Hello, jerseygirl, and welcome (boy, we’ve sure had a lot of Jersey-area people visiting us lately)! Which station are you watching from, NYC or Philly? Either way, remember that Chicago is a few weeks behind you, so do try to avoid spoiling things for the Chicago fans!
If you’ve gotten into “The Bizarre Bunch” midway, it no surprise you’re confused. ;D A whole lot’s happened in the first 40 or so episodes. Yes, Jongnam is NOT biologically related to her “mother.” Jongnam is an orphan, and (unless some secret about her parents is yet to be revealed) she has no family.
Jaeok (her adoptive mother) probably felt an instant attachment to Jongnam when she discovered that Jongnam was friends with her late son. So, ultimately, Jaeok ended up adopting the orphan Jongnam as her own daughter.

And there might be a secret about the son, known by Jong-nam and her ex-roommate. We discussed earlier whether or not he really died. It would be too cruel if they let Jae-ok think he's dead when he isn't, but we just have to wait to find out.

The story of Jong-nam and Jae-ok:
When the show began, Jae-ok was in a deep depression from the loss of her son, and the family was worried, since she wasn't opening her restaurant. Min-sook visited her and there was nothing in the fridge and spoiled rice in the rice cooker.
Jong-nam was riding her scooter by a store and saw a scarf in the window, which she remembered Min-woo (Jae-ok's son) wanted to buy for his mother. Jong-nam bought the scarf and gave it to Jae-ok, saying that it was from Min-woo.
Min-woo appeared to Jae-ok (he frequently did so in the beginning), and told her "Be strong, even when I'm not around." She decides to open the store.
Later, Jong-nam has been robbed of her savings, and sees a 'help-wanted' sign on Jae-ok's restaurant, and asks if room and board comes with the job. Jae-ok takes her in, and lets her sleep in Min-woo's room.
Jong-nam has been telling Jae-ok that she is a student, and that her parents are in the USA on business, but Jae-ok is suspicious
Jong-nam is concerned that Jae-ok cannot let go of her son, and erases the answering machine message that Min-woo had recorded. Jae-ok is furious, and kicks her out. She realizes later that she misses Jong-nam, though.
Ki-woong finds Jong-nam working as an advertising dancer, and tells Jae-ok, who comes and gets her. Jong-nam is all sullen and defensive, and finally admits that she has no parents. Jae-ok says "But you do have a mother; you're talking to her right now."
After this, Jae-ok packs away all of Min-woo's stuff from his room, and Min-woo stops appearing to her. She declares that she has adopted Jong-nam as her daughter.
