Rachel from NJ Dae Seung's father apparently died of illness (heart problems or something). The stress caused by pressure from the Chungs and his son's refusal to bow to them no doubt didn't help his health. In any case he collapsed and was bed bound after having given half his land away to the Chungs as a negotiation to get his son reinstated in the military. Dae Seung's father feared the Chungs greatly and on his deathbed he gets Dae Seung to swear that he won't engage in conflict with them. He also tells General Du Kyung Seung to look after and guide his son.
