This episode was a little better than the previous few. Some of the same faults and problems but also some good things.
One thing that's working in the series is the rich daughter's situation. They're honest emotions she's going through, having to sit and watch the whole JB/Jung-hwa thing, and they make her a good character. I mean, we've certainly suffered enough from it so we can feel her pain!
"I'll earn power instead of money." Yeah Master Jo could be very, very good at that.
Gee, Joong-dal showed some spine in this one. For the wrong cause, but still, give him credit for not talking. He's still really annoying but at least he earned some respect.
Oh come on now, how did those pirate ships get so close to the coastline--and light up fire arrows--without anybody on land seeing them? That was utterly ridiculous. And why is Jung-hwa standing there in the middle of it all, looking so shocked that YM is in on the pirate attack? Why is she surprised? That was stupid. For that matter, she shouldn't be anywhere near there in the middle of a pirate attack; that was stupid too.
But give big credit to that officer who decided to let Sul's group have their weapons back. Seriously--that kind of independent thinking in a tough spot, didn't it make you want to see more of him? That's the kind of character you want to see more of.
Okay, so Sul's group lost about a hundred men. How many did the pirates lose? It wasn't a one-sided fight we were seeing. The pirates were celebrating like it was a bloodless coup but clearly it wasn't.
The ending was a surprise. The idea that JB not talking under torture convinced everyone that there was no collusion and saved the regent, that was a big stretch and didn't work. No way. But we know the king thinks highly of the regent, so you can accept the idea that once he heard the regent's explanation for everything, he'd accept it and drop the whole thing. (Which really makes Madam Jami look naive for thinking she could frame the regent...but whatever....)
And the king, good first impression of him. One problem up to this point is that we've seen nothing to support the idea of Yi's pirates being strong enough to threaten the country. But the way the king addressed it and said so, it seemed credible.
Amazing how JB looks completely back to normal right after being tortured so brutally. Gotta love TV!
Bottom line is, now we have the king and the government involved, so hopefully the story will become more meaningful and move forward onto bigger things. It needs to.
