This could have been a weird or bad (or both) episode with so much of the storyline moving to the new setting. But the story continues to be entertaining and the writing is still good, and there’s almost none of the groaner stuff that plagued some of the historicals we’ve watched here. Very little to find fault with about this episode.
“If they took her do you think they’d be wandering around the market?” Oh I like her already. Talking sense to the head guy. Hope we see more of her, whoever she is.
“I will prove my innocence by fighting Wi Birang.” And then Wi does a pointless forward flip. Please let’s not turn this into the first half of Emperor of the Sea, okay? (To be fair there’s been very little silliness in the combat scenes overall.)
“He was headed towards Wanwoldang.” Well duh you idiot prince, that possibility never even occurred to you? Sheesh. And it didn’t occur to the new king either—that one is shocking. How could he not have expected trouble?
Wussy princes trying to sword-fight, just stop it already. Too bad Yeowhi didn’t just kick their butts, every one of them.
“You shamefully suggested marrying my mother.” And there it is: Yeohwi is her son.
“This isn’t a fair fight. I stabbed him. He cannot even stand.” Oh good grief, you couldn’t have said that BEFORE they started fighting? Ugh! She may clean up nice but early assessment is she’s no rocket scientist.
“If he vomits blood, he’ll die.” Hey that guy has watched historical dramas! Ha!
So we had not just one but two callback objects in this one: the jade gem that Payoon was carrying, and Yeogu’s mother’s ring. Have said this before but I like those kinds of things. Rewards you for sticking with a series and paying attention.
“Kill all the guards who were at Wanwoldang last night. It doesn’t matter whose guards they were.” Well that seems like a stupid waste of good soldiers. This new king is showing some disturbing flashes of idiocy. Surprising and disturbing.
The ending was very good. Especially the fact that Yeogu was NOT in one of those three coffins. It makes sense that the prince wouldn’t be put in such high risk right away. A lot of historicals would have put him in there and have him jump right up and lead the ambush single-handedly. The way it happened here was much more sensible, with the weapons in the third coffin. Nicely written. Looking forward to seeing what happens.
