I'm wondering about one of YSS's officer, Kim Wahn. He seems to be the comical relief of the show. Did he really exist? If so, how do the writers of the show decide what type of personal characteristics the historical figures are portrayed as? Are they just making them up, guessing, or do they use some factual historical informations that they use for their character portrayals? Oh man....I thought I just answered your question. Anyway, read my post. lol All of the men I described were real.

Or are there simply exaggerating that to have someone be comic relief? Another issue would be Won Kyun....we know that historically, Won Kyun was NOT a childhood friend of YSS, but did Won Kyun start off as a good warrior? We know that his career plummeted, especially as he started drinking. Episode 50 (or was that 51) shows that Won Kyun had some good wisdom as a military leader...was that true at one point?

Okay, I see what you mean. Interesting question. But before I answer I might have to reveal some spoilers so maybe this thread is not a good place to post. How about history vs. fiction thread? I'll tell you right away though that I don't know of any descriptions made about Kim Wahn. But there are several unflattering entries that YSS wrote about Won Kyun in his diary. It seems that Won Kyun was more of a coward than anything else. Maybe that's why there's a lot of criticism coming from Korean fans because Won Kyun was made to look better than he was, hence calling the drama, "Immortal Won Kyun" in jest.

By the way, I just started watching this series since around the 25th episode. Did the beginning episodes start off with the end of Admiril Yi's life, and then they flash back or something? Choko posted Ep 4? I don't get it. Yes. The first four episodes led to YSS's death in battle (you have to see this..so much great drama, action etc.) and then the drama flashbacked to YSS's childhood in episode 5.

Yi Young Nam was definetely one of my favorite characters (and not only cause he is so handsome). He had a temper on him, but he always wanted to do what was right.

;DWell I finally seen Yi-youngman! I was a little taken aback when as soon as Won kyun met him he hit him in the stomach, but after watching the part when they had the contest and Kyun cheated to win then explained why,I think I understand. :(Kyuns power has really went to his head. Well we have seen the sinking of the first turtle ship now and I guess the next episode will be the aftermath, I kind of hope that maybe the whole thing was Lt.Na's dream brought on by stress and worry.I like the guy everyone calls monkey man and his part with the mapmaker. Well its episode 54 tomorrow night.I think as involved as I am in the show that I should graduate in my addict status :Dthanks

I agree Norma. Although, I don't necessarily feel that the power went to his head as much as it allowed him to give full reign to his emotions and desires. He clearly demonstrated (earlier in the series) that he was committed to one thing and that was violence. It's unfortunate to watch really.

In my last article I forget to mention Kim Wahn's responsibilty and I had just called him "monkey man" I believe at least according to the show, he was a reconnaissance officer. That is, he had to survey the seas for approaching Japanese activity, hence we see that scene with the hawk. He probably used the hawk to convey messages back and forth to headquarters.

:'(Episode 54 was awesome.I loved how YSS handled Lt. Na and I loved how all the commanders, called him crazy and insane but they all backed him up!I really like Lt. Wan and the other YSS and I know they can't really abolish the navy. I think maybe they will start building the ship in secret :-XI wouldn't trust the other shipbuilder,he looks sneaky to me.Well I guess I will have to wait till tonite to find out more ;Dthanks for listening

They wear the blue coats. Of course, among these blue coats there are different ranks, some are higher than others but for the purposes of this show you dont have to know. Just that Lt. Na, the shipbuider is a junior grade officer (He and other lower ranked officers wear the green uniforms). He was originally under the other YSS but got transferred to building and designing the goebuksun (turtle ship).

:)Thanks for that info. Now I know what the color of the different uniforms means. I always wondered but for the sake of not knowing any better I called them all commanders. thanks again

For example, when Won Kyun and YSS combined forces, YSS had overall command.

Well, technically Won Kyon and Yi had similar titles. Head of naval forces for the left and right sections of their provinces, but Won started w/a larger fleet, like 60 ships vs. 24 for Yi. Won in the begining was actually superior in importance if not rank. Yi was only given command over Won after his victory at Hansando, when the king gave him command over the three regional navies. Before Hansando, Won and the other commander, Yi Ok Ki, followed Yi Soon Shin volintarily.
