english.yna.co.kr/Engnews/20050222/320000000020050222160659E8.html(LEAD) Lead Actress of 'The Scarlet Letter' Commits Suicide Lee Eun-joo SEONGNAM, South Korea, Feb. 22 (Yonhap) -- A popular South Korean movie actress, who played a gloomy mistress committing suicide in the film "The Scarlet Letter," hung herself on Tuesday, local police said. Lee Eun-joo, 25, was found dead by her elder brother at her apartment in Seongnam, just a few kilometers south of Seoul, they said. She was together with her mother and the elder brother until early in the morning, he said, adding that he returned to the apartment in the afternoon when he could not reach her by phone. The police found what appears to be a suicide note saying "Mother and brother, I am sorry." Lee graduated from Seoul's Dankook University last Friday. She is best known to South Koreans for her lead role in the MBC television drama "Bulsae" and appeared in several movies, including "Taegukgi," "Oh! Sujong" and "Bungee Jumping of Their Own." "The Scarlet Letter," which was shown as the closing film at last year's Pusan International Film Festival before its nationwide release in late October, was the last work in her filmography. Her family said Lee suffered much stress from her portrayal of sexually explicit roles in her latest film. Police are trying to determine the exact motive of the suicide. sshim@yna.co.kr (END)

Actress Lee Eun-ju Commits Suicide [KoreaTimes 2005-02-22 16:38] By Lee Yong-sung
Staff Reporter
Popular television and film actress Lee Eun-ju committed suicide on Tuesday. She was 25.
Lee, the star of such hit films as ``Tae Guk Gi¡¯¡¯ (2004) and ``The Scarlet Letter¡¯¡¯ (2004) as well as the recent television drama ``Firebird (Pheonix),¡¯¡¯ was found in the walk-in closet of her apartment in Pundang, Kyonggi Province, where she is said to have hung herself.
Lee was reportedly discovered by her elder brother, who went to her apartment after she failed to answer her phone. A will has not yet been found.
Though they believe it to be suicide, the police are investigating the incident.
Born Nov. 16, 1980, Lee made her debut as an actress in the film ``Rainbow Trout¡¯¡¯ in 1998. Lee¡¯s other films include ``Virgin Stripped Bare by Her Bachelors¡¯¡¯ (2000), ``Bungee Jumping of Their Own¡¯¡¯ (2000) and ``Hello! UFO¡¯¡¯ (2003).
Lee, who graduated from Dankook University on Friday with a major in acting, was reported to have been in good spirits according to her professors and school friends, making her sudden suicide more shocking.
danlee@koreatimes.co.kr *******************************************************************
In her will she wrote with blood "I wanted to do movies so much, you can't call this a living. I don't want to blame anyone, sorry, I love you".
She suffered from severe depression according to the testimony of her brother and close friends. She also had trouble sleeping due to stress and depression caused by not-enough-success of the movie "Scarlet Letter" despite her efforts. Her acquaintances revealed that she became ashamed of the nude scenes she went through in the movie.
Anyway she seriously shocked the nation and the entertainmnet industry in Korea. This is first time in over 10 years to see a big star like her to commit suicide. The cosmetics company Enprani is trouble - they were just about to release commericals of Lee.
Suicide is foolish no doubt about that - and this is a big loss for the whole nation (Korea) as well. She was such a great actress.

Yeah, it's a sad news for all those who have learn to knows and loves her..
Just because 1 movie failed doesnt meant that it's the end of the world. Too sad to think someone can take own life for granted and throw it away.
May god bless her soul.

One news report pointed out that most of her roles were about death.
From "Taekugi- the Brotherhood of War" to "Scarlet Letter", "Bungee Jumping" "Love Letter" and so forth.
Now that I think about it, it is a weird coincidence that almost all her roles in the movies "killed" her in the middle of the scene.
Could that add to depression? I did hear how hard it is for some actors to get over their roles. That and the additional malicious scandal of X-file in the overall entertainment industry (half rumor-half truth?! No one really knows) currently spreading around Internet and reaching as far as Taiwan, China and Japan may have added the stress - though others say she's quite clean on that list.

Alanna, what are these x-files I keep reading about? Is it an entertainment show? Or a tabloid? Also, did you see the Scarlet Letter? I just can't get over how sad this is.

Yes, Alanna, is that X-file some sort of smear campaign about actors' private lives or movies they've done? Has this affected anyone's career, do you know?
And Alanna, this is really a small question in view of the whole horrible situation, but what the heck is that movie, "Virgin Stripped Bare by Her Bachelors"? That sounds terrible; is it just the translation?

They sell it at YesAsia, I'll go check it out and give you the summary. I read it yesterday but forgot it already, I've read so much the past few days.

I see no one has answered about the X-file. You can find news reports by Googling on Korean "Entertainment X-file"--they do a more concise job of describing it than I could. And no, we can't read it. I heard a couple of specifics about some of "our" stars, but most info like that has disappeared from the 'Net now that lawsuits are being pursued. It's probably not a good idea for me to repeat what I read (not because *I* might get sued, but because the allegations might disillusion people). You might run across that stuff yourself, anyway, though you won't find the file itself anywhere.
