I agree w/all of you, Lucy, lizlib & hachiue. I'm not saying Jinsoo is unworthy of romantic love or anything like that, but I think the writers could have definitely done a lot better with this story line.
The cold hard fact is that Jinsoo will never lead a completely "normal" life, and they think the parents and family have to accept that fact and as a matter of fact accept Jinsoo because it seems like they are always trying to change him.

Phew! I'm so glad everyone took what I said the way I meant it. One can get in trouble voicing an opinion that says not everyone can do everything depending on their circumstances. And I like the alternate suggestions you all said for Jin-soo's character. It would have been great if they could have sent Jin-soo to school (even though they tried once and said he didn't like to see other kids like him--he only likes what is "beautiful" ) and shown him growing and learning and coming out of his shell even more. The shortcut to romance they seem to want to put him on is not respectful of Jin-soo's real needs. His relationship with Min-sup was a wonderful touch in this show, and bless Hee-soo for putting them together! I agree that that could go on and lead to other things for JS. P.S. Has anyone here seen the movie or read the book "Tim," by Colleen McCullough? The movie stars a very young (and OO-La-la) Mel Gibson as a "slow"--they term it "not the full quid"--young man and Piper Laurie as the older woman who eventually falls in love with him. It was far-fetched and Harlequin-Romancey, but the book at least put enough work into establishing the characters and the reasons for everything that happened, and so it turned out to be pretty believable.

That whole thing with him only liking what is "beautiful" kind of irked me. I mean, is he saying that he's not beautiful, or that people can't be beautiful if they have his condition? Throughout the exhibit, people were constantly talking about how pure and beautiful Jinsoo's heart was, so it seems odd that he wouldn't recognize that in another person who is not entirely normal.
The only books I've ever read by her are her last days of the Roman republic books, and, while I could tell those were a bit Harlequin-romancy, I could also tell that she'd put a lot of work into research to be able to tell the stories correctly. I'm assuming that she also put a lot of research into the condition behind Tim in the book you're talking about.

At several points they have the woman visit a teacher at a school for the mentally retarded because she wants to find out more about how to relate to Tim and about what his needs are (this is when they're just close friends), so it sort of rings true. Maybe the author did the same thing while writing the book.

Wow, after reading all of your comments, I must agree! At first I was all for the Jin-soo and Yeon-ji relationship. I thought it was cute if the two got together. But after reading other posts, maybe the Yeon-ji storyline should have just stayed out of it? I definitely wanted to see JS going off to college to advance his art skills and meet other ppl. At least then bring on the Yeon-ji storyline! The writers probably threw in Yeong-ji because they wanted ESM and DD to be happy. There were times in the drama where ESM was stroking JS's head as he slept and said, "Will my Jin-soo ever find love?" And DD would stand and watch looking sadly. Also maybe the writers wanted to make a point that even people with disabilities can find love too? I don't know. But I would rather see the writers have Jin-soo going off to college to study art. I think that would have been better?

Well, it looks as though the MPC writers were jerking us around a bit again. Last night Hee made it clear to Yeon-ji that she wasn't asking her to be Jin-soo's boyfriend. Huh! She sure was singing a different tune two days ago! I guess they must be so overworked (we know what a death march these dramas can be sometimes for everyone concerned) that they probably write one day's script the night before. Maybe someone said, "this doesn't make any sense!" and so they changed the direction right away.

Or maybe Heesoo's being her classic rainbow fox self and defrauding Yeonji by telling her it was completely platonic while hoping that she falls in love with Jinsoo. Otherwise, why would she be so excited about it? I swear, she's just like her mother. All of a sudden she started meddling in people's lives again and is happy as a clam.

Yep! And remember when Hee-soo was in her depression days? Jin-kook would tell her that she reminded him so much of her mother. Hee-soo even has that same smirk her mom has when she thinks she's doing something good for others.

aww man...seems like i havent posted in a long time, is this show still on? well i agree that hee-soo is just like her mom only she's less brash. its like a annoying mixture of her mom and dad. jin-soo falling in love is normal and i think it should be adressed. but the way esm dd and hee-soo is forcing the girl to come to the house all the time is a little ummm...creepy. but from the last time i saw the show i think she looks to him like her little brother (which is unfortunate for jin-soo)

Like on Friday's episode when they were just prowling around, waiting for Yeong-ji to come and then when she finally came, ESM was just dragging her in. Also, if Jinsoo is able to read (because he read the title of the seagull book), then those parents of his are just really stupid. Instead of stimulating his brain by reading with him, they just flop him in front of the tv.

I hated the way ESM was acting at the dinner table. When Jin-kook came in, she's all like, "Oh you're home?!" And quickly goes to get him a bowl. I don't know if it's because she wants to show off to Yeon-ji that she's a good stepmom or because she loves her family for real? I still remember those times when ESM treated JK like crap and now she wants to be the wonderful stepmom ? And another thing, ESM tells Jin-soo that he had better not beg Yeon-ji to let him go into her house. Yet, ESM is practically dragging Yeon-ji into their house. I do hope that Yeon-ji and Jin-soo form a special relationship. I'm happy that they are friends.

Bo Dude, I just realized that they are a special kind of stupid. I can't believe the way that they raised Jinsoo the way they did (as in babying him, feeding him in the mouth, just totally like an invalid) and it seems like such a waste of precious time. I feel he could have been so much more "normal" had they treated him that way in the first place.

(snaps gum) Because, see, like, Jinsoo's parents weren't encouraging him to live up to his true potential. They were sooo stifling him by not reading with him. And I bet that, like, the tv shows that they watched with him weren't even that interesting. Ugh.
