Okay, yet another chance for me to display my utter cluelessness...but I don't get it. What's so great about the guy? Keeping in mind I've never seen him before in a series. He's doing a decent job in this one, actually doing pretty well I think--not overacting it, and certainly better than the guy who played JYS in GKS (I didn't care for him at all). But it's nothing extraordinary. What's the big deal? You haven't watched Emperor of the Sea or Jumong? These two dramas pretty much made him a superstar in Asia.

Jumong is overrated. Whenever I told my Korean peers that, they would look at me funny. And they're girls.

I always planned to watch Jumong because the subject matter is so far back in history. Wanted to see how different it would look from the Koryo/Joseon historicals. You know, more primitive. Then I caught an episode and it looked pretty much like any other historical. Lost interest.
Never got to see EOS. Is it worth watching?

Then I caught an episode and it looked pretty much like any other historical. Lost interest. Never got to see EOS. Is it worth watching? Yeah, Jumong sucks. There's no history in it whatsoever as it's a typical MBC "historical." It was extremely popular in Korea and the rest of Asia though. I will never understand why. As for EOS, I would recommend it even though it's a fusion. It's a lot better than JYS despite its fusion aspect and has more history than JYS in it even though the drama is about 70% fictional(and JYS claims to be a "traditional" historical lol). One of your favorite villain, the guy who played Im Gyeonmi in JD, is in it as well. But I have to warn you that it does have all the same rags to riches going from slave to high ranking official/general cliche, not to mention the typical becoming a gladiator in China story. This is the one that started all the same old fusion "historical" story pattern though. I was okay with it when I watched EOS since it was the first one at the time, but all the other ones that came up later are just... arrrrrrrrrgh!

And now to present another point of view Keeping in mind that I watch these shows first for their entertainment value, and if I learn some real history, even better. I loved Jumong, even though it had some of the problems that plague most of the historical dramas. The earlier episodes were better than the later. I thought the show had some well-played really complex characters, and interesting story lines. Emperor of the Sea - Mixed emotions about this one. I thought the early episodes were really entertaining with a great villain. Later episodes not so gratsi. Usually the love interests are the weakest part of historicals (IMHO). Both of these shows feature strong women as well as total ditzes. Go figure.

“Jumong” was okay. I actually rather liked it in the beginning, but (and I agree with mugwump here) as it wore on, it really began to drag (one assumes that, due to the show’s popularity, the show’s writer was instructed to “just keep writing!” even though there wasn’t a whole lot left to write about). The battle scenes were sometimes unintentionally amusing. Battles that surely saw thousands (or even tens of thousands) of soldiers pitted against each other were invariably depicted as a dozen or so guys on each side fighting it out in the woods somewhere. As “Jumong” wore on, I kept watching, but I was often finding myself hollering at the TV screen saying things like “Hey, when is this thing going to end, anyway? ??” “Emperor of the Sea” was much better. Yeah, it was one of the original “fusion” dramas (which I generally don’t care for) but I loved the cast. We all got to enjoy a terrific display of acting talent in that show. The ending, though, was astonishingly abrupt: the final episode could easily have been stretched into two or even three episodes without suffering. I don’t know why they were in such a hurry to kill the series off. EOTS, by the way, also had some of the most memorable music I can recall in a Korean historical. There was music in that show that could truly bring a tear to the eye. So … if you miss out on “Jumong” it’s probably not too big deal, but I think “Emperor of the Sea” is worth watching if you get the chance.

Still can't believe that the writer of Jumong is the same writer who wrote KBS Jingbirok. Hello, why couldn't you write like that for Jumong? He should stick to his Jingbirok writing style in the future. No more Jumong and Gyebaek type of script, please! Back to this drama, there are just 3 more episodes to go now. Ahn Shinu(King Bojang in KBS King's Dream) has been cast as Choi Mali. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Choe_Manri

Thanks, guys, sure do appreciate your sharing your thoughts. Okay I will give EOS a try sometime. Maybe after JYS ends, depending on how long the break is before JYY starts.
And truth mentioning Jung Ho Keon, very persuasive!

And truth mentioning Jung Ho Keon, very persuasive! Plus, it's got the actor of Lee In Yim making a special appearance as well as the actor of Jingbirok's Lee Sanhae as a good guy. It was also directed by the director of Jeong Dojeon. The break before JYY is going to be very long. There are still no news about the casting nor the start date of the show. It is assumed that the show will start in October, but it might even get delayed until next year since KBS said that they would only do one traditional historical per year back in 2014 and they've already done one historical with JYS.

2017 would certainly make sense, considering how far away the thing has been pushed back already. Just so they do a good job with it, whenever it airs, that's the important thing.
Now I remember why I didn't watch EOS. I'm not a Choi Soo Jong fan, and EOS aired here in Chicago not long after DJY ended so it just wasn't appealing. Also it was running at the same time as GKS and I was spending a lot of time on the GKS board here, with those summaries.
But if JYY won't be coming until 2017 maybe we can do a group viewing on DramaFever and I can set up a board for it. We'll see. 51 episodes, that would work nicely at one or two a week.

I just saw it. It really shows that this is the writer's first show, and not a very strong beginning in my opinion. I also question his sense of morality.
