Sorry this is late; life got weird.
Not real enthusiastic about this one. Sayu’s death, it fell flat (no pun intended) and was disappointing. The climactic event of the series and it was ordinary and unremarkable. Such a good character he was, he deserved better. And the way his injury was staged, completely ridiculous. Yeogusu gets multiple clean shots at him and gets away without a scratch, and Sayu is standing so far on the front of the fortress wall that he falls over it. And the Goguryeo troops on top of the wall aren’t able to do anything to rescue him or at least make his capture difficult. Yes he was undoubtedly overaggressive in real life or he wouldn’t have gotten himself killed...but come on does anybody really buy this. Inexcusable.
I did like the quiet of KG sitting with Sayu as he died and even attending to him. There was a dignity and respect about it that worked well.
KG: “Nobody heated me up like you and nobody ever will.” Bad writing.
Sayu: “My son and my grandsons will make you stop. They will stop Baekje from racing forward.” Good writing. He’s always been a better character than KG.
Sayu’s body was returned peacefully to the enemy? Really? That’s something we needed details on.
The narrated text:
The regional nobility is probably deciding who to side with.” Well there’s an interesting story, how about some of that and less princesses!
“He is the son of a blacksmith and Gongna.” Who or what is a Gongna? Referring to Dandan.
“So what? If he killed Sayu he can be appointed a commander. Prince Yeohwi was a commander.” So the queen is sticking up for her husband and having faith that he’ll do the right thing. Whatever the reason it’s being written this way, she certainly has progressed from the scheming prince-mom that she used to be. Nice to see. And now Wi Birang is doing the same, not buying Jin Seung’s deal. Kind of surprising that the series is presenting non-Baekje pirates as being more loyal to the king and more principled than Baekje nobles...but whatever, at least it’s character development and that’s always welcome.
“The Xianbei have problems because of the princes’ upheaval.” If anybody wants some background on this, here it is...and be forewarned that it’s extremely complicated history:

Okay so Yeohwa at the gravesite, it looks like she did accept the lie that was told to her and she does still believe that her son is dead. And wow that flashback of Yeohwa and KG, reminder of how compelling that relationship used to be. What a loss.
Why is Japan Girl still here? The queen wanted her sent home. Or is there something I’ve forgotten? Shame on me because this is such a meaningful and important storyline. mm-hmm
Come on, Yeogusu walks right into Wiryegung Palace and right into Yeohwa’s chambers? Really? Ugh, good grief.
“It was written on a hair ribbon that my mother valued very much.” Good cliffhanger there! So Yeohwa finally finds out. Hopefully that means we see more of her in the final four episodes, and hopefully doing more than just leading the evil cabal of rebels.

The narrated text:
In 371, Sayu dies in the battle at Pyeongyangseong. His posthumous name is King Gogukwon. King Gogukwon took the throne in 331 after King Micheon. He fought against Yan the entire time over the occupation of Liaodong. He also fought over the peninsula against Baekje. The death of King Gogukwon shocked the international society of East Asia. Gu Bu took the throne after Sayu. He was King Sosurim, the 17th king of Goguryeo. King Sosurim was given a heavy responsibility to restore Goguryeo and regain the land lost to Baekje.Gugeom: “That’s enough. The king of a neighboring country died. They are in mourning. We shouldn’t mock Goguryeo.” Well that’s awfully mature. Good for him.
