Well, I guess it depends on how one defines “psychopath.” Just about every full-blown dictator probably has a few loose screws, but it was always said that the North Korean Kims were unusually unstable. And yes, it’s true that the son (Kim Jong-il) really seems to win the psycho award - even worse than his father.
But, are the stories we westerners hear about the Kims true, exaggerated, or outright fabrications? Recall that most Hollywood movie portrayals of Adolf Hitler illustrate him as a screaming, wild-eyed lunatic - almost a buffoon (I think the American TV drama “The Winds of War” was one of the few that illustrated Hitler as an intelligent, ruthless, level-headed dictator - which, I suspect, is probably closer to the historical truth).
So, I found it fascinating that South Korea’s KBS also decided NOT to portray the elder Kim as a nutcase, but rather as a brutal - but capable - political and military leader. Given the sometimes harsh relations between the North and the South, I think this kind of objectivity on the part of KBS is praiseworthy.
And, as an aside, I was also a little surprised how dramatically this drama series changes in Episode #2. It’s now nothing at all like Episode #1. Still pretty good, though.

I never knew this was airring! When is it airring? Well, it depends on where you live. I'm viewing it in Arizona by satellite ("The Asia Network") and cyuser is watching it from somewhere in Europe. I also think Los Angeles viewers are getting it over-the-air on KBS-LA. But, if you live in the Chicago area, and you're watching broadcast TV (KBC) you aren't getting it. At least, not yet.

I live in Atlanta and we have our own Korean station due too the areas sizeable Korean population. And because of this, I get to watch Seoul 1945 all the time and it's one of my favorite dramas after Goodbye Solo, Thank You Life, and Summer Scent.

Wow, I didn't know that Atlanta was now getting KBS dramas! Welcome to the club! It was just a few years ago that Chicago, Los Angeles, New York and Philly were the only American cities with Korean broadcasting. It's been a slow road, but it looks like K-dramas are FINALLY starting to get the recognition they deserve here in America.

This is like the 2nd or 3rd time that I've completely forgotten about our friends on the Islands. Sorry!

If you're seeing it now Mikey, that probably indicates that we will have the opportunity to see it a few years down the road here in PA.

It seems according to this: www.wybe.org/week5.html the people of philadelphia will be getting to see Seoul 1945 starting this friday, after IYSS finishes. This is excellent news, though sadly this means they won't be airing the two special episodes of IYSS (eps 105+106)

My sister came in and watched the first episode with me, and we just LOVED it! I mean, it was really good, I mean...EVERYTHING was great to me. I thought the plot is kinda soap-operaish, but the story moves so fast it doesn't feel like it. It has the kind of pace I loved about YSS. I had a feeling it was done by the same producers, I just had that feeling.

Here in the Philly WYBE broadcast area we will be up to episode 7 on Thursday, July 27. It has replaced IYSS. There is not much discussion on the local board yet. But this looks to be a good one, for sure.
I taped the first 4 episodes, watched the 5th and forgot to set the VCR for #6. Looks like I might have missed a lot since the kids seem to have suddenly grown up! Can anyone here fill me in?
EWG was phenomenal; IYSS was fantastic but I think I am going to like this one too - a very different kind of story and historic yet contemporary.
One thing that did kind of jar me was that I was watching this program and in the real world outside my home there werer some very sad and scary things happening onc again in the North.
