OMG... is Young-Ian dying or something??? What first when through my mind was that I don't think she's dying but is planning to kill herself or something like that... and what's with checking to see if Ji-Woong can watch those videos, I mean they WERE sent to him.

I didn't watch tonight's episode yet, which I taped, but I did see yesterday's episode. A few episodes ago, Young-lan sent Ji-woong some winter clothes. The video tape was pretty creepy because she tells her son to take care of himself. Maybe she's so depressed that she's planning on suicide. It's really strange. If she cared that much for her son, she could have done everything legal to get custody of him, though she still wants to live her own life with a career.
If Eun-Soo and Jung-hee are to be married, she should just let Jung-hee become his "step-mother", but still keep in contact with her son through her. Young-lan's "now and then" presence in her son's life is really hurting and confusing him.

It's my understanding that this is pretty much impossible in Korea under the best of circumstances, and given that she "abandoned" her husband and son to begin with, I think she knows there's no reason to even try it. The father's family has a very strong claim; the family registry system means that the children of the marriage belong, pretty much literally, to the father and the nuclear family he was born to. People who watched "Yellow Handkerchief" seem to have a lot to say on the subject, so maybe they'll weigh in, too.
Personally, I think it seems that we are supposed to think Young-lan is dying or leaning toward suicide, though it doesn't make much sense to me. If she knew she were dying, it makes more sense that she would stick around and be with her son, even as an unwanted fifth wheel, since everyone but Jung-ae had pretty much accepted her presence.

I think they're trying to hint that she's dying...I was thinking about it and out of nowhere, I remembered an episode a few weeks back when YL we taking some medecine and Sung-ae walked in on her. She told her it was for a headache and even Sung-ae look at her as if something was fishy. Now all of a sudden she's looking sick in the hotel and sending cryptic tapes to her son, and telling Hee-soo's husband she's making him her son's guardian "in case anything happens".....sounds like they're cooking up an illness to me
edit: oh, and one last thing, how perfect that she's terminally ill now that the ex-mother-in-law has started to like/understand her...

Maybe this is the reason why Young-lan suddenly came on the scene, getting very attached to her son again. If she were a successful woman with a good job, she may have never returned. She may have an illness that she hasn't spoken of. Since there's nothing between her and Eun-Soo any longer, Young-lan may have wanted to become a permanent memory in her son's mind. Sending him the video may have finished her business with leaving her son because the tape will be something for him to remember her.
In the past episodes, I looked at Young-lan as a trouble-maker, but she returned not knowing that her ex had plans to marry Jung-Hee. Her ex-MIL shows nothing but contempt for her, so Young-lan probably knows that she'll get no sympathy if she lets everyone know that she's dying. Perhaps she knows that it won't be possible to return to the home of her EX, expecting her ex-MIL to care for her so that she can be near her child.

from yesterday's teaser, it seemed to me like YL was wearing a hospital gown! what if she really has a medical ailment? will eun-soo come back to her?

I wonder how Jung-ae will take the news when she finds out that Young-lan is in the hospital. In last night's episode, didn't she tell her husband something like, "When she's not here...I miss her. But when she's here, I can't stand seeing her face." It seems to me like Jung-ae and Young-lan have a I hate you-but I love you-ex MIL-ex DIL relationship.

yep looks like we'll get to see jung-ae's reaction to the news in tomorrow's episode. i can't wait to see how it'll be. i agree with Lovely that their relationship is a love-hate relationship. it kind of reminds me of some family relationships that are like: "I don't like you, but that doesn't mean I don't love you." haha

Darn! I missed Wednesday's episode. I taped it because I was at work, but set it at Channel 26 instead of 28. Now, after seeing the last 2 episodes, it seems that Young-lan left for America to have some kind of brain surgery. Maybe this is why she seemed so elusive but also offering sound advice to Eun-Soo's family.
Tonight, she called Jin-Kook to tell him, from her hospital bed, that she's all right, but who knows what her medical problem is.
It's just so sad that little Ji-Woong watches her video all the time, even sleeping with it while his Dad and Jung-Hee are getting married. In one way, Ji-Woong is confused because he doesn't have his birth parents together raising him. On the other hand, he's very fortunate to have so many adults concerned about him.

I too often feel the same way about Jung-Hee. She seems more attached to Ji-Woong than to Eun-Soo. Once they're married, will she give more attention to her step-son than to Eun-Soo? He might become very bored having a wife who just accepts him as he is. At least Young-lan pushed Eun-Soo into becoming independent from his parents. Any way, Ji-Woong is fortunate to have step-mother who will treat him as a son.
