Waa-it! What if he had a FIRST wife? Hmmm?
By the way, spicy cabbage, you might be able to redeem yourself. Go to the thread about "bad weather" and read what I've written there.

I think the bankruptcy was a sham. He pretended that they were wiped out and had lost the house and the building and all of their possessions in order to make his wife realize that being poor was not the worst thing in the world, to get her down off her financial high-horse and see that although Jungwoo's family was poor they were still decent, respectable people. In Monday's eps. after Seo-young's mom said she could make it for a month on $700, Seo-young's Dad said something like "She's .....(something)......faster/better than I thought" I was on the phone and couldn't really read it all, but it seemed to me like it was something he had planned..... Did anyone hear what he said to her?

Did anyone hear what he said to her? This was the first episode I watched live instead of recording so I can't be sure but I think he said that she's learning faster. It certainly left me with the impression that he made the whole thing up so that she would accept Jungwoo and Seoyoung as a couple.

I'm glad this topic was brought up because I kept thinking it was a little odd that Mr. Jang always seemed to have money (albeit, not tons of money).....but----- For a guy who was supposed to be bankrupt and is not working, where is the money coming from?? On tonight's episode, Mr. Jang gave SeoYoung's now-engaged pregnant girlfriend/roommate/co-worker a sum of money as an engagement/wedding gift, saying he had basically stashed it away. If you are bankrupt, how can you still have assets saved for a rainy day? ?

Mr. Jang (not Kang--that's Hyesun's name) didn't have any trouble increasing his wife's allowance, either, from $500 a month to $700. And Mrs. Jang and the nephew keep wondering why Mr. Jang leaves the house every day at the same time as he used to when he was going to work. He either has people to meet or he's going for a walk.
I loved how Jungwoo went shopping with Mrs. Jang and taught her how to haggle--that was cute. The lady selling vegetables or whatever told him one pound wouldn't be enough for five people, and he said "You look like a generous person, so I figured you'd give us a little extra". And she said to Mrs. Jang that she must be proud to have a son like Jungwoo! And Jungwoo told Mrs. Jang to buy mackeral instead of the more expensive fish. He had Mrs. Jang positively beaming by the time Jungwoo took her home.

Wow. I can't wait to catch up now that my TV/VCR is set to the right time.
I had a thought. What if he really DID go bankrupt, but subsequently discovered an extra income flow? (Like Alistair did on As Time Goes By.) What if he kept it secret until he could know for sure how it would work out? And what if he saw how his wife was improving her outlook, and decided to let things ride for awhile just to see what happened to everyone, as a sort of life lesson. This would not be so mean as pretending the entire thing happened when it didn't, and it certainly would fit better with the type of person he is.

Bo That's a good explanation, Bo, it covers his shock at his friend's cheating him, too.

it certainly would fit better with the type of person he is. Bo I agree.... Mr. Jang is one of the kindest characters in the drama, such a sweet father and so amazingly, eternally patient with his arrogant and condescending wife, too.....although she is starting to actually be more human now that she has been knocked down a few pegs, social-status wise.

I know what it is from my studies, but not from personal experience ... otherwise, I'd be happily retired and spending my riches I'm just one of the masses who goes to work day in and day out to pay his/her bills, and that won't change anytime soon

Right- you got it!
How about that nephew Kibeom goading him? Not the polite behavior I'd expect. Maybe the Dad should have explained more. Altho his motive should be obvious, after the mom said to set the wedding date-she has changed a lot.

What I'm wondering is how Mr. Jang is going to tell the rest of his family. I thought he was going to have a real heart attack at the table when Kibeom began to talk about it. I think Mr. Jang is likely to get his head cut off when he finally lets the family know--unless Mrs. Jang has really, REALLY changed.
