Chang bi waited with an expectant look on her face. "Was there something you wanted to ask me?"
Though his usual way was to be perfectly blunt, he wasn't sure that would result in a favorable outcome in this situation. so he tried a different tack. "I was thinking, instead of the characters you had selected, perhaps we could attempt those tomorrow."
She looked curious. "Why" she asked.
If it was possible for Superior General Choi Bu to smile shyly, he did. "I'd like to learn to write my name."
Chang bi practically smacked her forehead. "How foolish of me!" she laughed. "Here I am so concerned with teaching you to read that I forgot the most basic thing!" Laughing at herself, she put the characters away and pulled out a fresh sheet of paper. A few strokes of the brush, and it was finished.
Choi stared at it wonderingly - he had never seen his name before. Turning a skeptical eye to his teacher he asked, "Now this is MY NAME isn't it? You didn;t substitute "idiot" or "bastard" or something like that."
She laughed at the idea. "It hadn't occurred to me" she said merrily, "but now you've put the idea in my head."
He looked at his name for a long time and smiled. She wasn't sure why, but she felt gratified to see that smile. He seemed like a man who had found something beautiful that he never knew he had. He bowed a thank you to her with his head.
"would you show me how to write your name?" he asked.
she smiled and brushed her name on the paper next to his. he looked intently at the characters. "there's one missing" he said.
"what?" she took the paper and examined her name. "no, it's all there" she said puzzled. Choi put out his hand. Realizing he was asking for the brush, chang bi handed it to him. She watched as he slowly and painstakingly wrote out a character between their two names. He'd obviously practiced this one a great deal. She'd never seen his face so serious.
Finished he turned the paper and pushed it gently to her.
The first thing that stunned her was that he had actually written the character quite beautifully. It must have taken him a long time she thought.
The second thing that stunned her even more, was that what he had written was the character "love".

Looking at the piece of rice paper in front of her, Chang bi wasn't sure what to think. She looked up slowly from the paper and met choi's eyes. She'd never seen him look that way at her before. Or perhaps she had, but hadn't noticed.
"I didn't wish to make you uneasy" he explained. "If you find this foolish and want nothing to do with me in that way, I would understand, and would still like to continue to learn to read with you."
she didn't know what to say. "this is a very complicated character" she finally said.
"it is" choi replied.
"it must have taken a great deal of practice for you to write this so beautifully."
"it did."
she picked up the piece of paper and looked at it again. when she thought about this man, and how he had lived his entire life, she found it impossible to believe that such a man would make her the object of his affections. but when she pictured him, an uneducated soldier, practicing this character over and over again, she realized that he truly had, and she looked at him with new eyes.
"choi jang goon" was all she said.
not wanting to put her in the position of having to answer awkwardly, he held his hand and asked her respectfully, "would you allow me to keep this?" but she knew what he was really asking her.
smiling warmly at him, she nodded.

the archfiend sat down with general du and said without much ceremony, "My eldest son, Ji Soon, loves your daughter."
du was shocked. this was the last thing he expected to hear from the emperor.
"but" ui min continued, "he is not sure how she feels. do you have any idea."
general du shifted uncomfortably in his chair and cleared his throat. how was he supposed to tell him..."yi jang goon" he began, but was interrupted by sound of hoofbeats slowing down outside his house. motioning for the archfiend to follow him quietly, he walked to the door.
after returning her horse to the stables, choi took chang bi back to general du's home. after he had helped her to dismount, chang bi took the paper with their names and after folding it neatly, she tucked it into his armor. mounting his horse, choi turned it around and before taking off, he patted the part of his armor in which the paper was hidden. chang bi waved until she couldn't hear his horse any longer.
general du led the emperor back inside his house. ui min looked at him and said, "I understand." not wanting to embarrass his friend's niece, he left for the palace through a different entrance.

The next day, the archfiend caught up with his son as he was on his way to see ji-eun. well, not ji eun so much as her governess the archfiend thought.
Ji Soon greeted his father with a hopeful smile."ah buhn nim!" he hoped it was good news. today was the first day he would not be spending regular time with chang bi.
the archfiend was not looking forward to what he had to tell his son. he didn't have to. when he got close enough to ji soon, the expression on his face spoke volumes to his son.
"she loves someone else" he said, crestfallen. his father nodded.
the archfiend wasn't sure what to do. he wasn't really very good with words of consolation or advice, but he wanted to be sensitive to his son's feelings.
"who? who is he?" ji soon asked.
"i don't know" his father lied.
ji soon looked at his father with a determined expression. "perhaps if i tell her that i care for her as well, that might change her mind."
"ji soon ah, i'm not sure that-"
his son shook his head. "i have to try. sow the field, right ah buhn nim?" he said with a rueful laugh.
he entered ji eun's room, and the archfiend put a hand to his forehead and sighed - he felt a very big headache coming on

ji soon waited until ji eun had gone to her tutor before approaching chang bi.
"yi jang goon" she said with her usual warm smile, "thank you so much for the riding lessons! you were an excellent teacher."
ji soon had never felt so nervous. "would you walk with me?" he asked her.
if she had any idea what his intent was, she certainly didn't look like it. she simply smiled again and accepted.
they walked over to a quiet area of the palace. shaded by trees, ji soon sat down on a bench and asked her to join him. as she sat down, he couldn't help but notice how lovely she looked in her pink and lilac gown. the mourning period for her mother now over, she looked even more beautiful in colors. he was silent for a while, trying to phrase his question as eloquently as possible. chang bi asked him, "are you alright yi jang goon?" apparently his gaze had been locked on the ground.
"oh! yes, I ..." ji soon cleared his throat. "chang bi, i've been impressed by you since my sister first introduced us." she nodded thanks for his praise. "you know how much my sister adores you," he continued. looking into her eyes he admitted, "and i do as well."
it took a while for what he had said to sink in. when she realized he was professing his feelings for her, she reacted exactly the way he hoped she would not - uncomfortably.
"yi jang goon, I-"
"love someone else?" ji soon finished for her. when she nodded, he asked, "perhaps with time you would love me instead?" when she didn't look convinced he reached for the last straw that he had. "and you would be be such a wonderful empress to the nation when i take my father's place."
the eyes that looked back at him were filled with friendship only. "yi jang goon" she said regrettfully, "i'm flattered beyond belief that you have taken notice of me, but-"
ji soon couldn't help but ask her, "who is he?"
"jang goon..."
"please tell me!" he begged. "if you can't return my affections at least please tell me."
she looked at him sadly. "yi jang goon..."
knowing she didn't want to answer him, he stood and left abruptly

though ji soon was hurt by the fact that his feelings would never be reciprocated, he cound he was more concerned with finding out who had made it impossible chang bi to accept him. what did this other suitor possess that he didn, he thought to himself.
ji soon went to visit his sister after chang bi had left for the day. "ji eun ah," he called to her.
"oh lah buh nim!" she was always so happy to see him.
he smiled at her. "ji eun ah, do you know if chang bi likes any of the men here at the palace?"
"other than you?" she asked.
"other than me," he repeated. "does she ever mention anyone else?"
ji eun screwed up her face as she thought hard on her brother's question. "well, the only people who she mentioned who were boys were papa, her uncle, you and uncle jang goon." she looked confused for a second. "why?"
"oh nothing." he kneeled down so that he was level with his sister. "please don't say anything to chang bi about what i asked you alright?" she nodded. "go and play then" he told her. she hugged his knees and ran off.
