I thought the drama made progress in episode 2. In episode 3 though it seemed to go back to the dullness of episode 1. I realize they're trying to show what made them get divorced and how things got to that point but this part of the drama feels chopped, rushed and forced on viewers. Some of the scenes are just akward. Also, Ji Eun comes off as a spoiled brat. Apart from the miscarriage, she keeps talking about what she's had to give up for love but it just makes her look spoiled. I want the drama to forward 10 years already.

I want the drama to forward 10 years already. You got your wish. But did it help, really? The badly driven automobile is the deux ex machina in this drama (and I'm aware of the pun there). Ji-eun meets gastationboy because of one, who became an orphan (presumably losing the family fortune) because of one. Her father is killed by an auto, after being toppled by an illegally ridden motorbike, plunging her and her family (including Yoon Na-young who apparently is running away and hiding from Ki-hoon and the insurance business by calling herself Young-eun--ho ho clever disguise--and becoming a pseudo-prostitute in the home of the most profoundly selfish female since -- oh, I don't know -- Yoon Na-young, and I never noticed her nose before did she break it or something?) into poverty. Oh, speaking of motorbikes, if she's so traumatized by her father's death, how come it doesn't bother her to be on the back of a motorbike being driven by a fool who breaks the rules? Finally, Ji-eun's friend was crippled by an auto accident and now, Lo, behold!, she has her "Will" in the form of Ji-eun's "Will"--apparently, because of the auto accident. If this was the first drama I'd tuned into, I'd conclude Korean people cannot drive worth 12 won. I still don't care about these people. I certainly don't care about that playboy who killed his brother and now has the nerve to sulk about it. It was probably another auto accident. Tch. Aigu. Bo

LOL! Great post, Bo. I think most of us seem to be on the same page, as you've expressed so well above. Episodes 1 & 2 were fair, but 3 & 4 did seem to get a little more contrived. We want to start caring more about the characters or we won't get hooked into this drama. The 10-years-later new love interest (with the reddish spiked hair) is just so annoying I wish I could fast forward through his scenes. What also strikes me is the hokey theme song music that is played at the most inappropriate moments! La la la la la la la laaaaaa.......... sounds like something from a lame 1970's B movie. Anyone else notice that? Sorry, just had to vent a little!

Shame on you, knov1. That's a spoiiiiiiiiler. = Bo
(this part is self-evident, I think) Eric carries the guilt of his brother's death with him because he feels he could've prevented him from dying.

Ahem...
NOW, do you know why I'm still saying (as of episode 16) that I like/dislike the show? I like Ji-eun at times, and totally dislike her at other times. ALthough, I have to say I don't like Miran AT ALL! I don't like Eric (whatever his drama name is - Bo called him playboy) but I like and dislike "Will" - depending on the storyline at the time.
Oh to be trapped in the vacuum of watching subtitled dramas! If it's subtitled and doesn't totally stink, I'll watch it thinking it will get better.
This drama has it's ups and downs but I have to say that I'm not as attached to it as some dramas. I can record it and not be heartbroken I've missed a few minutes!

I can record it and not be heartbroken I've missed a few minutes! Yes, Melissa, that's a plus. I do have to say, this is entertaining, on an American soap opera level. My most frequent comment is, "Wha- aaaaaaaa?" (Followed by Bob-my-Bob's "What! What! What's wrong!" and "STOP that!") It's just so ridiculous. And why should everything be at the high mark? They cannot all be Dae Jang-geum, Yellow Hankie or Who's My Love. I compare this series with Winter Sonata, on which the most absurd series of events occured since Ginger took 150 evening gowns on a three-hour tour, and yet, and yet--the acting on Winter Sonata was brilliant, and I believed everything because they made me WANT to believe it; I was hooked from the moment I began to watch. All the themes being explored here on Phoenix are pretty much explored on all the daily dramas--loyalty, lost love, parental disapproval, reversal of fortune--but they just are not "getting" me with it. It's not that the acting is bad. I just cannot put my finger on what's wrong. Maybe that's why I keep watching. Just to find out. What's wrong. Bo

I thought she looked familiar. Man, it looks like she gained some weight. I thought I was the only one who was going to complain about Playboy ( we need to fill RH/EA’s void) I was so annoyed by him/his performance that I felt like kicking and shaving him. “It’s okay to fall in love w/me.” Puleez.

Shame on you, knov1. That's a spoiiiiiiiiler. = Bo But that info is part of his character bio so I didn't think it would be considered a spoiler. Edit: I read the Soju's post and noticed the part regarding his brother was edited out. However, the character bio I read included that info so I didn't think it was a spoiler.

Oh my goodness that’s Na-young from YH—are you sure? I thought she looked familiar. Man, it looks like she gained some weight. She looks like So Lee Hyun (Na Young from YH) but that's not her. So I take it you guys didn't like Eric? I thought his character was funny. I mean he's not a great actor or anything, he looks too young for the part and he had some corny lines but I think his character brought some life to the drama. I did find it weird though that Ji Eun and Eric (can't remember his name so I'm just calling him Eric) still remember their brief encounter after 10 years. I mean, how often do you still remember someone from 10 years ago? Maybe if they had gone on a date or if they knew each others names it would make more sense but they just stared at each other without saying anything.

I was getting worried that I had worse memory than I thought. Eric--funny? Maybe fun to laugh at while he's delivering those awful "player" lines. You read my mind--he does look way too young for the part he's supposed to be playing, I guess that's why they made him keep his peach fuzz instead of shaving. (SORRY, gal-ck, I couldn't stand it any more and fixed your quote so it'd show up. I know, I know--I gotta get a life... -Bo) (PS - I hate when they have that unshaved look, it hardly ever works...)

She looks like So Lee Hyun (Na Young from YH) but that's not her. Yeah, I think she looks exactly like her, only the nose is all wrong. The same expressions, the same style of acting, the same voice, the way she carries herself, and for her to be playing a similarly selfish character, well... It just freaks me out every time I see her on screen. As for Eric, I'm just not buying the character. His performance is completely flat. He looks like a refugee from a boy-group trying to act...which he is. Don't think I'm discounting him just for that. One of those N'Sync guys is a pretty good actor, and two of the Wahlberg brothers, Mark and Donnie (one or both of whom were "Marky Mark"), are actually nearly brilliant. This Eric guy just doesn't seem to have the chops to carry off a role where, if you think about it, he's pretty much playing himself. Bo

I'm kind of confused...which character are you talking about? I've not seen JiEun (Lee Eun Joo) in a drama before... MiRan - played by Jung Hye Young was in To Be With You and played JaeHee (the wicked sister). YoungEun (younger sister) - played by Kim Bin Woo was in My Lovely Family (never saw this drama). BokJa (friend) - played by Lee Yoo Jin who was in Beautiful Days. None of these characters (that I can tell) was on YH... Which one are you talking about?

;D Nevermind....If I had read the thread entitled "JiEun's sister" before commenting on THIS thread...I would have seen who it was you were talking about. :-) (I personally, didn't think they looked that similar)

Now you have to admit that for all the faults with the Eric character, it was a pretty wry joke to have him singing karaoke very badly with Ji-eun's sister in the night club scene. And how pathetic is it that we look for these kinds of things instead of being completely entralled in the drama?

Yeah, BC--I was laughing about that at the time, it was quite clever. And, Melissa, you've had the advantage of watching the show for many more episodes (and it sounds like you never noticed the resemblance between Na-young/YH and Young-eun/Phoenix in the first place), so even though the two "selfish twins" seem exactly alike to many of us now, maybe that feeling will fade for us as we get into the drama. But for now, geez, it freaks me out. Bo
