The story has been developing well and that continued in this one. Interesting situations and relationships, some good characters; the acting has been good also. A few problems here and there but they were ignorable for the most part.
This time it was the first seven minutes that were pointless. I guess that’s better than the eight minutes last time. This kind of hyping recap, it’s episode 7 now so maybe they should let it go. Whoever is gonna watch is watching.
So the king has a secret crying place? And who lit all those torches? Blecch.
The king made that reference to “the 54 states of the Mahan confederacy down south” threatening Baekje. Here’s some more information about that:
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mahan_confederacy
...and then his reference to “Chogo the great”, well he was the fifth Baekje king and apparently one of the more active ones as far as military action:
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chogo_of_Baekje
Now look, if you’re going to fake like you’re playing a recorder, at least blow into the thing! Don’t just sit there and move your fingers. That was weak.
And another thing that was weak was the queen breaking that pot in anger. Obviously they wrote that into the scene, told her to do it to start the scene with a bang, but it didn’t fit with the scene or with the queen’s character. She’s not like that.
“When her highness gave birth to him, people heralded Yeogu as the living embodiment of the sacred Natu, that he should be proclaimed crown prince.” Apparently another reference to the conception dream we’ve been hearing about. Hope we get the whole story spelled out soon because it obviously is a big deal.
Here’s the narrated text:
“Would he agree to serve me as his ruler?” Wow, there’s the first indication that Yeogu had given any thought to actually trying to get the throne. Didn’t expect that just yet. And now listen to the king talking, sounds like it’s a done deal. Well you can hardly blame the king after Yeochan blundered himself into a losing battle and then wasted 4,000 Baekje soldiers’ lives getting himself caught and having to forsake Gomori fortress for ransom. Idiot.
Okay so the queen and BJ are talking, out in that wooded area...and then we cut away from them briefly...and then go back to them, still talking, but it’s suddenly changed from day to night. Ouch. Come on, producers, you can’t do boneheaded stuff like that.
The outdoor location shots in this episode were absolutely gorgeous. Especially the marital delegation leaving on those ships, just beautiful. Don’t like this business about standing people like arranged statues on boats Emperor-of-the-Sea style but I guess they were just first leaving port so it’s not so bad.
One good thing by now is that we’re getting more familiar with the characters and haven’t been hit with a lot of new ones. That first episode was a lot to take in, but we’ve only had six new characters since then and one of those was just in a brief flashback. Which is good, of course...but hopefully they’ll expand the setting at some point and give us more of a taste of what’s going on in the country more generally.

Here’s the narrated text:
The marriage between King Biryu and Queen Hae was the epitome of political subterfuges. Queen Hae was betrothed to Buyeo Jun, but by having her join Biryu in marriage, Lord Heukgang managed to help Biryu to the throne, and at the same time weaken the Hae’s influence. But Queen Hae ends up conspiring with Biryu’s fiercest rival Buyeo Jun, joining forces with him to help her son Buyeo Chan to the throne.I’m surprised the queen thinks BJ would have any interest whatsoever in helping Yeochan become king. Yeah okay she’s trying to help her Hae clan survive, understandable, but does she really think BJ won’t try to take advantage of the situation? Or is she already thinking ahead on that and hasn’t let it show yet? Hmmm....
