the next day, ji soon made it a priority to show off his new aide. promoting him to the rank of commander, he nodded approvingly at how commanding a presence his new soldier had. and ji young had told him about his martial arts genius. ji soon couldn't wait for a demonstration.
Im ho gwon followed his "master" onto the training field. "fool" he tought to himself. "if i train your army, do you think they'll swear loyalty to you? a man who fights for the love of a woman who doesn't even want him? no, they will be loyal to me. i will pass on some of the secrets of my martial arts to them - but only enough to ensure their loyalty and to give them an advantage over the soldiers of the archfiend."

standing on the platform overlooking the rows of soldiers, ji soon announced, "to improve the quality of the imperial army, i have enlisted the skills of my new 2nd in command, Im ho gwon!" the men recognized the man who had felled ten soldiers in a matter of minutes. "from now on, in addition to learning the forms of subak, you will also learn the forms of his art as well."
Im ho gwon stepped forward and bowed. He addressed the men gathered in a quite voice, but the sound of it struck fear into the men's hearts. there was something deadly about his silent calm that belied the great fighter underneath.
"As soldiers of the imperial army, you must be prepared for anything. as yi jang goon is your commander, I plan to turn this regiment into an elite class of soldiers. I demand discipline and hard work. if you feel that you are not prepared to give me what i ask, you are free to leave this regiment and to join another." his eyes narrowed as he scanned the men's faces. the men were murmuring to each other but no one stepped out of place to leave. "very well! in preparation for tomorrow's training, i am ordering you to rest well." his voice took on a smug tinge. "you will need it" he said ominously.

when the troops had gathered after their enforced rest, ho gwon stepped forward and said, "I expect from all of you as much as I can give.if i find that some of you are not giving me your full effort, the consequences will be...unpleasant." Realizing that the word "unpleasant" was used as a euphemism and, the men nervously shouted their obeisance.
The day was spent learning a whole new series of kicks, jumps, punches and throws. Their new commander had not been joking when he said that they would need the rest. Those that tired too quickly were ordered to assume painfully difficult fighting stances for extended periods of time. The first soldier who sat down to rest before the rest of the soldiers was a prime example. When Commander Im saw him sitting, he called him over. "what do you think you're doing? did i give you permission to sit?"
the poor man, still out of breath began to apologize, but before he could finish his sentence, the commander ordered him to follow him. telling him to assume a prostrate position, he explained. "this is an exericise to teach you discipline and to build stamina". bringing over a small bowl of water, he ordered the man to prepare to do a push up. placing the bowl of water on the man's back, he told him, "now i want you to do 100 repetitions for me and if you spill a single drop within that time, i will set the count back at zero." all the men had stopped practicing, watching the commander. he turned to them and said in an icy tone, "i don't recall telling the rest of you to stop." the men hurriedly reassumed their training.
at the end of the day, the men were barely able to return to their quarters. supporting one another and wincing from the new level of pain they had discovered, the soldiers wondered if they would survive general yi's new commander.
