I'll be wrapping up the Jang Youngsil board in a couple of weeks, since the series is ending in the US next weekend. After that, there apparently is going to be a long break before the next historical (Jeong Yak Yong) airs, possibly lasting into 2017. So I was thinking of watching Emperor of the Sea on DramaFever until then.
EOS lasts 51 episodes, so it would mostly be one episode per week, occasionally two. Not sure if anybody else is interested but if I go ahead myself, I'll run a character roster and episode threads as I go along. This is still in the maybe-yes-maybe-no category but I figured I'd at least mention it now.

I'm willing to try it if it's not too violent, Ajk.

Lots of swordfighting and cutting people down, but I'm used to seeing this stuff, so it doesn't faze me.

I'm willing to try it if it's not too violent, Ajk. It's like 10 times less violent than Signal.

Okay, great then! If you two are interested I'll plan on starting it. Will be nice to have the company; I think our historical regulars here have already seen it.
The only issue is sometimes we'd have to do two episodes a week, just because we'd need to finish it before Jeong Yak Yong gets started. But I don't think it will be a problem.
jewel from what truth has said about it being a fusion drama with a love triangle, whatever violence in it probably won't be as graphic as something like Jingbirok, which was more of a true-to-life historical. And if it's milder than a contemporary show you've watched, that's a good sign too. If it gets to be a problem then you can wait until I watch episodes and I can warn you about anything that might bother you...but it sounds like it should be okay.

Sounds good, looking forward to it. Just be warned though - I don't really like the main guy much (saw him in Kimchi Family a long time ago and was not too impressed) so I may not be able to stick to it till the end... hope the storyline is good.

Song Il-Gook is not the main guy in this drama. He plays a semi-villain character who is part of a love triangle. The main character is played by Choi Soo-Jong, who played the main character in KBS Dae Jo Young.

Oh really? Maybe I'll like this guy better! Never heard of him though. He's known for playing the main character in a KBS historical every 3 years or so. So far he pretty much played a person from almost all Korean dynasties. Characters he played in chronological timeline order of the characters. Kim Chunchu/King Taejong Muyeol(Shilla dynasty/Three Kingdoms era) - KBS King's Dream (2012) Dae Joyoung/King Go(Balhae dynasty/North-South Kingdoms era) - KBS Dae Joyoung (2006-2007) Jang Bogo(Shilla dynasty/North-South Kingdoms era) - KBS Emperor of the Sea (2004-2005)Wang Guhn/Emperor Taejo(Goryeo dynasty) - KBS Emperor Wang Guhn(2000-2001) Yi Soon Shin(Joseon dynasty) - KBS Imjin War 1592 : The War of Three Nations(2016, upcoming) Lee Jaema(Joseon dynasty) - KBS Lee Jaema(2002) I've watched all of these dramas except for Lee Jaema and Imjin War 1592, which have not aired yet. The downside might be that he's pretty old as he is currently 53 years old, but he was 41 and a lot younger looking in this drama. (TBF, he still doesn't look that old for his age. He looks like he could pass as 40 in my opinion.)

I have no problem with older men. Besides if he looks 40 at 53, he must've looked 30 easy at 41. Perfect!
(Wow, he must be a great actor to be continuously offered such great roles.)

I watched this a number of years ago, and I don't think it's any more violent than other historicals that feature battles and swordplay. It is certainly not as brutal as God of War was. It is worth watching.

I love this drama, it was one of the first Saguek's i really got into, i actually think its the kind of drama that you can watch over and over, its fast paced, no filler has a superb cast and a great soundtrack. Funny and i have no idea if this is true but KBS followed IYSS with Seoul 1945 (which i also liked ), however seems it was not very popular, so KBS came up with another nautical drama to keep the IYSS crowd happy.
