This is a list of all of the named characters appearing in the series so far. The number in parentheses is the episode number of the character's debut. NOTE: This roster is LOADED with spoilers, so don't look at it if you're watching the series and don't want to know any spoilers.
Goong-bok / Jang Bogo (1) - First seen as a young teenage boy. Sentenced in Ep2 to exile on a deserted island (to starve to death) for allegedly colluding with pirates; sentence was commuted and he and his brother were sent to work as slaves on a horse farm. Liberated from slave status by Master Jo in Ep11 and given employment by Sul-pyung as security lieutenant. Demoted to common-laborer status in Ep14. Promoted to ship captain in Ep15. In Ep16 Sul appoints him captain of security officers and gives him the new name Jang Bogo. Appointed Junior Commander in the Tang army in Ep23 to help fight the Yi Sa-do rebellion. Turns down an offer of the Commander position in Ep25 and returns to work for Sul. In Ep35 Shilla's king gives him authority over anti-pirate operations. In Ep38 the king appoints him Consul of Chunghae military base with authority to draft 10,000 soldiers. This give him effective control over the Chunghae region and removes it from the Mujinju governor's authority. Also in Ep38 he takes in and later decides to adopt Eu-young, an orphaned girl he meets in Yangzhou. Marries Chae-ryung in Ep40. In Ep49 the king (Sinmu) names him First Meritorious Subject and Military Envoy (the latter, we're told, is comparable to Minister of Military; probably the king gave him the alternate title because of his slave background). Chae-ryung gives birth to his son in Ep49. Assassinated by YM in Ep51.
Jung Yon (1) - First seen as a young teenage boy; Goonk-bok's close friend. Sentenced in Ep2 to exile on a deserted island (to starve to death) for allegedly colluding with pirates; sentence was commuted and he and his brother were sent to work as slaves on a horse farm. Liberated from slave status by Master Jo in Ep11 and given employment by Sul-pyung as security lieutenant. Demoted to common-laborer status in Ep14. Promoted to ship security officer in Ep15. In Ep24 we learn that his parents died "early." Appointed to a high officer position in the Tang army in Ep23 to help fight the Yi Sa-do rebellion. Accepts a permanent post in the Tang army after Yi Sa-do's capture. Quits the army in Ep27 because of anti-Shillan discrimination and returns to work for Sul. Marries Ha-jin in Ep39. Named division chief of the Chunghae military division (second in command to Choi Moo-chang) by JB in Ep39. Dies in Ep51 fighting in defense of Chunghae against government troops.
Joong-dal (1) - Young man. Junior foreman of the Chunghae shipyard. Son of the foreman. Later works for Yeom Moon in Yo Do-hyung's organization. Demoted to common-laborer status in Ep14. Promoted to ship maintenance foreman in Ep15. Reinstated to trader in Ep16. Eventually leaves the pirate organization to go work for Madam Jami; in Ep38 we learn he has the title of Chief Merchant. As of Ep47 he's the head merchant for Madam Jami's entire trading group (not sure if that's the same thing as having the Chief Merchant title; Joong-dal talked like it was a promotion).
Soon-jong (1) - Younger teenage boy. Friend of Goong-bok and Yon. Worked for his father Haksoo. Promoted to chief by Madam Jami in Ep18. In Ep26 we learn that he married Da-bok and they're expecting a child. In Ep35 he and his father leave Madam Jami's employ to go home to Chunghae and work for Jung-hwa. In Ep39 we learn that he has two children now.
Haksoo (1) - Goong-bok's father. Shipyard worker in Chunghae. Killed by a military patrol in Ep2 while trying to flee from Chunghae. In Ep40 Mak-bong is speaking to JB; mentions JB's father but calls him Du-kwan for some unexplained reason.
Joong-dal's father (1) - Shipyard foreman. Executed in Ep3 for providing ship repair services to pirates.
Mak-bong (1, identified 4) - Soon-jong's father. First seen as a local government official in Chunghae. Later a purchasing officer at Mujinju base. As of Ep4 is running a dry-goods business in Mujinju. Later went to China with Madam Jami's trading group and became a shop chief. In Ep35 he and his son leave Madam Jami's employ to go home to Chunghae and work for Jung-hwa. In Ep40 we learn that he has the title of head chief.
Sul-pyung (1) - Powerful Shillan merchant in Yangzhou. Dies in Ep33 from an arrow shot in his back by Joong-dal (on Chief Jang's order) in Ep32.
Goong-bok's mother (1) - Seen only in flashback; she was taken away forcibly during a pirate raid. In Ep2 Goong-bok says she was killed, although we never see any such thing (and it's not clear how he would know that).
Kim Chang-gyum (1, identified 4) - Son of governor of Chunghae. In Ep4 he's a lieutenant in the Sajakeum Division of the military. Becomes governor of Mujinju in Ep25 with Madam Jami's assistance. Stripped of his position in Ep36 and replaced by Kim Yang. Later arrives at Chunghae and ends up working for JB. In Ep49 he's given an official position in the government in the capital. Killed by Baek-kyung and Tae-chun in Ep50 just after the royal physician confesses to him that he poisoned the king because YM forced him to.
Lady Kim Jung-hwa (1) - Daughter of governor of Chunghae. Later works for Madam Jami. After being taken captive in China in Ep25 and sold into slavery, she later meets the regent Kim Woo-jing who helps her, and she ends up running her own trading group and competing with Madam Jami. In Ep50 after King Minae's death she briefly acts as the boy-king's (King Munseong's) advisor.
Yi Do-hyung (1, identified 4) - First seen as a pirate leader, invading Chunghae. As of Ep4 he's running a trading business out of Yangzhou, China. Flees Yangzhou in Ep18 with some of his men as a criminal investigation zeroes in on him. Later returns to piracy in Shilla. Executed by JB in Ep36 for piracy.
Yeom Moon, later Yeom Jang (1, identified 2) - Swordsman first seen traveling with Yi Do-hyung. In Ep4 Yi appoints him commander of a commercial mission to Mujinju. Yi appoints him head chief in Ep16. Later commands some of Yi Sa-do's rebel forces. Eventually ends up as second in command of Yi's pirate operation. In Ep38 is captured by JB's forces; he's branded with the mark "thief" and sent into slavery. In Ep39 Kim Yang renames him Yeom Jang. In Ep47 JB names him a major general in the Pyong Dong army that he forms to support Kim Woo-jing's claim to the throne. In Ep49 we see him as captain of the royal guards, serving the king in the capital. Dies in Ep51 fighting against government troops in Chunghae.
Chief Jang (1, identified 24) - Senior subordinate of Yi Do-hyung. Captured along with YM in Ep38. Later given a position by Kim Yang (apparently).
Chunghae governor (2) - Killed during pirate attack in Ep2, by knife thrown by Yeom Moon.
Chunghae commander (3) - Assumed authority after pirate attack and death of governor.
Madam Jami (3) - Powerful local merchant; runs finishing school for girls. In Ep23 we learn she's a descendant of Jingol nobles. Arrested and imprisoned in Yangzhou in Ep24 for colluding with rebels; subsequently she was released and her death sentence reduced to deportation in exchange for financing 30,000 Shillan reinforcements for the Tang war effort.
Hyang (3) - Attendant of Madam Jami's.
Choi Moo-chang (3, identified 4) First seen as a blacksmith at the horse farm where Goong-bok and Yon were sent. Martial arts expert. In Ep4 we learn he was a military captain and was accused of treason. Hired by the governor of Mujinju in Ep4 to investigate illegal activities of government workers. Later sent to Tang as a slave with Goong-bok and Yon; returns in Ep11 as "Won-so", a champion gladiator from Julkang Province. Hired to work for Master Jo in Ep11. Appointed to a high officer position in the Tang army in Ep23 to help fight the Yi Sa-do rebellion. Leaves his position after Yi Sa-do's capture, and ends up working for JB and/or Master Jo (not entirely clear who's paying his salary). Named commander of the Chunghae military division by JB in Ep39. Dies in Ep51 fighting in defense of Chunghae against government troops.
Da-bok (4) - Woman hired by Mak-bong's son Soon-jong to work in their business. In Ep26 we learn that he married Soon-jong and they're expecting a child. In Ep39 we learn that Soon-jong has two children now; presumably they're both hers.
Governor of Mujinju (4) - Falsely accused of treason and removed from office in a plot orchestrated by Madam Jami in Ep7.
Assistant Governor (?) of Muninju (4?) - Becomes Governor in Ep7 after conspiring with Madam Jami against the sitting governor.
Chief Han (4) - One of Yi Do-Hyung's head subordinates.
Gook-joo (4) - One of the little girls being educated in Madam Jami's school.
Ho-young (4) - Teenage attendant at Madam Jami's school.
Bu-young (4) - Teenage attendant at Madam Jami's school.
Neung-chang (4, identified 7) - Head of Madam Jami's private army. In Ep45 Madam Jami tells him she wants to appoint him captain of the royal guards. In Ep46 we see that he has the position. Suffers fatal wounds from JB and his men at the end of Ep48 while trying to protect Madam Jami.
Hwa-sun (5) - Female escort working for Madam Jami.
So-hee (5) - Female escort working for Madam Jami.
inspector general (5) - National government official. Killed by an assassin (specifically, Yeom Moon) at Madam Jami's compound in Ep6.
Park Young-moo (5) - Lord of Naju Fortress.
Kim Do-soo (5) - Military commander, Midari Division.
Tae-bong (identified 6, seen earlier) - Subordinate officer in Madam Jami's army. In Ep45 Madam Jami says she intends to appoint him as a lieutenant in the royal guards. In Ep46 we see that he has the position. In Ep47 he's given command over an imperial army division.
Myung-chun (identified 6, seen earlier) - Subordinate officer in Madam Jami's army. In Ep45 Madam Jami says she intends to appoint him as a lieutenant in the royal guards. In Ep46 we see that he has the position. In Ep47 he's given command over an imperial army division.
Chun-tae (7) - Subordinate officer serving Yi Do-hyung. Captained the slave ship in Ep7. Later works as Joong-dal's assistant.
Lady Chae-ryung (7) - Daughter of Sul-pyung. Named head of the public affairs division of Chunghae by JB in Ep39; responsible for the welfare of the people. Marries JB in Ep40. Becomes pregnant in Ep45. Gives birth to a son in Ep49. Killed by government troops invading Chunghae in Ep51.

Ryu-sa (8) - Fellow slave/prisoner at Chinese fortress where Joong-bok and Yon were taken.

Jo Jang-gil / Master Jo (9) - Chinese merchant/trader based in Hedong or Shandong (or maybe both). Named head of the civil affairs division of Chunghae by JB in Ep39; responsible for overseeing all trading activities. In Ep49 he's given an official position in the government in the capital.
Du-man (9) - Martial arts instructor; works for Master Jo.
Chief Ko (9) - Business subordinate of Sul-pyung. Killed I Ep9 by a bandit attack led by Yeom Moon while leading a trade mission to Hedong.
Master Wang (10) - Competitor of Master Jo's.
Jie Du Shi (10) - Regional military governor of Yangzhou (this is a title, not a proper name).
Yu-pyo (10) Yangzhou warrior slave. Killed by Goong-bok in Ep10.
Jang Sung-pil (11) - Head of security for Sul-pyung. Later Goong-bok is placed in a higher position, over his. Punished in Ep19 for aiding in the sabotage of Sul's trade mission to Tibet...but is still allowed to keep his position and his title of Lieutenant. Dies in Ep51 fighting against government troops in Chunghae.
So-hong (11) - Woman who works for Yeom Moon, apparently as a servant/call girl of some sort.
Wang Ju-pyong (12) - Tang officer stationed at Gangso Fortress.
Yu-kang (13) - Yangzhou-area resident; expert on treating poison.
Master Chun (13) - Trader based in Chuzhou. Seen in Ep38 as part of the Yangzhou merchant group; he's exposed for running a slave trade and is expelled from the trading group.
Master Heum (13) - Trader based in Yangzhou.
Master Wang (13) - Unspecified relative of the Jie Du Shi.
Minister of Justice (13) - Tang government official.
local Yuzhou physician (14) - Treated the local Jie Du Shi, unsuccessfully; was in jail awaiting execution upon the Jie Du Shi's death.
Chief of Chunghwa Group (16) - in Shanxi Province.
Chun Sang-gui (16) - Eunuch who serves Lady Chabi (who was identified in Ep18 as a lady of the imperial court).
Master Jang (17) - Local trader allied with Sul's group, who switches to Yi's group in Ep17.
Ha-jin (identified 17, debuted much earlier (9 or 11 I think)) - Female security officer in Sul's group. Sul took her in as a child slave from Shilla. In Ep27 we learn she was sold as a slave by pirates; it's implied that the pirates killed her parents. Marries Jung Yon in Ep39. In Ep40 we learn she's pregnant. Killed in Ep40 by Baek-ryung and another one of YM's associates, at YM's order.
Chief Byun (identified 17, debuted much earlier) - Subordinate of Sul's. Killed by border patrol along with others in his trading mission to Tibet in Ep16.
Wang Chang-ha (18) - Minister of Jiangsu province government; put in charge of investigating the Tibet border massacre of Sul's trading group.
Yi Sa-do (19) - Leader of a rebellion against the Tang government. Captured in Ep25 as his rebellion is defeated; transported to prison and presumably executed later.
Mu Won-hyung (19) - Prime minister of Tang. Assassinated by Yeom Moon in Ep20.
Wang Ji-heung (21) - Chinese army officer, commanding the Wu Ning Jun army.
Captain Kim (24) - Tang navy officer serving as Fleet Minister in Jiangsu Province. Accepts a bribe in Ep24 from Madam Jami for the use of a military ship to take her home to Shilla.
Kwak Do-chool (27) - Shillan pirate leader. Captured by Master Yi's raid in Ep26 and executed by Yeom Moon (upon Yi's order) for refusing to serve under Yi's command.
Kim Woo-jing (27) - Lord, former regent, grandson of King Wonsung and a relative of King Heungduk by marriage. Son of Kim Kyun-jung, who becomes chancellor just before Ep42. In Ep41 Kim Myung replaces him as regent. Becomes king in Ep49 (King Sinmu). Dies from poison in Ep49.
Moo-jin (27, named 33) - Bodyguard/assistant/possibly security officer for Jung-hwa. Killed by Baek-kyung and Tae-chun in Ep50 while trying to deliver a letter from Jung-hwa to JB.
Han Man-jung (mentioned 27, first seen 28) - The #2 person in Jung-hwa's trading group.
Chunghae magistrate (28) - Name not given (yet). Received JB's team upon their landing at Chunghae.
Kook-hee (29) One of the little orphan girls learning Chinese at Jung-hwa's merchant headquarters.
Moo-chung (29) - Told Jung-hwa she was a female merchant from Shandong Province in China, but actually she works for Yeom Moon.
Man-chool (29) - Leader of the Yumcha pirate gang.
Minister of Military (29) - Madam Jami told him he had saved her life previously, in Yangzhou (did I overlook him here?).
Baek-kyung (29, named 37) - Pirate who becomes YM's close subordinate. Captured along with YM in Ep38. Dies in Ep51 with YM, fighting against government troops in Chunghae.
Kim Myung-hwan (32) - Vice-minister of Taxation.
Lord Kim Myung-chun (34) - Relative of the Inspector General; high-ranking government official.
King of Shilla (34) - Name not given but it's King Heondeok, 41st king. Dies in Ep43.
Kim Yang (36) - New governor of Mujinju. Sponsored by Lord Dangje (Kim Hyun-jung), the regent's father. Grandson of of Kim Heong-chang who led an unsuccessful uprising against the Shilla government and who was killed by Kim Myung's father Kim Choong-gong (the present chancellor and the king's brother). In Ep51 he's fully in command of the military, although we're not made aware of any formal military appointment.
Pil-ryul (36)- Leader of the Palmi pirates. Surrendered to JB with his men. Captured and killed by YM and his pirates in Ep36.
Kim Yang-soon (37) - Vice-commander of Mujinju military base.
Sang-chun (37) - Leader of Jangil Island pirates. Tries to kill YM and is executed in Ep37.
Eu-young (38) - Girl nearly sold into slavery in Yangzhou but taken in by JB's merchant group. Later in Ep38 we learn JB has adopted her. In Ep49 the king sends an offer of marriage, for her to become the second consort of his son the crown prince (future King Munseong).
Master Hwang (39) - Biggest merchant in the Chang'an region; supplies the Tang imperial household. Arrived in Chunghae in Ep39 to trade with JB; formerly traded with Madam Jami to provide silk to the Shilla imperial household.
Kim Kyung-chul (39) - Head chief trader from Hangju.
Park Suk-jung (39) - Head chief trader from Naju.
Kim Sung-hoon (41) - One of a group of young scholars or wanna-be-officials seen meeting Kim Woo-jing in Ep41. From Hanju; son of Lord Kim Byung-hoon, former vice minister of military.
Yi So-hang (41) - Kim Myung's political tactician. Murdered in Ep41 by YJ and his men.
Kim Myung (41) - The son of chancellor Kim Choong-gong (who apparently is the king's brother, making Kim Myung the king's nephew). In Ep41 he becomes the new regent after the chancellor dies, replacing Kim Woo-jing. Nearly assassinated by YM in Ep42 but later recovers and returns to health. Becomes king (King Minae) in Ep43 after arranging for the murder of the existing king (King Huigang). Killed by Kim Yang in Ep48 as he attempts to flee the capital.

Yeom Moon, later Yeom Jang (1, identified 2) - Swordsman first seen traveling with Yi Do-hyung. In Ep4 Yi appoints him commander of a commercial mission to Mujinju. Yi appoints him head chief in Ep16. Later commands some of Yi Sa-do's rebel forces. Eventually ends up as second in command of Yi's pirate operation. In Ep38 is captured by JB's forces; he's branded with the mark "thief" and sent into slavery. In Ep39 Kim Yang renames him Yeom Jang. In Ep47 JB names him a major general in the Pyong Dong army that he forms to support Kim Woo-jing's claim to the throne. In Ep49 we see him as captain of the royal guards, serving the king in the capital. Dies in Ep51 fighting against government troops in Chunghae.
Chief Jang (1, identified 24) - Senior subordinate of Yi Do-hyung. Captured along with YM in Ep38. Later given a position by Kim Yang (apparently).
Chunghae governor (2) - Killed during pirate attack in Ep2, by knife thrown by Yeom Moon.
Chunghae commander (3) - Assumed authority after pirate attack and death of governor.
Madam Jami (3) - Powerful local merchant; runs finishing school for girls. In Ep23 we learn she's a descendant of Jingol nobles. Arrested and imprisoned in Yangzhou in Ep24 for colluding with rebels; subsequently she was released and her death sentence reduced to deportation in exchange for financing 30,000 Shillan reinforcements for the Tang war effort.
Hyang (3) - Attendant of Madam Jami's.
Choi Moo-chang (3, identified 4) First seen as a blacksmith at the horse farm where Goong-bok and Yon were sent. Martial arts expert. In Ep4 we learn he was a military captain and was accused of treason. Hired by the governor of Mujinju in Ep4 to investigate illegal activities of government workers. Later sent to Tang as a slave with Goong-bok and Yon; returns in Ep11 as "Won-so", a champion gladiator from Julkang Province. Hired to work for Master Jo in Ep11. Appointed to a high officer position in the Tang army in Ep23 to help fight the Yi Sa-do rebellion. Leaves his position after Yi Sa-do's capture, and ends up working for JB and/or Master Jo (not entirely clear who's paying his salary). Named commander of the Chunghae military division by JB in Ep39. Dies in Ep51 fighting in defense of Chunghae against government troops.
Da-bok (4) - Woman hired by Mak-bong's son Soon-jong to work in their business. In Ep26 we learn that he married Soon-jong and they're expecting a child. In Ep39 we learn that Soon-jong has two children now; presumably they're both hers.
Governor of Mujinju (4) - Falsely accused of treason and removed from office in a plot orchestrated by Madam Jami in Ep7.
Assistant Governor (?) of Muninju (4?) - Becomes Governor in Ep7 after conspiring with Madam Jami against the sitting governor.
Chief Han (4) - One of Yi Do-Hyung's head subordinates.
Gook-joo (4) - One of the little girls being educated in Madam Jami's school.
Ho-young (4) - Teenage attendant at Madam Jami's school.
Bu-young (4) - Teenage attendant at Madam Jami's school.
Neung-chang (4, identified 7) - Head of Madam Jami's private army. In Ep45 Madam Jami tells him she wants to appoint him captain of the royal guards. In Ep46 we see that he has the position. Suffers fatal wounds from JB and his men at the end of Ep48 while trying to protect Madam Jami.
Hwa-sun (5) - Female escort working for Madam Jami.
So-hee (5) - Female escort working for Madam Jami.
inspector general (5) - National government official. Killed by an assassin (specifically, Yeom Moon) at Madam Jami's compound in Ep6.
Park Young-moo (5) - Lord of Naju Fortress.
Kim Do-soo (5) - Military commander, Midari Division.
Tae-bong (identified 6, seen earlier) - Subordinate officer in Madam Jami's army. In Ep45 Madam Jami says she intends to appoint him as a lieutenant in the royal guards. In Ep46 we see that he has the position. In Ep47 he's given command over an imperial army division.
Myung-chun (identified 6, seen earlier) - Subordinate officer in Madam Jami's army. In Ep45 Madam Jami says she intends to appoint him as a lieutenant in the royal guards. In Ep46 we see that he has the position. In Ep47 he's given command over an imperial army division.
Chun-tae (7) - Subordinate officer serving Yi Do-hyung. Captained the slave ship in Ep7. Later works as Joong-dal's assistant.
Lady Chae-ryung (7) - Daughter of Sul-pyung. Named head of the public affairs division of Chunghae by JB in Ep39; responsible for the welfare of the people. Marries JB in Ep40. Becomes pregnant in Ep45. Gives birth to a son in Ep49. Killed by government troops invading Chunghae in Ep51.
Wang Dae-pyung (8) - Foreman at worksite of Chinese frontier fortress.
Ryu-sa (8) - Fellow slave/prisoner at Chinese fortress where Joong-bok and Yon were taken.
Chief Yoo (8) - Business subordinate of Madam Jami.
Pan-sool (8) - Employee of Yi Do-hyung.
Chief Yang (9) - Business subordinate of Madam Jami.
Jo Jang-gil / Master Jo (9) - Chinese merchant/trader based in Hedong or Shandong (or maybe both). Named head of the civil affairs division of Chunghae by JB in Ep39; responsible for overseeing all trading activities. In Ep49 he's given an official position in the government in the capital.
Du-man (9) - Martial arts instructor; works for Master Jo.
Chief Ko (9) - Business subordinate of Sul-pyung. Killed I Ep9 by a bandit attack led by Yeom Moon while leading a trade mission to Hedong.
Master Wang (10) - Competitor of Master Jo's.
Jie Du Shi (10) - Regional military governor of Yangzhou (this is a title, not a proper name).
Yu-pyo (10) Yangzhou warrior slave. Killed by Goong-bok in Ep10.
Jang Sung-pil (11) - Head of security for Sul-pyung. Later Goong-bok is placed in a higher position, over his. Punished in Ep19 for aiding in the sabotage of Sul's trade mission to Tibet...but is still allowed to keep his position and his title of Lieutenant. Dies in Ep51 fighting against government troops in Chunghae.
So-hong (11) - Woman who works for Yeom Moon, apparently as a servant/call girl of some sort.
Wang Ju-pyong (12) - Tang officer stationed at Gangso Fortress.
Yu-kang (13) - Yangzhou-area resident; expert on treating poison.
Master Chun (13) - Trader based in Chuzhou. Seen in Ep38 as part of the Yangzhou merchant group; he's exposed for running a slave trade and is expelled from the trading group.
Master Heum (13) - Trader based in Yangzhou.
Master Wang (13) - Unspecified relative of the Jie Du Shi.
Minister of Justice (13) - Tang government official.
local Yuzhou physician (14) - Treated the local Jie Du Shi, unsuccessfully; was in jail awaiting execution upon the Jie Du Shi's death.
Chief of Chunghwa Group (16) - in Shanxi Province.
Chun Sang-gui (16) - Eunuch who serves Lady Chabi (who was identified in Ep18 as a lady of the imperial court).
Master Jang (17) - Local trader allied with Sul's group, who switches to Yi's group in Ep17.
Ha-jin (identified 17, debuted much earlier (9 or 11 I think)) - Female security officer in Sul's group. Sul took her in as a child slave from Shilla. In Ep27 we learn she was sold as a slave by pirates; it's implied that the pirates killed her parents. Marries Jung Yon in Ep39. In Ep40 we learn she's pregnant. Killed in Ep40 by Baek-ryung and another one of YM's associates, at YM's order.
Chief Byun (identified 17, debuted much earlier) - Subordinate of Sul's. Killed by border patrol along with others in his trading mission to Tibet in Ep16.
Wang Chang-ha (18) - Minister of Jiangsu province government; put in charge of investigating the Tibet border massacre of Sul's trading group.
Yi Sa-do (19) - Leader of a rebellion against the Tang government. Captured in Ep25 as his rebellion is defeated; transported to prison and presumably executed later.
Mu Won-hyung (19) - Prime minister of Tang. Assassinated by Yeom Moon in Ep20.
Wang Ji-heung (21) - Chinese army officer, commanding the Wu Ning Jun army.
Captain Kim (24) - Tang navy officer serving as Fleet Minister in Jiangsu Province. Accepts a bribe in Ep24 from Madam Jami for the use of a military ship to take her home to Shilla.
Kwak Do-chool (27) - Shillan pirate leader. Captured by Master Yi's raid in Ep26 and executed by Yeom Moon (upon Yi's order) for refusing to serve under Yi's command.
Kim Woo-jing (27) - Lord, former regent, grandson of King Wonsung and a relative of King Heungduk by marriage. Son of Kim Kyun-jung, who becomes chancellor just before Ep42. In Ep41 Kim Myung replaces him as regent. Becomes king in Ep49 (King Sinmu). Dies from poison in Ep49.
Moo-jin (27, named 33) - Bodyguard/assistant/possibly security officer for Jung-hwa. Killed by Baek-kyung and Tae-chun in Ep50 while trying to deliver a letter from Jung-hwa to JB.
Han Man-jung (mentioned 27, first seen 28) - The #2 person in Jung-hwa's trading group.
Chunghae magistrate (28) - Name not given (yet). Received JB's team upon their landing at Chunghae.
Kook-hee (29) One of the little orphan girls learning Chinese at Jung-hwa's merchant headquarters.
Moo-chung (29) - Told Jung-hwa she was a female merchant from Shandong Province in China, but actually she works for Yeom Moon.
Man-chool (29) - Leader of the Yumcha pirate gang.
Minister of Military (29) - Madam Jami told him he had saved her life previously, in Yangzhou (did I overlook him here?).
Baek-kyung (29, named 37) - Pirate who becomes YM's close subordinate. Captured along with YM in Ep38. Dies in Ep51 with YM, fighting against government troops in Chunghae.
Kim Myung-hwan (32) - Vice-minister of Taxation.
Lord Kim Myung-chun (34) - Relative of the Inspector General; high-ranking government official.
King of Shilla (34) - Name not given but it's King Heondeok, 41st king. Dies in Ep43.
Kim Yang (36) - New governor of Mujinju. Sponsored by Lord Dangje (Kim Hyun-jung), the regent's father. Grandson of of Kim Heong-chang who led an unsuccessful uprising against the Shilla government and who was killed by Kim Myung's father Kim Choong-gong (the present chancellor and the king's brother). In Ep51 he's fully in command of the military, although we're not made aware of any formal military appointment.
Pil-ryul (36)- Leader of the Palmi pirates. Surrendered to JB with his men. Captured and killed by YM and his pirates in Ep36.
Kim Yang-soon (37) - Vice-commander of Mujinju military base.
Sang-chun (37) - Leader of Jangil Island pirates. Tries to kill YM and is executed in Ep37.
Eu-young (38) - Girl nearly sold into slavery in Yangzhou but taken in by JB's merchant group. Later in Ep38 we learn JB has adopted her. In Ep49 the king sends an offer of marriage, for her to become the second consort of his son the crown prince (future King Munseong).
Master Hwang (39) - Biggest merchant in the Chang'an region; supplies the Tang imperial household. Arrived in Chunghae in Ep39 to trade with JB; formerly traded with Madam Jami to provide silk to the Shilla imperial household.
Kim Kyung-chul (39) - Head chief trader from Hangju.
Park Suk-jung (39) - Head chief trader from Naju.
Kim Sung-hoon (41) - One of a group of young scholars or wanna-be-officials seen meeting Kim Woo-jing in Ep41. From Hanju; son of Lord Kim Byung-hoon, former vice minister of military.
Yi So-hang (41) - Kim Myung's political tactician. Murdered in Ep41 by YJ and his men.
Kim Myung (41) - The son of chancellor Kim Choong-gong (who apparently is the king's brother, making Kim Myung the king's nephew). In Ep41 he becomes the new regent after the chancellor dies, replacing Kim Woo-jing. Nearly assassinated by YM in Ep42 but later recovers and returns to health. Becomes king (King Minae) in Ep43 after arranging for the murder of the existing king (King Huigang). Killed by Kim Yang in Ep48 as he attempts to flee the capital.
Yong-soo (42) - Employee of Jung-hwa's trading group; works under Mak-bong.
Kim Kyun-jung (42) - Chancellor. Father of Kim Woo-jing. Chosen King by the nobles in Ep43. Attacked by an assassin at the end of Ep43 and dies at the start of Ep44.
Kim Moo-hwan (43) - Captain of the imperial guards.
So-yang (43) - Attendant of Madam Jami.
Tae-chun (named 43, seen earlier, possibly first in Ep40) - Goon/subordinate of Yeom Jang and Kim Jang.
Kim Woo-jing's son (44) - Introduced without being named. We next see him in Ep50 as the boy-king Munseong, having ascended to the throne after his father's sudden passing.
Yong-soo (45) - Waiter at Jung-hwa's inn.
Chun Sang-gui (46) - Eunuch serving Tang Consort Chabi. Influential member of the palace. Native Shillan, a slave sent as part of a regular tribute to Tang by the Shillan government.
Kim Hyo-chan (47) - Captain in the Sajageum Division of the imperial army. Caught pilfering military supplies. Beheaded at Madam Jami's order in Ep47.
Lee Moon-bok (47) - Captain of the Manbo Division of the imperial army. Switches over to JB's side in the war in Ep47.
Yu Pil-ho (47) - Officer in the Sajageum Division of the imperial army. Switches over to JB's side in the war in Ep47.
Son of Jang Bogo and Chae-ryung (49) - Seen as an infant after Chae-ryung gives birth.
King Sinmu's royal physician (50) - Killed by Baek-kyung and Tae-chun in Ep50 just after confessing to Kim Chang-gyum that he poisoned the king because YM forced him to do so.
