Yes, it's true! If you are enjoying this show as much as it seems many of you are, you will not want to miss this opportunity to meet Ms. Nam Soon-In, direct from Korea. Ms. In is considered a national treasure in Korea, as president of The Institute of Korean Traditional Culture, but she also choreographed and taught the actresses to dance in Hwang Jini. During her portion of the evening, Ms. In will perform some of the dances of the period as well as showing some of the actual hanboks from the show! The other two speakers, Dr. Sun-Oak Choi and Dr. Kyu-Young Park, will be discussing the changing roles of Korean women from the Yi (Chosun) period through today. There will be a light dinner served before the program, so come early. The entire evening should last about an hour and a half, but you'll still want to set your VCR to record that evening's HJ episode. I know that the weather has been dreadful, but it should be a great event and if you've never been out to see Super H Mart, here's a good reason to go. I hope to see you there and I'm sure that you won't leave disappointed. Ms. In will be coming direct from Seoul to perform some of the dances from the show, as well as exhibiting various wardrobe items from the production. Dr. SunOak Choi, M.D. will present a view of the life of women during the Yi Dynasty (1392-1910). Dr. Kyu Young Park, Ph.D. NEIU, will provide commentary on the ever changing role of modern women in Korean society, post 1910. I was just thinking last weekend 'we've not heard from CaptainVideo for a while' and here you are this morning giving us this wonderful, just WONDERFUL opportunity on March 1 (TH) ... seeing the dances live and hearing the explanation of the dances by Ms. Nam Soon-In ... what a beautiful evening lies ahead. I so love living in Oak Park.. but alas, getting to HMart is so out of the realm of my reality . but I will look forward to hearing all about it on March 2.

It just occurred to me that simply modifying the post would not alert people to the fact that I had found out the correct information. Therefore, I have decided to add this post to accomplish that task and to say hello!^^ Stay warm everybody, and don't shovel the snow too quickly. ;D

I actually don't think I'll be able to make it. I have seminars to attend every Monday and it would be darn near impossible for me to go. I just got so excited at the prospect of going that this completely evaded me reasoning. BUT a million thanks for even offering to give me a ride. Much appreciated. Have fun though, Teacher and Kathleen34.

Hi Bungalodweller- Just a note to tell you that I sent you a PM, so as not to bore the other members with our possible conversation. Are you planning on going to the lecture on Feb. 26 at H-Mart?

No, Monday nights are out. My kid studies ballet and that's one of the nights she's at the studio. I'm sure the program will be outstanding.

I'm still hoping to attend the lecture at H-Mart tomorrow night. It will all depend on the snow, ice, and or slush conditions. Kathleen, are you still interested attending? If I go, my offer of a ride still holds.

Well, just a brief update on the festivites from Monday night: I learned some very interesting facts about life for women during Hwang Jini's time and about Hwang Jini herself, got to see one of the actual hanbok from the show on a beautiful young lady who did a dance for us and the food was good. Oh, and I met DramaKaren and her two daughters (one of which is a fan of the show and shall go on to become hopelessly addicted like the rest of us ^^)
Okay, for the benefit of anyone happening to read this, I learned that the little knife that the women of the period wore (the thing with which Hwang Jini cut the strings of her instrument early in the series) was used as a weapon, not to defend against an attacker, but to commit suicide in case the woman raped or her honor was violated in some other way. Also, the reason for having these women's services was not in additon to, but rather as a replacement for sexual intimacy at home. For some reason this relates to Confucian ideals and there is also a connection to the manner in which the first Yi Emperor siezed control of the throne (through a coup d' etat) which resulted in this rampant parnaoia in order to maintain control. Aigu, aigu..........

I was glad that she mentioned such a small detail as that personal knife. It's the same one that I had wondered about in another thread because Eunho's mother had thrown one to him so he could kill her but it seemed so small! Dr Sun Oak gave away the ending of the show! I covered my ears so I didn't hear the spoiler. The hanbok was so beautiful and the girl was so petite. I guess Jini must be petite too though I had thought of her as an average sized girl.
All in all a very interesting lecture. I enjoyed the last speaker too. She even answered a couple of questions on current Korean women's issues for me afterwards. Had a fun time shopping the Super Hmart afterwards though they didn't have the two things I really wanted.

That was such a nice evening. The girls and I really enjoyed the event. Like CaptainVideo mention, that was so nice to see the beautiful dancer perform in the hanbok. So much food, and very good......We also learned how the young women of that time could not go outside until they got married. Of course, we had a lot to talk about on the ride home. The women of that time had it so rough....CaptainVideo, it was nice to meet you, that was fun to meet someone from the board.....I viewed Hwang Jini differently tonight after all I learned Monday night.
