I may not remember it all, but DJ carries Chulin back to her sick bed in the temple and asks Sukyeong if she would care for her as a personal request from him. Sukyeong agrees, but is bothered that he would ask her to care for a Tang spy. DJ leaves to return to the fort, and when Chulin wakes up and see SY she thinks she's dreamed it all. SY asks Chulin why she didn't reveal that she knew DJ, and that if eyes are the mirror of the soul, then DJ has Chulin in his heart. SY is clearly bothered by this, but because DJ saved her life twice, she will honor his request and her debt will be paid. Meanwhile Namgeom overpowers Namseng's fort and puts everyone including DJ and the civil officials under arrest. The only one to escape is Gulsabiwu, who bides his time, and just at the right moment, creates a diversion to free DJ and escape on horseback presumably to go warn Namseng. DJ however can't leave without saving Chulin and maybe even Sukyeong who have been ordered to be killed by Namgeom. Miraculously they show up just in time to thwart Sa Bagu?? from carrying out Chulin's execution. This was immediately after Sukyeong risked her own life to allow Chulin to make her escape in the forest. As Sukyeong follows the chase to see what has happened, she arrives just in time to see DJ and Gulsa make off with Chulin and ride away. She looks distraught, as it's clear DJ and Chulin have a connection she covets. I probably got some of the names wrong, but you get the idea. I was making dinner as I was watching the show. Thanks for the recap. I came in right at the point when Gulsabiwu escapes and came back when DJY was peeping behind a tree at a horse-riding Chulin. What I don't understand is why Sukyoung would allow Chulin to escape.

My satellite broadcast of DJY is lagging two episodes behind the Chicago airings, so I’m afraid I can’t participate much in the current discussions with all you Chicago fans. But, while I like Chulin (she’s a wonderfully, spirited character. She’s also a very hot babe) I have to ask: does she really serve any function on DJY, aside from being a romantic distraction for our hero? Personally, I wonder if this is why DJY is dragging for me. The “history” part of the drama (which is what I mostly care for) seems to be taking a back seat to the show’s somewhat marginal (and presumably fictional) side-shows. I’m not automatically averse to a historical drama having a fictional element. After all, “Jumong” is about 90% hokum, and yet I’m very much enjoying it. But, if the writers are going to add fictional sideshows to a historical tale, those fictional elements had better add some genuine interest to the show. And the Chulin subplot just isn’t doing it for me. It not only seems irrelevant to the central plotline, but it’s also simply unbelievable. Of course, the portrayal of Supreme Commander Yeon as some kind of mental case had me scratching my head, too - but I guess that’s another topic.

What I don't understand is why Sukyoung would allow Chulin to escape. Sukyeong promised Dae that she would hoor his "heartfelt" request to pay him back for saving her life twice. She tells Chulin that she would not have complied if they weren't in the house of Buddha. I think maybe if SY cares for DJ she might want to help him so he's happy, but that's not obvious at this point. Chulin better ditch that bright white outfit. She's just asking to be caught again.

In last night's episode, she was still inquiring about him, etc. I thought she would know by now that he is wavering in his duties because of the enemy. I don't understand how he can still have a clear conscience after he's HIMSELF let the enemy go free. He's no one to judge Namseng for his actions. Namseng is betraying Goguryeo for power and DJY did it for his love for a woman, a love I don't quite understand, and as mikey said, is "simply unbelievable".

Lots of interesting viewpoints. I half expected to get barbecued by at least a few people who love the Chulin angle, but it sounds like nobody is exactly captivated by it and some people, if not many people, are fed up with it.
BAE made a good comment about Gulsabiwu. It's a nice piece of acting; you can tell from his face that when DJY starts going bubbleheaded about Chulin, he just wants to smack him. (Or maybe I just like it because I agree with him!)
And I think Mikey's right about it dragging down the show. For me the show started out very strong, then it went through a less enjoyable period where it was like they were trying to turn DJY into James Bond. Then it got VERY good a few weeks ago, during Yeon Gaesomun's last days, and now this Chulin thing is really starting to get in the way. Without risking a spoiler, all I'll say is that the scene in Ep. 27 with the rock-throwing was utterly preposterous--not just the action but the obvious consequences to DJY. We'll see if he ends up paying the price.
Now if it were up to ME to write the show (and goodness knows I couldn't do it) and I had to find an interesting love-interest angle, I'd have given Bu Kiwon a servant girl and had DJY get to know her as they grew up. That could have worked well with the larger storyline between the civil and military sides, much better than the notion of DJY falling for an enemy. Oh well, maybe it will evolve into something better as the series continues, or maybe it will fade as DJY becomes more powerful and other storylines emerge.
P.S. If Truth's post is correct and Namsan doesn't appear in the series, what a shame. How much that angle would add. Plus, from what little I've been able to learn on the Internet, I thought that Namsan was actually involved in the power struggle to some degree in real life.

It was weird. Namsan should've been "there" like ages ago!
You've got some wild ideas, ajk! Bu Kiwon and a servant girl!

My satellite broadcast of DJY is lagging two episodes behind the Chicago airings, so I’m afraid I can’t participate much in the current discussions with all you Chicago fans. Don't let it stop you from participating...just let me know if people aren't posting episode #'s....i ask for that so that if i fall behind, i won't read any spoilers...this board isn't as active as IYSS or Age fo Warriors, so i don't think you'll fall too far behind...i'd love to hear your insights!

Thanks, JP. Even if I’m lagging behind you guys a bit, you can bet that it won't stop me from displaying my ignorance around here a time or two. ;D

Ha. Hardly ignorance. Is it me, or does it look like Chulin and her cohort could just squeeze between those jail bars and escape already??

Gee, if they squeezed through the bars they might mess up their fancy duds! Isn't it amazing how those Khitans so far from home, with no obvious means of support, always have such nice clothes--and immaculate too. (What was that old Calgon commercial about an ancient Chinese secret?)
Is it just me, or did anyone else think that Monday's episode 31 was VERY strong and that the Chulin angle not being in it helped?

Is it just me, or did anyone else think that Monday's episode 31 was VERY strong and that the Chulin angle not being in it helped? It must be just me, because I think the last 2 episodes have been a let down. Too much Boo Boo Kiwon and not enough action. Why do they make Gulsabiwu look like such a dufus with Heuk Sudol? This isn't the 2 stooges, but that's what it looks like at times with these two. Very insulting to Gulsa. DJY has been almost an extra in these last two eps. I hope they step it up tonight and have him save Yang from Sa Bugu, or something. I'm getting bored with all these sitting around the table scenes, but like I said, that's just me.

It seems to me that Sa Bugu is the person who looks like he could be cast as the fourth stooge.

It seems to me that Sa Bugu is the person who looks like he could be cast as the fourth stooge. If only he were as ineffective. I hope he gets exposed soon.
