The rising sun heralded a new day. Yi watched as it slowly made its way from behind a fiery row of clouds, all the while the sounds of battle raging around him. "Such a radiant sun...Brilliant," was all he could think.
Looking down, he saw the discarded drumstick of the war drum. Picking it up, he began to strike the war drum, shouting, "Fight! Do not spare the enemy - not even one!" As he struck, he thought back to all those he had lost during the course of the war and with each face that appeared before him, he struck with more force. So lost was he in his memories that he did not see the Japanese soldier on the adjacent ship take careful aim with his rifle until it was too late.
He watched, frozen, as the bullet left the gun's barrel. At first, the admiral did not even realize that he had been shot. He heard a loud snap and after a few seconds of stunned silence, he looked down to see blood seeping out of the wound in his chest. His fingers released his grip on the baton and he slid against the war drum, collapsing on the deck.
Song Hui Rup who was shouting orders on the other end of the ship, turned at the sound and saw his admiral holding his chest, blood trickling between his fingers. Though he had always managed to save his commander in previous moments of peril, Nahl Bahl could now only watch as the admiral leaned against the war drum, his life bleeding away.
Though dying, Yi's face was strangely serene, like a man who had received relief after many years of long suffering. Looking up at the sky, he saw the more carefree moments in his life - standing over a waterfall with his friends, Yu song ryong and Won Kyoon, riding across a sandy beach along side Won Kyoon. He closed his eyes and his thoughts continued to drift further into his past.

Dear VIB, thank you for your Admiral Yi translations. In talking with KBC a few days ago, they indicated they will be showing Adm. Y right after Phoenix concludes. Regarding subtitles, they said they are working on it--I don't know if money is the sticking point, or the availability of good Korean/English speakers. Perhaps you could call and negotiate something with them.

"Open your eyes! Open your eyes!Soon Shin-ah! I said open your eyes! Soon Shin ah! Wake up! Get it together!" a young boy's voice cried. Dressed in the colorful clothing of a yangban child, he was bent over the unconscious body of another little boy. Several other boys, also dressed in bright clothing kneeled nearby, their hands in the air. On the ground near them were several dropped melons. They were being watched by a peasant man holding a large stick. "How could you hit him in the head that hard? He is a person! Aren't you going to do something?" he shouted to the farmer accusingly.
The farmer tapped the end of the stick in one hand with satisfaction. "This time he's not going to fool me," he replied.
The young boy turned back to his fallen companion. "Soon Shin-ah! Breathe! Breathe, I said!"
"Hey, I said I wasn't going to fall for it again!" the farmer said obstinately.
As he continued to shout to his friend the farmer began to look worried. "Oh he's dead for sure...over a stupid melon...Soon Shin-ah! Breathe!"
When the boy still did not respond to his friend's repeated entreaties, the farmer dropped to his knees and listened to the boy's chest. He shook the boy and then muttered, "Aigo - oh no! This one -" Jumping to his feet he ran to get some water.
"Mister!" the unconscious boy's friend shouted after him, but the man kept running.
The boy's stopped their punishment and stood up. One asked, "What will we do about Soon Shin?"
"Yeah, all of us will end up like Soon Shin," another broke in. "General..."
The leader of the group of boys sat down on the ground with a thump and put his head in his hands.
Behind them, the little boy on the ground opened his eyes and sat up. Squinting he looked around and saw his comrades with their backs to him. "Won Kyoon Hyung Nim (older brother won kyoon)..." he called.
"Hey!!!" The other boy flew to his feet and ran to his friend's side. "What happened to you? Are you okay?"
His friend rubbed the back of his head. "It hurt a little bit but we're not in trouble right?" Soon Shin gave a small grin.
Won Kyoon dropped his head and gave a sigh of relief. Behind him, one of the boys said, "Why you little...we thought you were dead!" Kyoon simply put a hand on his friend's shoulder and they smiled at each other.
"Hey! Over there!"
The boys turned to see the farmer running anxiously towards them, a half gourd full of water in his hands. "RUN!!!" Kyoon shouted. The boys grabbed their plunder and took off.
Stoppping in his tracks, the farmer pointed at the rabble and said, "Hey, those little...HEY YOU LITTLE BASTARDS!!!" Dropping his water, he began shouting threats after them as he ran to catch up.
A safe distance away, the boys stopped to catch their breath.
"Are you a snail? Why are you so slow?! We shouldn't have brought him," one boy said as Soon Shin finally caught up with them.
"Dae Jang (general), let's divide it up," another said eagerly.
Kyoon nodded, gathered up the melons and doled them out to his friends. When he got to Soon Shin, the boys objected. "Dae Jang! Why are you giving one to him? He didn't do anything!"
"Yeah," the fat one piped up. "He didn't do anything."
Soon Shin hung his head and said softly, "I don't need it."
Kyoon stood in front of him and said, "Take it. In any case we went together."
"Dae Jang!" one boy protested.
"We went in on this together," Kyoon explained, "so we share things equally." Turning back to Soon Shin, he gave him a melon and told his friend, "But since you made things dangerous for us, you only get one, okay? No objections, right?"
"Mm," Soon Shin nodded with a small smile.
The group of would-be soldiers ran through the village to the training camp where the real Chosun soldiers were practicing their martial arts. Peering over the walls surrounding the training ground, won kyoon and another boy marveled at their skills. Watching the soldiers somersault with their swords, Kyoon pointed and said, "That's it! That's the move - it's my forte!"
"Yeah!" the other nodded. "It's just like the way you do it!"
"Kyoon Hyung Nim!" a small voice said plaintively.
Kyoon looked down. He had been standing on Soon Shin's back to see over the wall. "What?"
"Kyoon Hyung Nim, When? When will I get to see?" Soon Shin asked.
"After I watch just a little bit longer," he promised.
"My back is starting to hurt," Soon Shin said.
"Just wait a little more," Kyoon said brightly. "They're just starting."
"You're so impatient," the other boy said with disdain. "That's why you have such a long way to go."
A new voice broke in, "What do you think you are doing?"
Looking up from his hands and knees, Soon Shin's face lit up. "Song Ryong Hyung Nim!" He started to get up, but forgot about Kyoon, who fell off his back to the ground.
"Dae Jang!" one of the boys called with concern, as they helped him to his feet. "Are you alright, sir?"
"Kyoon hyung nim are you alright?" Soon Shin asked.
"What the heck are you doing?" Song Ryong demanded.
"What're you doing here, Nerd-o?" Kyoon asked him
"You're stepping on the little kids?" he asked
"OF course," Kyoon replied. "Unless you want to step in..."
Song Ryong tightened his lips and said, "And how did you trick him into doing what you wanted this time?"
"No, it's not like that, Hyung Nim," Soon Shin explained. "The next time was my turn, right Kyoon hyung nim?"
"You don't have to defend him. Let's go, it's about the time Teacher comes back," he told him dragging him away.
"Yu Song Ryong " one of the boys noted ____________________________________________________________________
Song Ryong was leading his classmates in study when Kyoon and his companions ran into the yard playing war games. Getting indignantly onto his feet, he shouted, "What kind of behavior is this? Can't you stop it?"
"Are you playing Teacher again? Then the teacher is not here today?" Kyoon asked casually.
"If you know that, then hurry up and get in here."
Kyoon said nothing. Shooting Song Ryong a cool smile, he pulled a toy arrow from the quiver on his back and fitted it to his bow. Drawing the arrow back, he pointed it at Song Ryong who started back a step, but he then turned his aim to the bird's nest directly above Song Ryong's head.
"Bull's eye!" one boy shouted as the other laughed. Song Ryong winced and rubbed his head.
Kyoon got up before his soldiers and said, "Hey, listen up! We are in a shortage of soldiers. in order to fight the 30,000 enemy in the nexy village, we're going to recuit more soldiers." "Are you going to do more fighting?" Song Ryong shouted indignantly. "That's enough now. Let it go!"
"If we lost this battle, we lose the training facility," Kyoon told him. Turning to the children he said, "I am sure many of you will enlist."
"These guys are still kids!" Song Ryong broke in.
"The only kid here is you," Kyoon shot back.
"What?!"
"Are you guys going to be men, or live sheltered pampered lives as goody goody scholars? Think about it." Kyoon took his seat while Song Ryong sighed in exasperation

Standing in only their underwear over a small picturesque waterfall, the boys took turns jumping into the lagoon below. Off to one side, Soon Shin clutched his clothing to him tightly as he watched the boys plunge in one by one, cheered on by the ones who had already jumped. When it came to his turn, Soon Shin looked apprehensively over the edge of the rocks, still holding his clothes in his arms. Kyoon looked at him expectantly but Soon Shin was reluctant to meet his eyes.
"HEY YI SOON SHIN WHAT'RE YOU WAITING FOR?" one of the boys shouted through cupped hands from below.
"This isn't possible," Soon Shin said in a small voice. "I can't do it."
"DAE JANG, JUST LET HIM GO!!" they shouted, getting cold.
Kyoon grabbed his friend firmly by the arm.
"Hyung Nim," Soon Shin protested. Kyoon nodded for him to jump. "no, i can't, I can't do it, I can't do it Hyung Nim," he kept repeating.
"You can do it," Kyoon disagreed. "No? You have to do it."
"Let it go!" a familiar voice chided. Both turned and saw Song Ryong walking with an annoyed air towards them. Grabbing Soon Shin by the arm, he faced Kyoon and gave him a glare. "Quit trying to make him do something he doesn't want to do."
Kyoon smiled. "What you say isn't wrong, but not wanting to do something and not being able to do something are two different things. Isn't that right, Yi Soon Shin?"
Putting an arm around Soon Shin's shoulder, Song Ryong told Kyoon, "Let him go."
"There's no one here to see," kyoon answered dismissively. Turning to soon shin he told him, "Go ahead, leave. No one is stopping you."
From down below the boys continued their heckling. "We're freezing our butts off!" shouted one.
"Yeah, if you're not going to do it then just run away!" the chubby one yelled. The other boys joined in on their jeering. Ashamed at his fear, Soon Shin lowered his head and walked away. Song Ryong gave Kyoon another disapproving look and followed Soon Shin.
"Soon Shin-ah!" Song Ryong called after his friend. "Hey! Stop a minute!" Walking in front of him he continued, "That's why I told you so many times not to hang out with them. Don't let it bother you."
"But he is right," Soon Shin admitted. "Not wanting to do something and not being able to do something are two different things."
"Soon Shin-ah-"
"He's right," Soon shin sad sadly. "I am a coward." He continued to walk with his head lowered. ______________________________________________________________________
At a local geisha house, the kisaeng were admiring some expensive fabric.
"Doesn't it look good?"
"Yes it looks wonderful on you!"
Laughing and chattering away, one turned her eye to Soon Shin's mother and said, "I mean, I know you are good, but this is rare silk from China,"
"Don't worry," Soon Shin's mother reassured. "I'll do a good job."
Adjusting her large hairpiece, the geisha said casually, "I was thinking of trying a different seamstress this time...Byoon, I don't really have any complaints with your work, but you're not that fast. Besides...a lowerclass person like me would feel guilty about employing a yangban such as yourself, don't you think?"
Byoon looked stunned. "That...how did you..."
The kisaeng let out a peal of laughter. "You don't become the head kisaeng for nothing. From where i sit I can see a hundred miles."
Soon Shin's mother looked mortified by their comment. Picking up her things, she proudly rose to her feet, saying, "I'll go find another seamstress."
The one who had made the observation grabbed her sleeve. "It was a joke!" she said cajolingly. "A joke! Would I entrust such rare silk to anyone else? Besides, we all know that you are the best in the entire city." As they giggled, Byoon said nothing. ____________________________________________________________________
"Hey you idiot! You think you'll win putting the sticks down that way?" Yi Jung told a fellow gambler.
"For someone who won't bet you talk too much!" the man shot back.
"Listen...you gotta put your sticks down like this...that way you can blow him away in one go. Are you gonna to take all day?"
The other man fanned his fingers under his nose. "You reek of booze!" Jingling the coin purse on his belt, he told him, "If you wanna tell me what to do, then place a bet. Otherwise, go find some other yangban and go hang out with them!"
"Why you..." Jung sputtered. "I'm trying to help and this is how you act?"
"I don't need your help!" the other man shouted.
"What are your waiting for?!" another man shouted. Throwing down the sticks, the men hopped up and down as the winners collected their money. Behind Yi Jung, a man looked at him with a curious eye and then smiled when he realized who he was.

At an outside bar, the two men shared lunch and some drinks. Leaning forward the other man said, "Sir, why don't you stop drinking and we do some writing, eh? I need a proper dowry list if I plan to marry my daughter to a high official, don't I?" He gave an amiable chuckle.
"You want me to write out your daughter's dowry list?" Jung said in a slurred voice.
The other man smiled. "I hard that you know how to write."
At this, Jung looked up from his wine bowl and laughed. "Sir, though I eat and eat well, you have mistaken me for someone else. Me? I don't know how to write. Though I wear the hat and clothes of a yangban, my eyes are dull for letters."
Taken aback, the man gave a nervous laugh and said, "Why are you being this way? I know you can."
"I said I do not!" he shouted waving his arms about. "IF I did, I would never help a thieving yangban who was seeking to buy increased social standing with money."
"What? A thief?! Why you-"
"Cha cha...I've eaten very well," he said jovially, stumbling off.
"Why that-" Sputtering with indignace, the man ordered, "What are you doing? Teach that man a lesson!" His men commenced beating Yi Jung.
"Aigo aigo aigo! Help me! Someone help me!" As they threw him out into the street, Jung picked up his hat. He didn't see that his wife was coming up the road. She ran to his side
"Husband!"
"Those wimps have no muscle," Jung muttered under his breath. "...Are you on your way back from somewhere?"
Back at their home, Byoon was exhausted from a long day of sewing and housework. Untying her apron, she was about to enter the house when she saw that her husband had left his straw sandals in disarray again. Pulling them together, she set them down neatly with a sigh. Hearing the gate open, she asked her son with a smile, "Are you finally back?" Her expression changed when she saw her son's face. "Why are your lips like that? And what happened to your face?
"AAAAAHHHHH!" Soon Shin cried as his mother smacked his calves with a switch.
"Quiet!" his mother said sternly. "Didn't I say to stop crying?" she said, her voice angry. Outside his father was getting some fresh air to relieve his hangover. He was surprised to hear Soon Shin's mother's rasied voice. "What sort of house is our house?" she demanded.
"We are the descended from generations of the Yi's of Duk-Soo."
"What is your name?"
"It is Yi Soon Shin."
"Your father's reason for giving you that name was what?!"
"So that I would be a good subject to a benevolent ruler like emperor Shun."
"Then why do you lack strength? You have memorized your name, but your heart does not know its meaning."
"Mother..."
"In this world, the most important things are courage and spirit. If you are always crying how can I call you a man? Do you think you will be able to grow up to be a great man?" Fed up, she sset down her switch and went outside. She had not expected to see her husband waiting for her. "You've come outside?"
"It's cold out here," her husband remarked. "I feel like I was the one who was whipped."
"Please go inside," Byoon said trying to change the subject. "I will bring your dinner tray inside."
"How long to you intend to keep hounding him with that stupid name? Do you know why I gave him that name? To mock the world."
"Suh bang Nim!"
"The King is wrapped around the queen dowager's skirt and the court is full of greedy officials! What is the point of serving a benevolent ruler when there is none?Mocking this hopeless world was the reason I gave him that name.
"Suh Bang Nim, why do you do this to yourself?" Byoon asked. "Please don't. The world will change."
Turning to his wife, Jung told her, "No, that's a delusion. IT is an impossible dream. Don't scold him. Don't try to rasie him to be strong. It is better to teach him to laugh though other's try to break his spirit. Then, his life will become more comfortable. Sighing, he went back inside. ___________________________________________________________________
Dressed in his homemade commander's outfit, Kyoon was overseeing the training of his "troops". "Don't fool around!" he ordered. "Listen up!" The boys stopped sparring with their sticks. "In this world, the most important thing is courage! We, the Kunchundong Brigade are the most courageous. Got that?"
"Yes!"
Turning to the boy nearest him, Kyoon said, "Gimme that." Taking the stick from him, he thrust it at the fat boy with a loud "YAH!" When he flinched, Kyoon scolded, "Don't close your eyes! Didn't I tell you to see the sword to the end?"
"Dae Jang!" Another boy ran up with a long piece of wood. "The spear is finished!" Kyoon took it and gave his subordinate a dissatisfied look. "hey, at least it's longer than the lower village captain's."
Chucking it back at its maker he scoffed, "Is it a spear or a cane?"
"Hey it's Soon Shin!" The boys turned to see Soon Shin crouching behind a tree.
"Hey coward, what are you doing skulking over there?"
"Yeah! Are you a spy from the other village?" The boys started laughing.
"Ignore him," Kyoon ordered.
"Why? It's fun!" one of the boys protested.
"It's enough that he wasn't accepted into our group. If you tease him further, it's unsportsmanlike.
One of the boys gave a sly smile and ran to Soon Shin who had his head in his hands. "Hey, do you really want to be in our brigade? There might still be a way..." Soon Shin looked up.

Determined to prove himself to Kyoon, Soon Shin stole back to the wall surrounding the Chosun military training camp. "Not all of us jumped off the waterfall," the boy had told him. "If you can prove that you aren't a coward, you might be able to join our group." Jumping up and down a few times, he sighed as he realized that there was no way for him to see over the wall. On a whim, he looked along the base of the wall and found a small opening large enough for him to squeeze through. Wriggling his body through the hole, Soon Shin was awed by what he saw, but quickly snuck back when the soldiers ran by. Distracted with washing themselves, the soldiers had left their spears leaning against the wall unguarded. Soon Shin reached for one and worked it through the wall. Crawling back out, he lifted the spear in wonder but as he did so, one of the soldiers noticed its point moving above the wall. "Hey!" he shouted as he and the others ran after the spear, still only half dressed.
"Here!" Soon Shin said to Kyoon as he handed hiim the spear.
Dressed in his makeshift general's outfit, Kyoon took the weapon from his friend. "Where did you get this?" he asked in amazement
"It suits you!" Soon Shin smiled as Kyoon tried it out.
"Hey you little bastards!" One soldier ran up and thumped Kyoon soundly. "What are you doing stealing government property! You're dead!" he said dragging him to his feet
"What are you doing?! Let me go! I didn't do anything!" Kyoon protested.
"Don't lie! You're coming with us! I've seen you at the training camp."
"I said it wasn't me!"
"Do you guys want to go to jail too?" He made a threatening gesture at the boys.
"Did you say jail?" Soon Shin gulped.
"Yeah. And they'll beat you until your not quite dead!" Jumping at them he yelled, "Alright let's go then all of you!"
At his words, the boys turned tail and fled. Soon Shin, though conflicted, ran with the others. Kyoon turned and shouted, "Hey!" As the soldier dragged him off he kept on shouting, "Hey let go of me!" Soon Shin stopped running and looked back at his friend.
At their school, Song Ryong wondered what had happened that the boys had arrived in such a state. "What? Is it true?"
"That's what I said!" one boy said breathlessly. "They took them to jail!" Alarmed, Song Ryong ran to find his friends.
At the prison, Kyoon was on all fours and Soon Shin was kneeling with his hands in the air. Both were being watched by the soldiers. "You're out of control aren't you? Keep your back straight!" he said in an annoyed tone as he smacked Kyoon.
"Don't hit him sir, he didn't do anything wrong - it was I who stole the spear!" Soon Shin begged
"Shut Up!" The soldier sat down to find Kyoon staring defiantly at him. "What the hell are you looking at, eenom-ah! Did you tell him to keep his mouth shut? I bet you'd ruin the country someday!"
"That's not true" Soon Shin said. "i brought the spear to Dae Jang. It's the truth."
"Dae Jang? Who is the dae jang? him?" the soldier said in an amused tone.
"It's a joke" Kyoon said. "Who the heck could be a dae jang with a soldier like you?" he said to Soon Shin.
"Hyung nim," Soon shin whimpered mournfully.
"Huhuh," the soldier chuckled scornfully. "Now you're selling off your subordinate? This one is a bad kid." _______________________________________________________________________
"This is a place of strict military discipline!" the captain saidto Song Ryong. "It is not a place for children to come and go as they wish!"
"If by your words it is a place of strict military discipline, my friends should not have been able to get in in the first place, is that not so?"
"What?"
"Soldiers should not lose their weapons and they should not cover their negligence by punishing small children. Though it was wrong for them to take the spear, we are fortunate that it was just children and not the wae nom. And since my friends have alerted your soldiers, I think that they deserve praise for their actions."
At his words the captain looked as if he were wavering. Song Ryong's precocious words seemed to be having an effect.
Released from their punishment, both boys followed Song Ryong out. "Hey, nerd-o, who asked you for your help?" Kyoon asked.
"Hey, I had to bail you out of this mess and now you're going to give ME grief?" Song Ryong said, annoyed.
"No, hyung nim," Soon Shin jumped in. "Kyoon hyung nim wasn't the one who did it - I did it."
Song Ryong turned to Kyoon. "How far do you plan on ruining Soon Shin?"
Rubbing his back, Kyoon shot back, "He still has a long way to go before he's properly ruined."
"What?"
"Next time, I'll have him steal a gun!" he said, his voice rising.
"What?! You really-"
"So, from now on, you look after him!" Kyoon said scowling. "Take him and keep a close eye on him! GOt it?"
"What?"
Shooting Soon Shin an angry glance, Kyoon then walked away, deliberately bumping Song Ryong in the process. ___________________________________________________________________
"OWOwowowowowowow...HEY!" As Kyoon bent over a rock, his friends tried to relieve the pain in his lower back. "Be gentle for crying out loud!" he shouted.
"It's all done," the boy said in a placating tone. When he saw Soon Shin approaching, he accused, "Do you know how much dae jang has suffered because of you? And now you have the nerve to come here? Don't you have any shame?"
Kyoon got up and winced as he sat down. Soon Shin approached him, head down, with a handful of weeds. "Put this on...it will help..."
"That's enough, get lost!" one of the boys told him.
"I'm sorry Kyoon hyung nim," Soon Shin said tearfully. "It's because I admire you so much and I wanted to be a commander like you - that's why I follow you around. I didn't know I would make trouble for you like this." Kyoon looked away. "I won't follow you around ever again," Soon Shin promised. Setting the plants down, he turned and walked slowly away.
"Hey!"
Soon Shin turned around at the sound of his voice.
"Do you wish to join our group?"
One of the bigger boys turned to him in disbelief. "Dae Jang! He still has a long way to go!"
"I'm not saying we'll let him in right away," Kyoon explained. Soon Shin just looked at him quietly.

Walking with Soon Shin, Song Ryong expressed his concern for his smaller friend's need to prove himself to Won Kyoon. "Are you really going to go? Do you have any idea how high General's point is?"
"He said I just have to get to that point," Soon Shin explained.
"Why the heck are you doing this? Why do you want to be friends with Won Kyoon so badly?"
"I want to be a commander too," Soon Shin confessed. "Older brother Yu Shin, Hui Shin told me before they left for Asan. Father is not home much and my mother is a woman, so I have to protect her. I have to take care of the family and the house as well."
Song Ryong sighed, pitying his friend. "Soon Shin-ah-"
"A coward can't do those things, "Soon Shin continued earnestly. A coward can't be responsible for anything. So...that's why I want to be a great man."
Knowing that he would be unsuccessful in changing Soon Shin's mind, Song Ryong halted Soon Shin as he was about to walk away. "Wait..." Reaching into his sleeve, he pulled out a small flute and handed it to his friend. "Take it," he told him. "I heard that General's peak is really steep. It is also important for a great man to keep up with his studies."
Soon Shin smiled. "I understand. I promise to work hard on that. I'll be back, hyung nim." Smiling, he ran off.
Soon shin ran after the group of boys as they climbed the trail that led to their destination. Won kyoon appeared to have no trouble negotiating the brambles and rocks, but his peers were getting tired. Smirking, he pushed them on. At a riverside, the boys were fanning themselves, rubbing their feet and grumbling in general.
"What are we going to do?"
"I'm so sore i can't move!"
"me too!"
Kyoon's voice stopped them amidst their whining. "Come on, get up. We've still got a ways to go! I said get up!"
Nne boy nudged his friend and whispered, "Go on, you tell him."
Walking up to Kyoon, the boy suggested, "Dae jang, let's stop and go back down. The kids said they can't go on."
"Are you saying you're going to give up?" The other boy looked behind him. "Fine then, go if you want, but don't complain later."
"Okay we'll go then." He turned and went to join the others
Kyoon turned to Soon Shin. "If it is difficult for you too, then go. i won't stop you or drag you out."
Soon Shin shook his head. "No, we came here to climb didn't we? I'll go with you to the end."
"Do you have confidence in yourself?" Kyoon asked with a smile, patting his shoulder. "Okay then, let's go!"
The two boys continued their trek, with Kyoon taking the lead. Soon Shin struggled to keep up. Tripping on a stone, soon shin grabbed his ankle. When he looked up, kyoon was not in sight. "Hyung Nim!" he called out. hearing his cries, kyoon smiled to himself and stayed out ofsight. Soon Shin stared across the empty landscape, fear spreading through him. attempting to crawl up a steep hillside, he slipped and stopped his fall by grabbing a branch. Seeing that his slipper was falling off his foot, he reached for it but then lost his grip. With a scream he rolled down the side of the hill
Kyoon whirled around at the sound of his friend's cry. "Soon Shin ah! Yi Soon Shin!" He ran back the way he came, looking for soon shin who was hidden from site behind some rocks and bushes.
Rubbing his eyes, he sat up and called for Kyoon, but there was no answer.
At his home, Song Ryong began to worry as a heavy rain began to fall.
Soon Shin ran to find shelter from the weather. Not knowing what else to do, he began blowing on his flute. Hearing the sound, Kyoon cried, "Soon Shin ah! Yi Soon Shin!" Losing his footing, he tripped down the hill, cutting his face. Hearing the flute again, he picked himself up and continued looking for his friend. He found him curled up against a boulder. "Soon Shin ah!"
Looking up from his pillowed arms, Soon Shin said in a grateful voice, "Hyung nim!" and threw himself in Kyoon's arms.
"Is your face alright?" kyoon asked, examining Soon Shin's head.
"Hyung nim! I'm okay," was all Soon Shin could say. He hugged his friend as if he would never let go.
"SOON SHIN AH!!! WON KYOON!!! SOON SHIN AH!!!!" aided by two servants with torches, Song Ryong called out for his friends. Coming down the hill, Kyoon carried Soon Shin on his back.
"Over there, sir!" one servant called out.
Song Ryong ran to his friends. "Soon Shin ah!"
"Hyung nim!"
"Thank goodness you're okay!" Song Ryong said in a relieved tone
"Hey nerd-o, what're you doing here?" Kyoon asked.
"Won Kyoon-"
"Don't bother lecturing me," Kyoon interrupted. Turning to the boy on his back he said, "Get off!" He rubbed his back with exaggerated annoyance. "For such a smaller person you're d**n heavy!"
Song Ryong reached out to Kyoon's face with a handkerchief. When he recoiled, he ordered, "Hold still!" In a softer voice he added, "I mean, you're bleeding." Kyoon allowed himself to submit to Song Ryong's ministrations while Soon Shin watched.
As they walked back, Song Ryong asked Kyoon, "Is your head alright? Will you really be okay to go home alone?"
Kyoon rubbed his head. "This isn't anything. I'm going now." He stopped himself as he was walking. Turning around he said, "Soon Shin ah, you're the first person to come with me that far. So, you're not a coward anymore."
A broad smile grew on Soon Shin's face at his praise. "Hyung Nim."

Soon shin walked home, a happy smile playing on his face, but his good mood was interrupted when a group of soldiers carrying torches ran by.
At a shrine, Soon Shin's father and a group of men were conducting a memorial service when the soldiers broke in.
"These are the traitors who follow Jo Gwon Jo! They must be punished! Arrest them all!"
As they began arresting those present, Soon Shin's father tried to escape by scaling a wall, but as he climbed over, he dropped the small wooden plaque that had his name on it. Soon Shin, watching his father, went to pick it up, but as he did, some of the soldiers rounded the corner and grabbed him as he tried to hide it behind his back. "No! No! You mustn't!"
As they held his son, Yi Jung was dragged out before his son. Angrily demaning what was going on, the officer informed him that he was being arrested for treason.

I am here in Los Angeles and KSCI and they already have English subtitles for Yi Soon Shin. Why can't they just use that instead of reinventing the wheel for other metro areas? Can anyone provide some insight into this?
