That is not episode 1. Yun Dusu doesn't even show up until episode 2, and then it's only a visual, no dialogue. If you look at our forum's main page you can see which episodes aired most recently here in North America. Anything from later episodes I have no clue about. I think KBS world edited some scenes out, I'm watching the raws and using some chinese subs to understand, here's a video min 33

Lee Sanhae mocks Yun Dusu by saying Yun's too stubborn and this is why he can't work with "close-minded" Westerners.

Oh boy...yeah I was afraid this was going to happen. There have been series when KBS World has made cuts in the episodes to get them under 60 minutes (and make room for commercials). Looks like this will be one of them. So there are going to be things I won't see and won't include in the summaries. Apologies in advance but there's nothing I can do about it.

Seonjo : That's true. How can I call myself a king when I can't even choose the people I want to use? Yun Dusu : Your Greatness is immeasurable (Eunuch enters) Eunuch : Your Majesty, government officials(Easterners) are discussing whether to send an envoy to Japan or not. Seonjo : I already told them to stop discussing that. Are they trying to turn this country into a country of beasts? (Looks at Yun) As you can see, I'm pretty much powerless. (scene ends)

Yeah, see that's a pretty significant scene, with Yun Dusu being there right from the beginning. This could get very frustrating for the North American viewers. They did some cutting on Jeong Dojeon as well, but I didn't notice too many problems with that. Hope it doesn't become a problem here.
I wish these networks would stop making episodes that run 63-67 minutes. There's no reason they can't be 55 or whatever and fit into an hour time slot.

Hideyoshi was not a cackling baddie, paranoid and suspicious yes but very calculated, Kato despite being one of the "Seven Spears" was not in Hideyoshi's inner circle,he also would have never done anything like licking blood. I have not watched it though You Tube has some episodes up, but the cartoonish depiction of the Japanese is way off .

That term applies to Japanese depiction in IYSS.

Sorry truth another thing is Kato would never have killed the envoy,it would have been done by a commoner or peasant,Samurai were not allowed to soil themselves by carrying out an execution. Commoners like the Yamada family who became shogunal executioners were not allowed samurai rank despite being the Tokugawa Executioners.
Kato was actually very smart and a gifted strategist and Hideyoshi was one of those people who always kept people guessing by keeping his emotions in check.
Still its an improvement on any previous depictions of Japanese and gets way better after the first ep.

It's a scene between a guy named Yun Du Su (or Yoon Doo Soo) Seonjo asked him to comeback but he told him that he needs to take care of the smallpox in Pyongan. And then the eunuch enters and said something to Seonjo. The king was saying he was lonely and wished he (the man in front of him) would come back to the palace. The man says he still has to finish up the small pox problem. The king says he's lonely because he doesn't have anyone like him to nag at him like a mother-in-law. The man says he's sure there are many "mothers-in-law" nagging at him at his side. The king replies but none are affectionate mothers-in-law like him. The man says the king still needs to learn a lot and needs a beating for complaining. The king asks should he bare his calves so he could give him a beating. And then they both laugh. Hope this is the scene you're talking about...

For 200 years Ming had refused to recognize Joseon's legitimacy, recording in its laws that Lee Seonggye was Lee In Im's son and became king illegitimately by killing a reigning king. Joseon had tried repeatedly to get Ming to correct this misstatement, unsuccessfully...until Seonjo. I'm sorry for talking about episode 1 when you're way done with it but I just discovered that this drama was availble over at GoodDrama (thanks to Mugwump) and finished watching epi 1 just now. Don't know if I'll stick with it but was very interesting. Loved the beginning with all the war scenes - so cool! So can I ask you, how did Lee SeongGye become king? Didn't he kill the existing king to become king himself? How is the recording a misstatement?

Didn't he kill the existing king to become king himself? How is the recording a misstatement? There's a war scene in Episode 1? No dynasty wants to admit their wrongdoing in the foundation of their dynasty. Whatever they did is supposed to be a deed of justice, not illegitimate. According to Annals of Joseon Dynasty, Lee Seonggye became king after King Gong Yang politely conceded the throne to him. Lee Seonggye supposedly did not want to become a king, as shown on KBS Jeong Dojeon, but he eventually had "no choice" but to accept the concession when King Gong Yang kept asking him to be the new king. King Gong Yang is named "Gong Yang" for this reason, as he Gongson-hagae(politely) Yangbo(conceded) the throne to the "rightful" king Lee Seonggye. Although King Gong Yang was exiled and killed off shortly after being exiled, Lee Seonggye did not become a king illegitimately in the view of the Joseon dynasty. He was legitimately handed the throne by the former legitimate king, which makes him a legitimate king. And since Lee Seonggye did not kill King Gong Yang right on the spot with his hands, sat on the throne and said "I'm the king now," Lee Seonggye did not kill a reigning king to become the king.

That's quite all right, jewel...not an issue at all. Watch any or all of them as you wish, when you want to, and let us know what you think of them. LSG didn't just walk in and kill a sitting king (although you could argue he indirectly killed three of them). He was a successful general who eventually got control of the nation's military power. The nation was struggling so he forcibly replaced King Wu with Wu's son. But later he replaced the son with another royal family member, and soon afterwards had Wu and Chang put to death. (There was controversy in all this about royal bloodlines; VERY long story.) But that third king was just a puppet anyway and a few years later LSG removed him (and exiled him; he died in exile) and finally took the throne for himself. There's a Wikipedia entry for him that explains it all much better than I can: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Taejo_of_JoseonSo he didn't literally, exactly kill a sitting king...and the part about being Lee In Im's son, that was 100% wrong, so Joseon had a completely valid reason to argue that Ming's records needed changing. The previous historical drama that we followed here, Jeong Dojeon, was all about this period. That was an outstanding series; if you ever get the chance, do watch that one.
