Oh dear, I have to do a lot of complaining about this one.
Master Yi's death, actually the scene was very effective. Quiet and intense. But why didn't JB capture him and bring him to justice instead? All of that trouble was stirred up before because he caught him but didn't turn him in. Now he gets a second chance; why not do it? Because he wanted to make YM angrier? That's a dumb reason. And worse than that, why didn't he seize the pirate ship? What a valuable asset and you just leave it there for them? Geez, at least set fire to it or something. The whole thing just didn't make sense.
The funeral scene was good too; visually very striking on that outcropping. But the rocked-up music was really bad, just completely the wrong choice and it hurt the scene.
Several continuity problems:
--We see JB and his officers kill the pirates on the shoreline...but then suddenly they're hopping onto the ship, apparently without being spotted from on the ship. How did they get to the ship? There was no visible way to do it.
--Later we saw YM and Master Jang do the same thing. It sounds like a small thing but in sequence it felt all wrong.
--Joong-dal ran away from YM and went right to Madam Jami and told her that Yi was dead. He had absolutely no way of knowing that. None.
--In one scene the Palmi pirate leader surrenders to JB, and in the very next scene he's been captured by YM's pirates and is killed. What the heck? How did that happen?
And several annoying questions:
--Why is the regent walking around virtually alone in Chunghae? Especially after an attempt was made to kill him.
--How could Madam Jami's troops have "more power than government troops," as we're told in this episode, if there are "more than a hundred" of them? As in, less than two hundred? This is a recurring problem, the lack of evidence that these enemies are major threats.
--This business about taking in the surrendered pirates and putting them to work...would that really have been done? Keeping them so close to the anti-pirate operation? No way. They'd have been taken to a labor camp and been closely monitored. You can't just trust them immediately...and now we're seeing JB burned by trusting them.
Okay, that's all...sorry if those seem petty but those kinds of things bug me and they make the plot less believable. Some of this has gone on throughout the series but for whatever reason this episode was especially flawed.
"You can't cover your incompetence with integrity." What an interesting line! Not sure what to think of this Kim Yang person yet but quite a first impression. On the other hand, making Madam Jami wait outside for hours and then sending her away, not cool. I don't care what kind of a point you're trying to make, you don't treat anybody that rudely. Ever.
"I do not wish to keep him near me." Sorry regent but you got that wrong--keep your friends close and your enemies closer. You're not sure if he's your enemy but there's no harm in being polite to the guy even if it's just so you stay on his good side.
The two best things in this episode: It was really nice that they found jobs for all of the fisherman. Very high-class by JB, and it tied up that story item from before. And then another nice, sweet simple scene with Yon and Ha-jin.
Yi's death really weighed heavily over this episode. Strangely, more than Master Sul's death did. when he died. There's almost a sense of emptiness, like will there really be fifteen more episodes worth of material? Especially now that YM seems to be a full-out pirate with no conscience now. Yi was such an interesting character; can YM really fill his shoes? I don't particularly miss Sul but it will be strange without Yi.
p.s. Hey, head in a basket!
