There is an interesting news report about Admiral Yi today. I translated it into English. An old painting depicting Geobukseon(=turtle boat. The world's first ironclad warship created by Admiral Yi Soon-shin in 1592) in Chosun period was made pubic in New York on August 17th, 2004. Yun Won-young, a 52-year-old businessman, released a photo of the painting which depicts 4 turtle-like warships on a silk fabric. (176cm in length and 240cm in height) The whole shape of Geobukseon has never been discovered, although there are some rough sketches from Admiral Yi Soon-shin's books or a few folk paintings. Mr. Yun said he bought this picture on January 2003 from a granddaughter-in-law of an American missionary, David Mauri(?), who had been the principal of Sungshil school in Pyoungyang, Korea. According to Mrs. Mauri, the painting was unearthed in 1867 when a castle wall near Niigata, Japan, was broken down. "According to the radiocarbon dating by researchers of Georgia University, this painting is estimated to be drawn about 300 to 350 years ago." Mr. Yun said. He also added some parts of the picture were likely repainted in Japan. reported by Kim Jae-Ho, New York. ( jaeho@chosun.com ) Chosun Ilbo, August-18-2004
