Kevin Brown has really settled down over the past couple of weeks. Mariano made it interesting, but in the end that cut fastball is still very impressive.
I was amazed last night at the sentiments expressed toward A-Rod (in my immediate vicinity). One Yankee fan said about him, "this is the last person I want hitting in a clutch situation," pointing to his performance, or lack thereof in last year's ALCS. He went on to say, "He's the $25 million man, he should perform in every series."
Someone should tell these fans that they have a 200 million dollar team, and they should all perform for every series.

Day to day, a glaring problem with A-Rod is that, for the "good" of the team, he is playing a defensive position for which he is clearly not suited. Despite the historic media emphasis on slugging, Yankee fans like defense (baby-boomer-age fans have been especially spoiled in recent memory at third with Nettles, Aurelio Rodriquez, Mike Pagliarulo, Charlie Hayes, Boggs, Brosius, etc.) so A-Rod is getting the business from the fans for his shaky everyday defense and for the fact that his post season offense so far has been tame. This is a team with legendary archetypes at most every position so current players always have to take their lumps. A-Rod, because of his salary and deference to Jeter (does anyone want to tell Derek to start taking some grounders at third) is the current scapegoat for frustrated fans.

Hey, I remember Mike Pagliarulo otherwise known as "Paggs"

Speaking of bygone defensive prowess, during a period when Pags was hurt and the Yankee roster otherwise devoid of third basemen, superglove (and lefty thrower)Don Mattingly brought his wrong-sided throwing self over to third base and made a number of sparkling plays despite the overwhelming disadvantage southpaws face at that position.
Longtime White Sox fans might remember their slick fielding first baseman, Mike Squires, another one of the very rare breed of lefthanders who could pick it at third base when called upon.

One could easily make the case that David Ortiz is one of the best clutch hitters of his generation.
The man doesn't seem the least bit intimidated by the big moment.

Ortiz is certainly a guy who is not to be underestimated. He is a polished hitter.

Pedro has been great Skinz!
It's a shame that they've dropped these last two.
Had some good chances to take them.
By the way, if Pedro is Mayor, then David Wright should be his chief second. That kid is something else! I don't know how long his current contract is, but the Mets should lock him up long term.

The Yankees have triumphed over the mighty Pirates. All the Yankees posters are in bed after this struggle of Titans. Big Z is coming tomorrow (Friday). Get ready! It's time for a rollercoaster!

Svetlana, what team do you like? All right, the Yankees did well last night, but thr Cubs are going to pick it up today (Sat.) Why we got Enrique Wilson, I don't know. Come on Yankees fans, it's too quiet. Incidentally, I see no White Sox fans here. Come on and post. I'll be nice. GeneralDu, speak a few syllables.

I'm sure the Yankees would be glad to give you Tony Womack if you'll return Enrique Wilson to them. Wilson is a fine player off-the-bench. There's always the temptation to make that kind of player a starter and the results can be a tough to live with. Last year Miquel Cairo became the Yankee starter at second over Wilson . Both were allowed to leave and replaced with the punchless Tony Womack, whose offensive inoffensiveness is now magnified because the Yankees are playing him in the outfield!

Generaldu, I am speechless.... All right, I can still use my fingers. You could have lit me up, and you are not doing it. Anyway, OK take him back. What a crummy representation our Cubs gave you. I was truly unhappy, particularly Sat. & Sun. Next year, it will be better. Maybe we could have a plan to take our folks to the Cubs Yankees next year.

I don't think Yankee fans are in a mood to gloat because our team has developed serious flaws (especially on the defensive side) and we're not sure Torre is the kind of manager who can push the right buttons in this situation. I think he's much too deferential to veteran players whose skills are beginning to fade.
One issue that isn't talked about much is Jorge Posada's quietly diminishing stature as the Yankee catcher. While he has always been capable offensively he has not shown adequate progress defensively nor in leadership and now pitchers such as Randy Johnson prefer to throw to the light hitting John Flaherty instead.
I think we were all expecting Posada to be the next great Yankee catcher but his problems with the leather bar him from entry into the "Yankee's Catching Pantheon" of Thurman Munson(1xMVP), Elston Howard(1xMVP), Yogi Berra(3xMVP) and Bill Dickey(0xMVP only because he played in the shadows of Gehrig, Dimaggio, Foxx and Greenberg).
