I posted on another thread about the little notes that would sometimes appear along with the subtitles on some of the earlier shows (when they were on ch.28) and the discussions that ensued about 'little things' that stood out on the dramas - usually cultural things - that are 'foreign' to many of us viewers...things like the use of ajumma and oppa.
So following a wise suggestion, I wanted to post my burning question here...
In the beginning of Pure In Heart (PIH) many of the characters, would comment on the way Gukhwa talked...about her accent or dialect, whatever u want to call it.
Since I don't speak the language, I couldn't understand what they meant.
And it's not any easier with the subtitles since, as is usually the case with translation, you can't always find the true-to-meaning/exact words to express things
Can someone give an example of what Gukhwa could say, or how she would have said something that would have been a dead give-away that she was a 'farm girl'
Like one scene I remember - and I know this will be a stretch since we've come so far from earlier episodes - was when she first started working as Yunhu's secretary. He corrected her when she was replying to his instructions and told her she couldn't talk in her dialect in his office.
I guess, being a girl who's roots are from the South, I relate to this even more. But just in general, not understanding the Korean language anyway, you don't really know the little clues in Gukhwa's speech that give her away. And it's really fascinating to me.
And I guess seeing these little idiosyncrasies of one culture and their dissimilarity (and similarities!) to 'American' culture, and having somewhere to discuss them is the most rewarding!
