Na Dae-Yong (1556-1611) photo always by courtesy of Choko Na Dae-Yong was a native of Naju, Cholla Province. In 1583, he passed the Military Examination. In 1591, he became Lieutenant of YSS in Left Cholla Navy and he worked for the Turtle Ship building with him. In real history, he particiapted in the battle of Okpo, the 1st battle of YSS. But in the drama, he did not. (Episodes 61-62). He was wounded in the battles of Sacheon and of Hansan Island. In 1594, he was appointed Magistrate of Kangjin (Cholla Province). From the information I found on Internet, it is said that he also participated in the battles of Myungryang and of Noryang. But I'm not sure of it. Anyway, His name is not mentioned any more in the war diary of YSS after Early 1594. In 1610, he was appointed Magistrate of Namhae (Kyungsang Province) and he designed new ship models and built them. In 1611, he was appointed Navy Commander of Kyung-gi Province, but he couldn't leave for his new post because his ancient war wounds became aggravated and he died soon. * Related link : Historical Na Dae-yong posted by Daemado

Yi Ok-ki (1561-1597) photo again by courtesy of Choko Finally, Young Admiral Yi Ok-Ki makes his first appearance in Episodes 53-54. About Young Admiral Yi, Jk has already posted an information on other thread. I would like to add some more details and precisions. JK's postingYi Uk-ki was another great admiral next to Yi Soon-shin, But he's not as famous as Yi Soon-shin because it was Yi Soon-shin who led the all battles while Yi Uk-ki was more like supportive figure. (bad for him that Yi Soon-shin was too genius) Yi Uk-ki passed the military service entrance exam for 1st degree rank at age of only 17(or 18), and was only about 30 year old or so at the time war began. He died during the battle before war ended. Oh, Yi Uk-ki too, was serving at Northern frontier when Yi Soon-shin was being penalized for Nok-dun island incident. In real history, it was Yi Uk-ki (not Won Kyun) who defended Yi Soon-shin. Yi Ok-ki, Commander of Right Cholla Navy between 1591-1597, was born in Seoul and he was a member of royal clan as a descendant of King Jeongjong (2nd king of Chosun). His direct ancestors had had military profession from generation to generation. He also made his career as a military elite. In 1577, Yi Ok-Ki passed the military examination at the top of candidates at age of 17. (YSS passed his exam in 1576 at the age of 32. It's Yi Ok-ki who was not normal.) In 1581, when he was 21 years old, he was appointed Constable of Kyung-Heung in the North. And, in 1583, he gained victory over the Jurchen. In 1586, he became Constable of Onsung in the North and, in 1587, he defended YSS who was jailed after the Nok Dune Island Battle. He stayed at the North until the end of 1587. (At that time, Won Kyun was Constable of Jongsung in the North as he was in the drama. But Won Kyun had no personal relation with YSS.) In 1591, he was appointed Constable of Suncheon in Cholla Province (so he was the predecessor of Kwon Jun), then Commander of Right Cholla Navy. His fleet joined YSS's from the Battle of Danghangpo in early June 1592 and contributed much to Admiral YSS's victories. During the Imjin War, only YSS and Young Admiral Yi retained their posts until 1597 while other navy commanders were continously replaced. When YSS was jailed in 1597, Yi Ok-Ki joined the campaign to save him along with Yi Hang-Bok (son-in-law of Gen. Kwon Yul) and Kim Myung-Won. We could say that he was # 2 of Chosun Navy after YSS. But he doesn't receive a big portion in IYSS drama. He will return only in Episode 66. lol And you will see what the hell will happen to him.

YSS tells about Admiral Yi Ok-Ki in his Diary.- The name of Admiral Yi Ok-Ki is mentioned many times in YSS's Diary. I selected a few of them from the English translation of Nanjung Ilgi. Sometimes I added my notes to explain the situation. 12 March 1593"... After breakfast played paduk (Go) with Admiral Yi Ok-Ki at his lower chamber. ..." 17 March 1593"Wild wind blew all day. I challenged the Right Commander Yi Ok-Ki, to an archery match, but he would not compete. What fun ! ..." 18 March 1593"... Had a game of paduk with Admiral Yi Ok-Ki, and beat him. ..." 17 June 1593"Rain on and off. Early in the morning Admirals Won Kyun, Yi Ok-Ki and Chong Kol[=Chung Kuhl] came to a strategy conference in my camp, and I confirmed that the retreat of our ground forces from Haman to Chinju was true. After breakfast, I went to the boat of Kyong-su* [ohter name of Admiral Yi Ok-Ki] and talked the whole day with him on board of the reserve boat. Cho Pung, coming from Changwon, reported on the enemy power ; he said it was formidable. - This passage was written before the 2nd Battle of Chinju. Between 22th-29th June 1593, Chinju Castle was attacked by 100,000 Japanese troops. On the 21th June 1593, YSS installed an advanced military post on Hansan Island and confronted 800 Japanese warships at Kyonnaeryang during the battle at Chinju. Since then, Hansan Island became the advanced post of Chosun Navy.
* "Kyong-su"is Yi Ok-Ki's ja. YSS called him as "Kyong-su" several times in his Diary. It signifies that they tied up friendship despite of their age gap. (YSS was 16 years older than Yi Ok-Ki.) Ja is a secondary name often called between friends. In ancient Chosun land, to call someone's name without honorific title was considered as impolite. Even between friends, they didn't call their real names. They called each other their ja or ho (pen name) or their official titles. It's interesting to note that YSS never called the ja of Won Kyun in his Diary. When he got angry with Commander Won, YSS called him just as "Won Kyun" without title. 10 September 1594"Clear and Calm. Sado [Kim Wan] held an archery contest under his auspices. The Right Navy Commander [Yi Ok-Ki] was also present. ..." ***************************************************************** - In the end of February 1596, YSS came into conflict with Yi Ok-Ki. At that time, the royal court ordered the Right Commander to pull out his troops from Hansan Island and to guard Right Cholla province instead. YSS opposed to this order while Yi Ok-Ki was inclined to follow it. Discontent and angry, YSS punished the Right Commander's officer (instead of Yi Ok-Ki himself). But he regretted it soon and apologized to the Young Admiral. (This happening is not mentioned in the drama.) And YSS wrote....3 March 1595"... Early in the morning sent Song Hui-Rip to the camp of the Right Navy Commander to convey my message of apology. Song returned and said that the Commander responded with polite words. ..." 5 March 1596"Clear, then cloudy. At four o'clock, before daybreak, weighed anchor and arrived at Kyonnaeryang in the early morning, where the Right Navy Commander [Yi Ok-Ki] lay in blockade. After breakfast here I met with the Commander and expressed my regret again over the latest trouble. Then the Commander apologized to me for his mistakes. We two sat at a wine table and toasted each other. We went home very drunk. ... I descended to my boat first, but the Right Navy Commander just lay unconscious, so without saying good night to him I returned to my boat..." 30 June 1596"... Late in the day visited the Right Navy Commander and spent the rest of the day with extreme pleasure, then returned." 6 May 1597"The Commander of the (Cholla) Naval Station (Yi Ok-Ki) has sent me his letter of condolence [about the death of YSS's mother]." * Yi Ok-Ki died on the 16th July 1597 at the age of 36.

* Bae Seol (? - 1599)- The man of "twelve ships". He is also know as the "seasick Admiral". (But, in the drama, he didn't show his famous sea-sickness. ) He was High Magistrate{*my translation of gunsu*} of Hap-cheon in early phase of the Imjin War and participated the 1st and 2nd Battles of Sungju. High Constable of Chinju in the late 1594 and Commander of the Right Kyungsang Navy between February-June 1595 and in early 1597. In the Battle of Chilchonryang, he retreated with twelve ships. Deserted from the navy camp before the Battle of Myungryang (September 1597). Arrested by Kwon Yul and executed in 1599.

More infos about Kim Wan (mentioned in page 1 of this thread)
- Kim Wan, Garrison Commander of Sado, was discharged from his post on the 6th February 1596. (mentioned in YSS's Diary but not mentioned in the drama)
- He is referred as YSS's Assistant Defense Commandant (jobangjang) in his Diary on the 23th March 1596. (so after Ep. 87 of the IYSS drama, Kim Wan is called as jobangjang, not as chumsa of Sado.)
- YSS tells also about Kim Wan in his Diary...
During his inspecting tour in February 1592, YSS wrote about Kim Wan, Garrison Commander of Sado :
"As I found many defects in the war-preparedness for defense, I punished the local naval officers and the working staff, and arrested the Commandant [Kim Wan] after discharging the drill-master. Here the defense condition was the worst of all the five naval ports, but since the Traveling Higher Commissioner [Yi Kwang, Governor of Cholla province] had already dispatched his report with recommendations for rewards, I was unable to probe deeper into their crimes. I was only struck dumb with amazement. ..." (25 February 1592 - translated in early part of the English edition of YSS's Memorials to Court).
--> This episode is dramatized in Ep. 42 of IYSS.
(In his Diary, YSS often mentioned the titles of personages instead of their real names. I add the names.)

By the way, Florel, do you have any biographical information about Shin Ho? I was wondering how accurate episode 86 (or was it 87) was with his departure. What happened to him after that? Was he imprisoned, executed, or reassigned?

Shin Ho (1539-1597) Shin Ho passed the Military Examination in 1567. He was Captain of Chosan Fort, perhaps in the years of 80's. ( - mentioned by YSS in Ep. 42) He became High Magistrate ( gunsu) of Nak-an in 1590 or 1591. In the Diary dated on 16th February 1594, Admiral YSS told that Shin Ho was unjustly accused as a corrupt official by a royal emissary who wanted to discharge him. (The same emissary condemned Kwon Jun as the worst of corrupt officials. lol YSS deplored these unjust condemnations.) Shin Ho was certainly discharged between February 1594 and October 1594, because YSS called him as "the former Magistrate of Nak-an Shin Ho" on 25th October 1594. (Cf. Uh Young-Dam died in April 1594. - Ep. 86. I don't know the exact date of Shin Ho's dischargement.) Shin Ho returned to the Chosun navy camp and served Admiral YSS again as Assistant Defense Commandant ( jobangjang) from 16th February 1595 to 21th April 1596. (This period is skipped over in the drama. Ep. 87 starts in August 1596). He resigned his navy post and returned home because of his illness. When the Japanese invaded Chosun again in 1597, he was appointed Defense Commandant of Kyoryong Mountain Castle and joined Yi Bok-Nam, Commander of Cholla Army, in Namwon Castle. He died in the Battle of Namwon (13th-16th August 1597).

Uh Young-Dam died in April 1594. - Ep. 86. I don't know the exact date of Shin Ho's discharge.) I found the date of Shin Ho's dismissal in 1594. I cannot believe that I skipped over this passage in the Admiral's Diary. lol Shin Ho is dismissed on the 2nd February 1594.According to the Admiral's Diary : "... The Sado Commandant [Kim Wan] came and said that the Magistrate of Nagan (=Nak-an) [Shin Ho] was dismissed. ..." (2nd February 1594) And about this dismissal YSS commented two weeks later, "The Magistrates of Hungyang [Bae Heung-Rip] and Sunchon [Kwon Jun] came in the morning. Hungyang had a draft of a secret memorial of the Royal Secret Emissary [Yu Mong-In] addressed to the throne and showed it to me. The Emissary wished to dismiss the Magistrates of Imsil, Mujang and Nagan [Shin Ho] and he condemned the Magistrate (=Constable) of Sunchon as the worst of corrupt officials. On the other hand, he recommended that the court decorate the Magistrates of Tamyang, Chinwon, Naju, Changsong and Changpyong covering up their unpardonable evil act. In this way, the Royal Emissary deceived his royal master to punish valiant subjects and reward crooked cowards. ..." (16th February 1594) Therefore, 2nd February 1594 : Shin Ho is dismissed. - referred in Ep. 86. (And he didn't intercept the royal tributes as he did in the drama.) 6th-9th April 1594 : the Special Navy Examination on Hansan Island - Ep. 84 9th April 1594 : Death of Magistrate Uh Young-Dam - Ep. 86 The epidemics had already spread on Hansan Island at the moment of the 2nd Sea Battle of Danghangpo (4th-5th March 1594 - Ep. 81). The dramatists regrouped some main historical themes (Conflicts with the Mings, Military Exam, Epidemic, etc.) in each week, then they rearranged the historical chronology and added some fictions.

Thanks, Daemado, for your contribution. I wish this thread will become a collective work. ;D I searched accurate dates related to the biography of Yi Sun-Shin the homonym (1554-1611, with pen name Ippu). He became Garrison Commander of Bangdap (the Left Cholla Navy) on the 10th January 1592. He was appointed Commander of the Chungchong Navy on the 15th April 1594 (after the death of Magistrate Uh Young-Dam). So he was the first YSS's staff officer who was promoted to a navy commander. In the drama, it was Kwon Jun. But, on the 16th March 1595, Ippu Yi Sun-Shin was dismissed and interrogated under arrest by the Royal Supply Emissary. Probably it would be a political charge. In the same year, he was demoted to Garrison Commander in Koryongchin (Left Kyungsang Army). In 1596, he resigned his post in Koryong by reason of illness. In 1597, when the second invasion started, he was appointed Capital Defense Commanding General. - Ep. 93-94In November 1597, he was appointed Commander of the Right Kyungsang Navy and arrived in YSS's camp on the 1st December 1597 - Ep. 97. Yi Sun-Shin (1554-1611)

Ki Hyo-Geun (1542-1597) Ki Hyo-Geun passed Military Examination in 1579 and became a royal messenger. In 1590, appointed Magistrate ( hyunryong) of Namhae under the jurisdiction of the Right Kyungsang Navy and retained this post until early 1597. When the second invasion started in 1597, he resigned from his post and left the navy camp on Hansan Island to return home. But he encountered the Japanese on his way back home and threw himself into the sea with his old mother. In 1604, he was decorated as Third Rank Meritorious Subject in the King's Court. Magistrate Ki was the sub-commander whom YSS disliked. He fell in a bad estimation in the Admiral's Diary. "... At nightfall, Cho Pung came and reported that a boat from Namhae with Ki Hyo-Kun [=Ki Hyo-Geun] on board, hiding a young woman in his cabin, had pulled alongside my boat. Ridiculous ! At this critical moment facing the nation, he takes pretty girls in his boat, betraying his loose morals. How can it be justified ? But nevermind, his chief, Admiral Won Kyun is such a man ! ..." (30th May 1593) "... After dark Yi Young-Nam came and said that the Military Commander Son Ko-I [=Seon Geo-Yi, YSS's friend who died in the 1st Battle of Ulsan in 1597] had established a fine record in war at Konyang [=Gon-yang] and that Namhae [Ki Hyo-Geun] was reprimanded by the Supreme Military Commander for his discourteous behavior. How ridiculous ! Hyo-Kun's rudeness has long been known !" (2nd September 1593) "At dawn a royal order came to arrest Pae Sol [=Bae Seol], the Kyongsang Navy Commander and to put Kwon Chun [=Kwon Jun] in his place, sustaining incumbent Ki Hyo-Kun as Magistrate of Namhae. What surprising news ! ..." (13th June 1595)

* Modification : addenda and corrigenda concerning Commanders of the Chungchong Navy (page 1 of this thread). ************************************ Choe Ho (? -1597) Choe Ho passed a special military examination at the top of candidates in 1576. (Cf. Yi Ok-Ki passed the examination at the top rank in 1577 and YSS passed a regular military examination in 1576.) When he was Commander of the South Ham-kyung Army in 1594, he permitted to trade with the Jurchens and opened an international market on the frontiers. From then on, Chosun had a peaceful relations with the Jurchens during more than ten years. Appointed Commander of Chungchong Navy in 1596 and put down the rebellion of Yi Mong-Hak. He was killed in the Sea Battle of Chilchonryang on the 16th July 1597. In IYSS drama, he is an extra ! (So we cannot see him in the Chilchonryang episode.) Wu Chi-Jeok (? - 1628) Captain of Youngdeungpo in 1592. He was the most brave captain in the Right Kyungsang Navy along with Yi Woon-Ryong and Yi Young-Nam. [/li][li] He became Constable of Suncheon in 1596 and participated in the disastrous battle of Chilchonryang in July 1597. He participated in the Sea Battle of Myungryang in September 1597 and in YSS's battles in 1598, notably in the Sea Battle of Noryang. After the Imjin War, Wu Chi-Jeok was appointed Commander of Chungchong Navy in 1601 and Supreme Navy Commander of three provinces in 1611. Appointed Royal Border Defense Commissioner ( sunbyunsa) in 1613, Commander of Pyung-an Army in 1619, Commander of the Left Kyungsang Army in 1625 and Commander of the North Ham-kyung Army in 1628. He died in 1628 in Ham-kyung province. Related thread : All the rankings in the Navy...?

Won Kyun (1540-1597) - perhaps the most hated historical personage by most of Koreans since Chosun period. He has been a model of stupid, coward, corrupt, incompetent and lustful commander. But, recently, there have been tentatives to rehabilitate him by some historians and novelists (notably in "The Immortal Yi Soon-Shin of Kim Tak-Hwan). Hot debates are ongoing in South Korea regarding to this upsetting historical figure. Won Kyun was born on the 5th January 1540 at Do-il-dong in Pyung-taek (Kyung-ki province). His father Won Jun-Ryang was a famous corrupt army commander. Won Kyun has been regarded with suspicion to have cheated at the military exam, because the Royal Annals wrote that his father was criticized because he was a proctor when his son (probably Won Kyun) passed the exam. Before the Imjin War, he was Captain of Chosan Fort, Constable of Buryong, and then Constable of Jongsung. When Yi Il attacked the Jurchen's village of Shijeon in January 1588 ( - Ep. 35), Won Kyun was in charge of a rear guard. The first explicit mention of his name in the Royal Annals is on the issue of his dismissal from the post of Left Cholla Navy Commander on the 4th February 1591 ( -Ep. 40). The reason of his dismissal was bad administrations when he was constable in the North. But he returned to the navy in January 1592 as Commander of the Right Kyungsang Navy ( - Ep. 50). When the Japanese invaded Chosun in April 1592, he sank about 70-90 warships and took flight. He asked YSS to rescue him and followed YSS's naval battles only with 3-7 warships. He was on bad terms with Admiral YSS. To him, Admiral Won certainly caused more problems than the Japanese. When their discord became excessively serious, the royal court decided to send Won Kyun to the post of the Chungchong Army Commander in February 1595. And then he became Commander of the Cholla Army in July 1596 and returned again to the navy as Supreme Navy Commander of three provinces in February 1597 ( - Ep. 88). The Chosun Navy under his command was annihilated in the Battle of Chilchonryang in July 1597 ( - Ep. 92). He is supposed to be killed by the Japanese at Chunwonpo, but his death remains as a mystery. In fact, in a memorial to the Court of Marshal Kwon Yul, written on the 21th July 1597 (five days after the battle), the Marshal said that his staff officer Choe Young-Gil met Won Kyun who escaped from the butchery and was going to Jinju (!). In 1604, Won Kyun was decorated as First Rank Meritorious Military Subject by King Sunjo. The royal decree according the title of First Rank Meritorious Subject to Won Kyun (Treasure # 1113) Related threads about Won Kyun : True Won Kyun of historyWon Kyun Won Gyun finally dies

Florel, I read almost every Kim Tak Hwan's novel including "Immortality", and the notorious accusation for the author as "the defender of Won Kyun" is not accurate, I think.
Novel "Immortality" written by Kim Tak Hwan is neither intended to admire Won Kyun nor to undermine Yi Sun-shin. It is just talking about "people" who was living in the horrible 7-year war and the two men are just parts of them. Actually, I felt that Won Kyun in his novel is a stupid macho while Yi Sun-shin is a smart manipulator, but some critics say that Won Kyun was described as a brave manly warrior while Yi Sun-shin is a introspective scholar (that is "girly") character. Interesting difference in opinion. Hmmm...
Although I don't like the novel so much, it always made me sad that people who was bashing the novel are too biased politically or ideologically. I mean, they are not criticizing the novel in a good manner. Even some of them did not read his novel and criticize him based on someone else's ciriticism.
