Hey, whadda mean? ABBA is cool. That's what I always put on when I'm not in a good mood. Always cheers me up. I bet HK would like ABBA for their bright and cheery songs. I will not get into the relative paucity of musical genius evident in the ABBA canon--I hope you forgive me. However, I make a guess: You are under the age of 30. Those are the only people I know who consider ABBA to be "cool" - probably something to do with not having grown up with it, LOL. Bo

And I like Muriel’s Wedding! No karaoke is complete without “Dancing Queen”. I bet you’ve got nothing good to say about Wham either. Okay, j/k with that one, but I do like my share of corny songs/groups.

I am well over 30 and remember ABBA's first go-round. At the time, the "cool" bands were still hard-rockin' like The Who or California-mellow like the Eagles. ABBA was thought of more along the lines of Leo Sayer or The Captain and Tennille. We hated 'em. The one thing I remember most about that time was when ABBA was on some show--I think it was Saturday Night Live?--and the next day at church, my friend's mom (in her 50s) said to us kids, all pleasantly surprised, "Hey, I sure do like that AB-ba!" (pronounced with the A not like "ah," but as in "abacus"). I always liked "Dancing Queen," mostly for its personal teenage associations, but to me that assessment of ABBA by the elder generation stood as the last word. I don't hate 'em, but those interested in pop musical history should take note that for years they stood as one of the quintessential pre-fab bands. To me and my sister, they were hilarious. We couldn't believe their lyrics, which could only have been written by people with a highly imperfect command of the English language. Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't the lyric, "Olly oxen-free, Take a chance on me?" That's what it always sounded like to us! OK, I know it's "Honey, I'm still free." But we didn't know that for 20 years!

Well, okay maybe now that I know the history behind the ABBA haters and non sympathizers I won't feel so puzzled.

I remember reading a letter to the editor in a music magizine responding to a dismissal of ABBA in an article. The writer pointed out that, no matter what you think of their music, ABBA gave hundreds of hours of enjoyment to millions of people worldwide (and if GC is any evidence, still do). I read that and thought, "OK, I'll cut them some slack." And I must confess, I turn up the radio and sing along when "Dancing Queen" comes on ( shhhh. . .don't tell anyone

...And I must confess, I turn up the radio and sing along when "Dancing Queen" comes on ( shhhh. . .don't tell anyone Darn, I published it in my blog before I noticed that last part.... hah, hah, hah. I happen to love/own the movie "Dick" (a Watergate farce, you bad thinking people) and they play a lot of disco, and D - Q is featured. Heavily. So it tends to stick in my head a lot, but just makes me think of that movie, so it's okay. But ABBA...is not forgiven.... sneeee....sneee...Bo

Well, remember about 1980......when disco officially died? ABBA was part of that disco craze in the 70's.
Well, anyway I still like them as well as the Eagles...lol Ever hear about the ABBA generation or ABBA teens? Their cover remix songs of ABBA sounds pretty good.

I remember reading back then that Abba had invested the money they made in various consumer product ventures. Even today, the Swedish delis in Andersonville (Ericson's and Wikstrom's) sell Abba brand paté-in-a-tube. It lacks the "backward B" logo, though, so I'm not sure if there's really a connection.

Yes. I meant A-teens. And yes, they're also from Sweden. I remember hearing their cover of Dancing Queen. It was okay. I prefer the original ABBA.
