This one had an ominous start to it. First we got the narrated text:
Then an abrupt time jump...and most of the characters don’t look a day older. A few look fifteen years older, a few look a little older, but most of them look the same. Boo hiss...
“You look vigorous and brave like a true man.” No, he looks pampered and entertainment-industry-constructed like a true pretty-boy. Is that why I have the urge to slap him? Or is it the simplistic cliche prince lines they’ve written for him to say? Maybe some of both. And then we get Yeohwa’s nephew who’s all frowny and intense in a very obvious way, ooooh he’s the teenage rival. It felt like the whole thing was going to deteriorate into a teenager fusion series...and that bratty teenage princess didn’t help at all either. Neither did the nephew later in the episode, winning a one-against-five practice battle in about twenty seconds. Ugh good grief. Oh and couldn’t they have cast princes who at least looked a tiny bit like one or the other of their parents? Not good not good...
Fortunately things got back to normal, at least for now.
Just for future reference: Gosanguk is Taiwan and Heukchiguk is the Philippines.
Sa Gi: “I’m sorry she doesn’t like me.” Yeah but not so sorry that you’ll let her off the hook from an arranged marriage. But wow this is already getting sooo annoying. Okay princess, we know you don’t like the guy. Do we really need this in the story?
Very good idea, the scene of the civilians fake-surrendering to the Baekje army. Wow even old ladies brandishing daggers and charging soldiers! Just like that it establishes how difficult this will be and gives a great perspective of the thinking among the regular people. “Chimmidarye isn’t like the other Mahan statelets. There isn’t a distinct line between soldiers and people.” Yep, that’s been made very clear now, how unusual a situation this is.
Yeohwa: “I buried all of my personal feelings with my son.” If only you knew you were talking to his murderer. Will Jin Seung ever be outed for what he did? Sure hope so.
KG invites Yeohwa’s nephew along to war to keep him from causing trouble at home...and of course Yeowha saw through it right away. Of course she did. Nothing gets by her. Is it just me or is she the most compelling character in the series? Her bringing the nephew to the palace to send him off to war, easily the most suspenseful moment in the episode.
Overall this was a transitional episode so it didn’t do much on its own, good or bad.
p.s. Who the heck was Mok Nageungja? That name has never been uttered in the series before. He’s co-commanding the Mahan campaign with Jin Godo, well geez let’s hope we meet the guy at some point.
Mahan was a union of 54 statelets. It’s wasn’t easy to take over. It was one of the great acccomplishments of KG and took about 20 years to accomplish. Baekje attacked in two directions to conquer Mahan. Unit 1, led by Jin Godo attacked the west area and moved south. Unit 2, led by Mok Nageungja attacked the east area toward Garaguk. Chimmidaryeguk, the last target, was difficult to take.Well dangit if this was such a long and challenging process, why did they blow right past nearly all of it? And for what, the maybe-it-happened-maybe-it-didn’t Liaoxi stuff? We’ll deal with this after the series ends but it was a very irritating thing to learn.
