Well there's 65 minutes of my life that I can't get back. Not sure if I'd say this was the worst episode, but it sure was the dumbest and most pointless.
For a lot of this episode we sat there completely confused about why KJ was running away with Songi in broad daylight. He knew he wasn't even supposed to be hanging around her and he does this? Then he finally explains that he came out all this way because "I wanted the opportunity to tell you that I must remain unattached." Huh?!? He couldn't do that back home? Like the previous evening when they were talking? And it's not like he hasn't told her already before. The whole thing made no sense at all.
And Songi: "Your life is in danger at the Guard Corps." Oh yeah? Whose fault is that? And she really thinks she's going to get KJ on a boat with her? And then still thinks so after telling him she might have been able to save Wola's life? She's lucky KJ didn't toss her right off that walkway. And she sure didn't show any evidence of being a "clever girl" in this one like daddy says she is. Parading around in a bright red dress, knowing that eventually people would come looking for her? She needed to wear slave clothes and hide in a crate. Oh and not even checking ahead of time to see if there were any boats leaving that day, how's that for smarts. I still do feel sorry for her for being forced to marry someone she has no feelings for, but at this point I just want her to shut up and go away.
Choe U told General Park in the previous episode to send KJ to the frontier. Park didn't do it; instead he sent KJ to work for Kim Yakson. But in this episode, when Choe found out KJ was with Songi, he showed no surprise that KJ was still around and didn't confront Park about it. Shouldn't he have gone ballistic? Continuity error. Makes you wonder if two different people wrote the two episodes. That would explain plenty.
Okay, two things I did like. One was Mrs. Choe spilling it all out to Songi: "Why did Chunsim have to die? Wasn't it because of you? Didn't she say she did it for you? And Wola, why did she die? Doesn't that involve you as well? Now you'll let innocent Kim Jun die? Well? Say something." I only wish she'd been yelling and angry when she said it, instead of grabbing at her heart like she seems to do every five minutes lately. But hooray for her for talking sense.
Oh and the abbot's big hat, what a great hat! Can we buy those someplace?
"You are obligated to see us safely across the border." The guy has a point. The Koryo government knows that the border area is dangerous so they should have escorted the envoy through it. Yeah the guy was a jerk and they had good reason to hate him, but they needed to avoid anything happening like what ended up happening. Big miscalculation. This becomes an interesting historical point--obviously the Mongols were looking for any excuse to invade but Koryo handed one to them on a platter.
One thing that seems to have been forgotten is Kim Yakson and his brother, earlier in the series, saying they didn't want to marry their way into high politics. Don't remember if they specifically mentioned marriage but that was the gist of it. I've wondered about that a lot lately. Yakson has never shown any enthusiasm for marrying Songi, and then in this episode during that glimpse of the wedding night, he didn't look any happier than Songi did. I hope this isn't left behind as the story goes forward because if they're both unhappy then it makes for a very different situation than if only one of them is.
But enough about this episode. Let's just hope it was another temporary plunge and the rollercoaster heads back upwards with KJ going to the border.
