Episode 41 : YSS becomes a naval Commander !
It's a historical fact that YSS was parachuted to the post of Commander of Left Cholla Naval Station (LCNS) at the recommandation of Yu Sung-Ryong on the 13th February 1591. It was exactly before 14 months of the outbreak of Imjin War (the 13th April 1592).
Related dates
The 4th February 1591 : Won Kyun was discharged from the post of Commander of LCNS (situated at actual Yosu, South Cholla province).
The 13th February 1591 : YSS was appointed Commander of LCNS.
The 28th February 1591 : YSS arrived at Yosu.

BUREAUCRATIC AND MILITARY RANKS OF CHOSUN
Chosun dynasty is marked by its highly developed system of bureaucracy. It was a country of literati and confucian scholars. A spectacular contrast to Japan, a country of swordmen and warriors.
YSS's fast-track in 1591 was an exceptional case in the history of Chosun. Even the Easterners raised protests and oppositions against his appointment. YSS was promoted suddenly from the 6th Low degree (Magistrate) to the 3rd High degree (Naval Commander).
I made a simplified list about bureaucratic and military ranks of Chosun government. {terms such as "1st High degree" are my own translations} There were 18 ranks of literati bureaucrats and military officials. But the 2nd Low degree is the highest rank to which military officials could mount. I just noted a few of important titles mentioned in the drama.
1st High degree : the Prime Minister, the Left Deputy Prime Minister, the Right Deputy Prime Minister
1st Low degree
2nd High degree : Ministers (ex: the Minister of Military Dep.)
2nd Low degree : Regional Military Commander Supreme Naval Commander of the Three Provinces (a naval chief commander post created for YSS)
3rd High degree : Commanders of Naval Stations Commanders of important fortifications (ex: Chinju, Jeju)
3rd Low degree : Constable
4th High degree 4th Low degree : Captain
5th High degree 5th Low degree
6th High degree 6th Low degree : Magistrate
7th High degree 7th Low degree
8th High degree 8th Low degree
9th High degree 9th Low degree : Lieutenant (military officials with green uniform)

I'm inventing lots of nickname stuffs, luvarchfiendyssnalbal. (luv, do you prefer luvarchfiendyssnalbalyoungnam ? ;D ) oh florel, you are beginning to know me too well. i think perhaps luvarchfiendnalbalyssyoungnam or luvarchfiendchoibunalbalyssyoungnam. ;D you weren't here for the AOW names....choi bu was the archfiend's right hand man....and my true luv...i sometimes use the actor's real name luvjangdongjik or just luvchoibu. ;D and then we have bo's own invention: luvdessert perhaps i should just simplify and go with luvwarriors ;D ************************************** thanks for the update on the fact vs fiction. i suspected the jump in ranks, but not so many. when i started reading one of the diaries and i cannot remember which, there is a listing of the ranks. i have to say it is very confusing, but you have indeed made it more understandable. thanks so much. luvwarriors

Do you remember the young general who died to protect YSS in episode 4? Yi Young-nam in episode 57.

nice pic choko. he has just been seen in the first 4 eps so far (the one with the thick eyebrows, very passionate, not always seeing eye to eye with the commands of YSS). when he died YSS took off his armour and placed it on young nam, thus making himself vulnerable. darn, it makes me tear up just thinking about it.

I can't say I remember him particularly, because my early tapings were a little unreliable, but I look forward to meeting him again in ep 57.

bo, if you are so inclined....you could watch the VODs of eps 1-4 and use VIB's summaries to help follow along. those eps were too spectacular not to have gotten a good look at them.

No, I don't mean I didn't see them--I mean--well, okay, I confess. I saw them. I just don't remember all the particulars, because it was soooooooo much info. Now I feel silly for blaming my tape machine. Bo

if you can't blame objects such as VCRs and computers, etc for 'misplaced' info and other life foibles, well then what is one to do? ;D

I continue again this thread. I was not inspirited for a while.
My gratutide to Skinz for his contribution on this thread.
Episode 31
One more fact about "The Japanese intrusion of Junghae year (February, 1587)" that I have mentioned (page 1 of this thread).
- Hideyoshi has nothing to do with this incident. At that time, he was busy with his Kyushu Campaign.
- Wakizaka did'nt come to Korea for kidnapping Mijin's daughter, of course. His first (unfriendly) visit to Korea dated in 1592.
