The overhead shot that opened the episode was great! Across the top of the boat, above the battle. Must have taken some work to set that up. Very nice.
And Prince Yeosan in the net, who isn’t gonna love that.
Now wait just a darned minute here. Yeosan says he’s Biryu’s THIRD son? Okay does that mean he’s younger than Yeogu? I thought he had two sons by the Queen and then two by Jin Saha...but maybe I assumed that and assumed incorrectly. Geez I wish somebody in one of these episodes would spell this out for us.
Where did Yeogu get that sword? Just sayin’.
Yeogu: “I’m a man, but I don’t enjoy seeing a naked woman.” Ohhh-kaaaay....Well now we know what kind of man he is, don’t we...Seriously that has to be one of the weirdest lines I’ve ever heard in a historical. What is the point? That was a bizarre lapse in the writing quality...
...but the character development continues to be good. This time it was Sayu. First we learn that his father, like Yeogu, “was kicked out of the palace in his younger days and had to sell salt.” Then he shows some empathy for Yeohwa because he confesses to missing his own mother. If the story is going to be so heavily fictional then we need good characters to keep things interesting. This has been a strong point so far, fortunately.
Hey the cross-dresser cleans up real nice!
It was so strange to see Yeohwa being so meek and submissive. But in that situation she really didn’t have much of a choice.
So the new king names the crown prince head of the education ministry? Yeah because the prince is such a calm, level-headed intellect. Sheesh! What was Gye thinking? Okay he wants to give the prince a nothing job, but he should still want to put him in a job that won’t likely be a disaster.
“It is a beautiful custom of our ancestors. I will follow that custom.” Is the new king really doing this out of his feelings for Queen Hae or does he have some other motive we can’t discern yet? Because if it’s his feelings then it seems like a huge blind spot that could get him in a lot of trouble. And it’s trouble with his own family.
“Wiryegung is the victor right now. A victor wants to be high in spirit and show off arrogance. You have to be patient. Your day will come.” Great that Queen Hae is still so involved in the story—and her character is getting more interesting now with the situation that she’s finding herself in.
Overall this wasn’t a bad episode but it was very transitional and it’s still too early to know whether or not the new setting and characters are going to be successful.
