Sorry for the Third reply, but it seems Hanbooks.com is the best. What should we put in the email to them concerning the pre-order of the sets?

Ducky: I was more or less kidding (although I probably will snap a few captures of Nalbal to stare at!) but I appreciate the help. I'll definitely check those links out! I'm a bit of a neophyte, so hopefully they're written in layman's terms.
Guy Incognito: Yes, AsianDB charges $40 to ship both boxsets together using standard AirMail. They offer other (faster) forms of shipping, but those will cost even more.
I agree that HanBooks.com is probably the best way to go, as long as you don't mind sending your credit card information via email. Here is the response I received on how to pre-order when I wrote:
Hello, Yes, as you already know, this series will be released on DVD around 8/16 in 2 DVD box sets (See below). Sales tax will apply to the orders shipped to California (8.25% of product price). If you want to place an order for this title only, please provide us with the following information so that we can process your order:

I recently came back from Korea literally 2 days ago. Of course, I purchased the box set (Took me forever to find it, even in Seoul.) Overall the best DVD purchase I've made my entire life..But, the only thing that made me mad was that they cut out Yi Soon Shin's child hood and early adult life and instead made a 10 minute or so montage, than the real thing starts during the events leading up to the battle of Nok-dune, when Yi Soon Shin is made Captain of Chosan Fortress. I forgot how sad it all was, I'm a typical male..but it made me..ergh..I had something in my eye..R.I.P. Beksu, you did a wrong thing..but I understand why you had to do it../cry

DVD set is now available for sale at DVDfromKorea!!! Too bad it was edited down to 33 eps. (I guess most of the youth episodes are gone.) I think I might have to bite!

One other question, with HanBooks can you order by phone? Sending creditcard information by email is ridiculous nowadays! They should at least get a paypal account or something.

and they cut out the childhood crap too! Frankly, I think the "childhood crap" was one of the things that made the series worthwhile. Moreso the character developement, getting to understand the people through watching them grow up and evolve. Sure it was mostly fictious accounts, but it was entertaining and moving. For me, that's what makes watching a TV series or film so good. Taking all those episodes away makes the program rather tedious, in my personal opinion. I cried when I got to hear the opening theme music again, after 9 months, but then it skipped everything I missed (and was hoping to finally see) and went right into the historical re-enactments. I was thoroughly disappointed. Don't get me wrong, I don't mind what some would call the "dry" military moments, but I also do not believe that's what made IYSS so darn good! I also feel that removing all those crucial character moments and diving headfirst into the historical truths makes these DVDs rather meaningless for newcomers to the show. I think unless you saw the series in it's original 104-episode format and fell in love with it (as we all here did) then the DVDs will not have as great an impact. In fact, I think those who are not familiar with Admiral Yi Sunsin's great feats in history (newbie Americans, for instance) will find the show confusing, and ultimately boring. To those looking for a good TV show, that is. History buffs interested in learning about Korea's past might like it. *shrugs* In other words, I think the DVDs cater to those who've already seen the series, and the Korean people. If you're not one of those, then I don't recommend purchasing the boxsets. And I am REALLY unhappy that they cut out Nalbal's introduction scene. I kinda expected them to take out child-Nalbal, but the handsome adult version follows the Admiral throughout the entire series - how could they not introduce him?! Everyone new to the show will definitely be confused about his role now. Nope, not happy with the edited version. The special features do not make up for it, either. The OST is perfect, but I'd rather my missing Nalbal moments back... But hey, Teresa, at least there's a nano-second interview with Lee Han-garl on the behind-the-scenes! It's not much, but damn does he look sexy in black!! ;D My only hope now is that someday - even if it be years and years away - they do release all 104-episodes. So I can once more watch the awesome IYSS as I believe it was meant to be seen. And the original Making-of would be nice, too. God Bless you Choko for giving us the news (blows her a kiss). Hey, I told everyone about the Twitchfilm.net news link first! So I only managed to report the eventual release of the boxsets here (and everyone got miffed 'cuz they didn't come out in July like initially reported) while Choko saw the actual release first and posted. Sheesh, I miss one day of being online and I get no thanks.

THEY DON'T SHOW THE INTRODUCTION OF ADULT NALBAL? Forget that. LOL.
So, not only do they cut out his childhood, but they cut out all the stuff YSS goes through at the pottery? The attack of the Japanese and everything? What's the point of that? I guess if you didn't know Nalbal was from his town, the part where he dramatically says, "I am Nalbal," would just fall, you know, flat. Like, "O-kay. Turning slowly, walking away..." LOL.

I should warn I will mention SPOILERS to those who haven't seen IYSS. ... And yet for you people, it won't matter. Because what I will mention will not be available for you to see on the DVDs. More's the pity. So, not only do they cut out his childhood, but they cut out all the stuff YSS goes through at the pottery? The attack of the Japanese and everything? What's the point of that? I guess if you didn't know Nalbal was from his town, the part where he dramatically says, " I am Nalbal," would just fall, you know, flat. Like, "O-kay. Turning slowly, walking away..." LOL. Nope, Nalbal's youth and introduction all gone. Not only that, but they also edited out nearly all of his stand-out moments, as well. The scene where the Secret Squad infilitrate the Japanese camp, and that episode ended where it looked as if Nalbal would be caught, is gone. It's no longer a key scene, even. Do you remember the touching death scene of Soon-shin's mother on the ship en route to visit her son? As she's dying in Chung-hyung's arms, she takes Nalbal's hand and, thinking it's Soon-shin, says how she can die in peace knowing he grew up strong? Yeah, that's deleted out too. And search as I might, I haven't seen one of my all-time favorite scenes, either; the one where Nalbal and the Secret Squad are beating up the Japanese prisoner, and Soon-shin takes him outside, demanding to know why he took part in torturing him. And sadly, Nalbal says: "What made you think I wouldn't feel rage, too? The Japanese killed my parents, my friends..." Considering the extent of that character's removal, I'm assuming that's edited into oblivion, also. And yet they left in gisaeng Chung-hyung's introduction, as well as her stand-out moment with Wakizaka (where Lieutenant Lee rescues her). When her character kinda fades out toward the close of the series, whereas Nalbal is there right til the end. And Kohei is left in entirely, although his youth as potter Jang Pyung is totally gone (a few flashbacks remain, but nothing substantial). Explain to me why they deserved to stay in the program, despite much amiss, but Nalbal is cut down to nothing but Soon-shin's shadow, doing nothing but fighting? I am not at all pleased. Not to mention I feel really badly for my sister, who wanted desperately to see the whole series since I enjoyed it so much. She worked until 10-11pm the days it originally showed here, and she missed about 90% of the episodes. But now when I let her watch the DVDs, she gets so bored and confused, she has no desire to sit through the 33 left. On top of that, she loved Captain Han Baek-rok, and was devastated when she missed his death scene in the series. Granted, it was an umimpressive narration, but the moment leading up to that was tragic - when Won Kyun orders him to vanguard the attack on Pusan. And guess what? That's all gone, too. The scene with Won Kyun is shown in the beginning, but is cut off before Han's protest and order. And later on in that newly created episode, Lt. Lee is frantically trying to get the other commanders to see the light against Won Kyun, and Captain Ki says: "Do you want to end up like Han?" Um, yeah. If (like my sister) you never saw the original lengthy version, how on earth are you to know what DID happen to poor Captain Han? (Actually, I think newbie's query would be: "Who was Han?" Since many of his scenes are cut down, too.) To KBS I ask, why pay to make 104-epsidoes if you're not gonna bother to release them to video? I understand their dilemma, but I for one would have rather they waited to recoop and then put out DVD boxsets. Instead of trying to appease the eager fans with this, what feels like a documentary at times and a live-action of the man's war diary. I am so angry about this chopped version that I feel it was NOT worth my $200. All the scenes that I recall, from battle sequences to second-long character moments, are either gone or seem so much shorter - it's so sad. At first I was excited just to have anything, but now... I think I should have purchased the first collector's boxset of Jumong instead, and continued my hoping and praying for DVDs of the ENTIRE IYSS. Siiigh. I am done whining now, sorry.

i don't know about you lot, but i got my dvds on sunday and i spent all the time from then til now bawling my eyes out. it was so worth it and i love the soundtrack. the opening theme has been playing in my car nonstop.
sniffle
and as someone who is more interested in the admiral as a historical character, i am sad that nalbal and a few choice moments are cut out, but for the most part, i hated how the series portrayed the admiral in his youth and it tainted the series for me knowing that it was not in accord with history. so the battle scenes are enough for me.
it's so nice to have totally clear reception and no annoying commercials at key emotional moments...(the korean station always inserts them at the WORST possible times)

I going to have to agree with Heather on the DVD set. Even though I have not seen the actual DVD set, from what Heather says, it seems emasculate the heart of the show. It has now become just a series of battle reenactments. Fortunately for me I have the complete 104 episodes that I can watch whenever I want. Just wish I could buy the OST seperately. Oh, don't buy the 1st Jumong DVD set if you need subtitles because there isn't any!!

Let's keep this ball rolling and hope it gathers lots of interest. We all miss our Immortal Admiral. In purchasing DaeJangGeum for $240, I too, felt it was worth the investment. Come TaxReturn2007 I plan to dedicate funding for IYSS. It's wonderful the things you pick up the 2nd ... or 3rd time around About IYSS... I think it was Nalbal's childhood that brought me into this drama. So I'm sorry that part is missing along with the others stated above. Very informative postings about the DVD sets ... thanks
