So what happened to Xue Rengi, Li Wen and Hongpei? I sure hope Li Wen got what was coming to him.

Re: Ep. #110--AZN had this episode tonight and it definitely was very emotional. Can you imagine how Geom felt when he finally heard the truth about his real father? Everything he had known his whole life was a lie. Of course, Mr. Opportunity, Xue Rengui, had to show up to stir up the pot a little.
Hope you all have a healthy and happy New Year!

I was disappointed in the way they wrote off Chulin. She could have died at war. Chulin had always lived for Geom so why would she commit suicide and ask DJY to look after their son? Sure she cares for Li Kaigu but I can't see her being so passionately in love with him that she can't live without hiim. It was a nice final statement by Li Kaigu to DJY before he died. In a way, he is a better person in the sense that he knew Geom was the son of his mortal enemy, yet he raised and loved him like his own. I don't see DJY and Sukyeong doing the same in a reverse circumstance. In fact, Sukyeong is always frowning and shooting nasty looks at Geom from the corner of her eye (may she go blind soon!). I didn't see the complete series so I'm not sure why mugwump is hoping that Li Wen gets what's coming to him. I thought he has been very devoted and loyal to Xue Rengui? But of course, everyone on this side is a blastard bastard

Sheila, I totally agree that this is not the way Chulin should have died. We're up to only Episode 86 here, but I haven't seen much evidence of true love for Li Haigu. It has always seemed she's being a loyal wife because he's kept his promise to protect and raise her son, and also because he's spent his life fighting for Khitan's interests. Any love would have been the affection she felt for him when they were growing up together (more like brother and sister). But maybe this changes in later episodes.
As to Li Wen, he's one of those characters you love to hate. He's got a smarmy smile and continually thinks he's going to outsmart and outfight Dae Jo Young. But on every occasion DYJ humiliates him, he loses another Tang army, and he has to go back to Xue Rengi with his tail between his legs. This usually leads to an entertaining scene of Xue Rengi smacking him around and telling him to go to his room without supper.

I like that description of Li Wen! Xue Rengi smacking Li Wen and his sidekick (Hongpei?) are scenes I just love to watch. Xue Rengi is such a loveable villian.

Haha. Li Wen... He.... He use to be the most hated character in this show by me. But once he served under General Xue Rengui he's an ok guy.
I have ot agree with Sheila Xue Rengui is a VERY lovable villian. Lol.
Hong Pei and Xue Rengui is like the perfect team up as well X3.

Before, he was cruel when he didn't have to be, so I hated him.

to steal from jochicago's post "What I want to know is how DJY managed to avoid a fight with Muchuo (sp) the Turk?"...How di they avoid a fight? DJY sends Geom and Xu Rengui sends Li Wen to the Turks to try to get an alliance with them. Muchuo asks the 2 ambassadors to debate on why the Turks should ally with their side. Geom's points impresses him. Plus as he said, the Tangs betrayed them twice. As they are leaving the Turks camp, Li Wen gets the news that Xue Rengui is dying. He rushes to his side and bluffs him that the Turks agreed to be their allies and fight DJY. He says the Tangs will remember Xu as a hero. Later, Xu confides in Hongpei that he knew Li Wen was lying but was touched that he wanted to comfort him with this lie. I just saw the final episode and felt it was a bit of a let down. Geom decides, for DJY's sake that he should leave Balhae. There are some like Biwu and Tongu (?) who see Geom as the natural successor but others who think it should be Dan. Geom does not want DJY to be in a bind. He said he would return after the new kingdom is more established and DJY is in a stronger position. I felt at the end of the show they should mentioned who the successor is and whether Geom returns. Although we know that the real successor was not named Geom or Dan

Isn't that being a little too harsh, as if Lady Sukyoung had done wrong to anyone.....Her feelings and reactions are reasonable given the circumstances that she had to endure. And Li Kaigu claiming to be the better person because he raised the son of his mortal enemy as if he were his own....The only silver lining in an otherwise dark and evil cloud. To suggest that DJY and Lady Sukyoung would not have done the same is purely a subjective point of view because I don't see a hint of the same level of evil which dominated Li Kaigu's character. The man was so blinded with hatred that his own quest for revenge is what led to the conquest of Yingzhou by the Turks. In contrast, both DJY and Lady Sukyoung possessed a a large reservoir of compassion and good will, virtues found totally lacking in Li Kaigu.

In contrast, both DJY and Lady Sukyoung possessed a a large reservoir of compassion and good will, virtues found totally lacking in Li Kaigu. I’ve re-read my post. I didn’t say Li Kaigu claims to be a better person because he raised his mortal enemy’s son like his own. What I said was I felt he was in that one aspect; the way he loved Geom like he were his own, knowing who Geom’s biological father is. In one scene, DJY asks Chulin how she managed to keep Geom’s parentage a secret from Li Kaigu and was stunned to learn that Li Kaigu knew from the start and protected Chulin and Geom and loved him as his own. Before he died, Li Kaigu saluted DJY. I was waiting for weeks for Li Kaigu to die and I thought I would jump for joy. But maybe it was his final words to DJY, Geom defying DJY’s order and rushing to be with him (and Chulin) and Chulin timing her suicide so that her soul crosses over at the same time his does, made me feel that while he did some pretty evil deeds, he was not a completely evil person. And I believe my statement about DJY and especially Sukyeong was very clearly meant to be read as subjective. Of course we would not know for sure as they are not in quite the same circumstances. Just on one hand you have Li Kaigu who loves Geom deeply and then you have Sukyoung who casts nasty looks at Geom. Biwu warned DJY that Sukyoung and Mimosa are having one too many meetings about Geom. He asks DJY to openly declare Geom his son and successor. Finally, to your objections to “May she go blind?” – ever heard of tongue-in-cheek? Sheesh!

Well, it sounded to me more mean-spirited than tongue-in-cheek....Li Kaigu was as proud, evil, ruthless, and hateful as one can imagine.....And he got his just desserts.....The man just couldn't put aside differences even when it would benefit his own people.....
