Excluding that this is a "slave rises to prominence" story (again, even if it is fact), we see a Goryeo restoration plot again (what is it with Korean historicals with plots about reviving dead dynasties?) and a likely forbidden romance between lowborn and royalty. Shouldn't the heart of the story be the friendship between the king and slave?
Any idea who the screenwriter is? Cause nothing's making me go enthusiastic.
Sejong looks a bit different from when he was in GKS. I think he's gotten wider.
Oh hey, Song Il-gook's back in historicals again!

The writer's name is Lee Myonghee and this is his/her first historical. I actually haven't watched Great King Sejong cuz I was tired of Joseon historicals at the time, so I'm actually looking forward to this one. It does have some fictional elements, but it still beats all other so-called "historicals" that are on right now.

Song Ilgook's triplet sons will apparently follow in their father's footsteps in acting.

The first episode got a 11% rating, which was the highest rating Jingbirok ever had. I'm assuming this is due to Song Il Guk's popularity. I have a feeling that ratings are gonna get even higher in the upcoming episodes.

Watched both Episode 1 and 2.
The focus of the drama is mostly on Jang Youngshil as the title suggests, which differentiates itself from GKS.
Positives
1. Good acting
2. No fantasy-like costumes. All costumes including armors are just the way they were in Jeong Dojeon. Episode 1 takes place just 2 years after the end of Jeong Dojeon, so that seems obvious.
3. King Gongmin and young King U met as father and son again, and you get to see some happy father and son moments that you couldn't see in Jeong Dojeon.
Negative : I'm sure this will change as the story progresses, but both Episode 1 and 2 were entirely fictional since there aren't much known about JYS's early life.
The drama feels like a Lee Byung Hun type rags to riches drama except JYS really did start out as a slave in his case.
Couple of other points to mention...
For the 1st time in history of Korean historicals, we have a female narrator in a historical. The narrator's name is Kim Sang Hyeon, who is most famous for her voice in the Korean dub version of the popular video game League of Legends.
Hwang Hee looks too old for his age. He was 38 in 1401, but he's being played by a 61 years old. Taejong is the same case as he was only 34 in 1401. I think Ahn Jaemo(Lee Bangwon in Jeong Dojeon) should've made a special appearance in this drama just for the early part.
This is not a type of historical I usually like. I prefer historicals like Jeong Dojeon and Jingbirok, but I have to say it's worth watching. I mean at least it's not completely fictional or pure fantasy like other historicals that are currently on air right now, especially the Six Flying Dragons(God I hate this drama). I have been craving for a historical drama ever since Jingbirok ended and this seems like the best option right now.

Thanks truth, appreciate the heads-up.
Just, anything else about episodes not yet aired in Chicago, spoiler thread please as usual.
Fortunately the Chicago KBS affiliate has their new website running now and we have a weekly schedule to look at, in English. Hooray!

www.gooddrama.net/korean-drama/jang-young-shil-episode-1Jang Young Shil's been subbed. Hooray! Unless these are the only episodes that get subbed. This just makes me even more angry though. WHy does it make me angry? Jingbirok and this drama gets an online sub, and yet Jeong Dojeon has only one episode with english text. Even worse is that Six Flying Dragons, which deals with a similar subject, is on dramafever, and the one every member of the lowest common denominator is focused on. I'm never going to live down the fact that I can't see Jeong Dojeon without subs until I see it with subs! I share truth's disdain for Six Flying Dragons.

Six Flying Dragons ...blech ...give me this one any week, day, month , year.
I guess we could treat this as a companion/spin off from GKS, given the cast.
