so, what's the deal with public baths?
I know they were a big thing in ancient times in Rome and the such. But, at the risk of sounding culturally ignorant, is it a sign of economic issues in places like Korea? I've noticed them on most other dramas. And I know I've seen the inside of an occasional home bathroom in a drama or two. So I know most homes on these shows seem to have one. But, I've noticed, most seem to have mainly a sink and toilet. Are shower/tubs a luxury or do they just not show them? And is this why there's public baths? Like, I though the public baths were more like huge saunas, but they seem to be more than just that. Do I sound ignorant?

I've wondered the same thing. jiminyK In Who's My Love the family was always talking about going for a bath and they had a pretty nice building ... owned the whole thing .. and then some people would stay at the bath overnite. when they were upset with family members. Maybe someone will respond to this.

Oh, yes, jiminyk, please don't do double posts like that. It is really confusing for the members, and it is considered very bad manners on the Internet. Sort of like spamming the board, y'know.
There is a Korean public bath here in Chicago--I think it's called Paradise Spa. Also, there used to be several public bathing facilities in downtown Chicago. My boyfriend used to go to one with his dad, and by his description, it was "old guys scrubbing each other down with bunches of leaves"--lol. I can't imagine. I guess it was sort of like those old movies with the mobsters meeting in the steam room...

sorry! sometimes, you know, you see something on a show and it sparks a question, but it isn't necessarily about that show? So sometimes I don't know exactly where to post the question. And if it's not specifically about that show and you post it on that show's board, maybe someone who doesn't watch that show might have an answer, but won't even see the question because it's posted under a show they do't watch - and vice-versa. Maybe I just answered my own issue! Anyhoo, learn something new each day...didn't know it was looked at as being like spamming Sorry again
