Some real good stuff in this one, and a few things not so good. And okay I’m not Einstein but some of it was very confusing.
Maybe it was just having to rely on subs and not catching every nuance in the dialogue, but I was completely confused about whether Yeohwa really knew that her baby was in that burning building. If she knew he wasn’t in there then she put on the performance of a lifetime...and the thing is she’s definitely smart enough and driven enough to do it. I assumed when she sent Eul Mahul and Dandan away with the baby she knew that they’d be long gone and the baby wouldn’t be in that building. But she sure acted like she didn’t know...
...and as far as the nanny and baby who were burned alive in the building, well who were they? Were they sacrificed for the prince’s sake? If Yeohwa knew the deal, did she deliberately have a baby planted in there as a decoy? Frankly I did not like watching that at all, not one tiny little bit. This is all purely fictional so seeing that kind of horrible death for no historical purpose was not something I want to see, ever. There had darned well better be an important purpose to it in the end.
You have to wonder why Yeohwa never came up with an escape plan and a safe hiding place for the next time the Jins came to get her and the baby. Because there was always a chance it would happen again. Frankly that’s a big clunker in the plot, because of course she's smart enough to have done so and certainly would have done so after the first time it happened.
They capture a Wiryegung servant who tells Jin Seung exactly where to find the baby...and they kill him anyway? Totally low class move. That was terrible. I guess the point was to protect Jin from being outed as the baby’s killer but it was unnecessary. All Jin had to do was go in there himself and look, no servant needed. Boo hiss.
Again in this episode, more of the combat scenes that are commendably intense but as usual you can’t figure out what the heck is going on.
“Leave. I lost a grandson, I can’t lose a daughter too. Please leave her alone!” Wow give Yeohwa’s mom huge credit, that took serious guts cursing out the king like that. You can see where Yeohwa gets it. Enjoyed that scene...the entire scene in fact, even with my not knowing if Yeohwa was putting him on or not. Either way there were a lot of genuine frustrations motivating her.
“You’re a weak woman. How can you go to an unfamiliar land with a baby?” Ha! Eul Mahul obviously doesn’t know the first thing about Dandan, does he.
“Are you back?” Are you kidding? But after that clunker it was actually was a pretty good scene in the throne room between Yeochan and KG. Well written.
“Prince Yeohwi gave me this before he died. He told me to give it to you when the time is right.” VERY nice! I had completely forgotten about that piece of Biryu’s written order. And it supersedes KG’s promise to Prince Yeohwi so it seals Prince Yeochan’s fate. That is really good story construction, to drop that little piece back in after so long and resolve a conflict with it. Bravo.
So apparently KG is just accepting that one faction or both factions of rebel princes lit the fire that killed his son? How has this not gotten out that Jin Seung did it? Nobody saw him do it? I’m confused by that.
“How can you say that?” Exactly. Why did Hae Geon go bonkers all of a sudden and demand Wiryegung and the Hae clan be wiped out? What is his interest in doing so? Does he see King Gye’s plan in tatters so he’s cutting his losses and backing KG? Or is this some sort of new angle to accomplish the plan? More confusion.
Oh and tearing into his father for attempting to murder the king? Seriously? Does he think we all have short memories? Careful what you say there, king-killer, you may be tying your own noose.
A double execution? Oh well, two heads are better than one!
The silence in that execution scene, with the wind blowing and then the flashback to King Biryu, well done. Just the right touches.
“Eoraha, it’s cold in here.” Yes it is and you can see the breath on every one of them. Wherever they shot that scene, to make it look like an ice cave, nice going. Maybe it really was some frozen cave someplace...but whatever, big credit for authenticity.
I do have to say, especially after some of the scenes in this episode, I’m getting tired of KG’s lack of expression or emotion or intensity. Early in the series it was welcome, what with all of the craziness in the palace, but by now it’s gotten old and tired and annoying. The actor playing him just has that same look and same monotone all the time. I keep wondering if he’s trying to emulate Choi Soo Jong. We’ll get back to this after the series ends...but come on, they tell him his baby son was murdered and he barely reacts at all. Just another day at the office. Seriously?
Anyway, right now there’s some unexplained stuff left hanging there...but this series has been excellent about not leaving things unresolved or unexplained, so I’m not complaining yet. Let’s see what we get in 46.
