Yes, and it can be purchased at annyoung or yesasia.

I don't think she became a common prostitute. The contest ended with Mayheong (sp?) saying Jini was the best artist/dancer, so it looked to me as tho she could have the troup's sanction to be an artist. She was wearing an immaculate white jacket and furry vest, not starving anymore, so maybe she still taught gisaeng sometimes and performed in public places sometimes. ? Maybe it's just wishful thinking.

I think the ending was beautiful. I'm going to wishfully think that in their service to the people, at some time Jini and the Minister will again cross paths. Maybe they will not be "married" again, but will retain some sort of friendship. This thinking is allowed since the story although based on a real character, is not necessarily historically correct.

Maybe it's just wishful thinking. I think that she probably had quite a bit of her own money. Remember early on in the series the men were talking abou how expensive Jini's company was? How she'd take houses as payment? I think she had a fully funded 401K! ;D

^^^ Haha.
Don't forget that the troupe leader had no knowledge of what Jini had been up to while she was away honing her craft -- Jini appears to have continued her own spirit quest, if you put the images of her dancing outside the troupe before and after the contest side by side. So a little descriptive langauge here, a little dancing as commoner artist, there ...
I think it was a good ending, it seemed to hint at Hwang Jini's character from what you can read in her poems. Thinking outside the lines, that is. Goodness knows if a real woman put in those shoes in that era would opt for such a choice.

Does anyone know what is scheduled to replace this drama? On TAN, "Hwang Jini" was replaced bye "Dalja's Spring," an offbeat kind of comedy-drama that's way different from the usual KBS fare. If it shows in Chicago, it's absolutely worth checking out.
