The Chicago Korean Drama Fan Club staff has been discussing the future of the board recently. I think we can all agree that waiting for KBC to return to what it used to be is a lost cause at this point. However, that doesn't mean we're giving up. As a matter of fact, we're looking to the future and how we can make this board better than ever. We have a great community here and it would be a shame to lose the board due to inactivity. So, with that in mind, we plan on switching to the online service DramaFever. Instead of relying on a local TV station, we would base all dramas provided on the board to what's available on their website. Not only would this allow us to watch and discuss more dramas than ever, it would also allow board members who live outside of Chicago to be an even bigger part of our community. There are various services for watching K-Dramas online but we chose DramaFever because, in the opinion of the staff, it's our best option. DramaFever is a free and legal website with a large catalog of dramas. It offers a premium service but it's entirely optional. It's important that all members are able to watch the dramas for free in a legal manner. You won't be required to sign up for their premium service. The only thing we'll encourage you to do is to register an account with DramaFever. Account registration, of course, is free. So, you're probably wondering, how is this supposed to work exactly? The way you'll go about watching the dramas will be different but not much will change about the board itself. We'll put up boards for dramas currently airing. We'll operate on a schedule. There will be air dates for episodes. There will be a spoiler thread as well. Things on the board will be business as usual. The difference being you'll now be going to a website to watch K-Dramas. We know this will take some getting used to but we'll do our best to make the transition as smooth as possible for everyone. Once we're ready to implement these changes, we'll explain everything in further detail and provide a support thread. For now, we simply want to give you a general outline of what's to come. One of the biggest advantages to this change is that we, the viewers, will be deciding what we want to watch. What we, the staff, need from you is some feedback on the upcoming changes. What are your thoughts on it? How should we go about selecting which dramas to air? Would you prefer more modern or historical dramas? If you have any comments, suggestions or questions, please feel free to share them with us.

Staff can vote too, right? While I was a huge fan of 'Queen Seonduk and Yi San (to name a couple of recent viewings), find I watch more "Modern" dramas. Since there are a lot of dramas that take place in the 1970s and 80 these days, I would call a "Modern" drama one where they use telephones, even if they're not cellular.
I'm not quite sure how I would catagorize 'Commrades', though.

Perhaps it would be a good idea to watch at least one historical drama and one modern drama.

Well . . . my feeling is that, at any given time, there must be ten contemporary dramas for every historical drama being broadcast (maybe five, if you include "wobblers" like "Giant" or "Comrades"). I don't even know of any historicals being shown at the moment (at least, not on MBC or SBS - I'm not sure about what KBS is showing right now).
So, it might make sense to select at least several contemporaries, and perhaps one historical.
I do think that the proposed changes are definitely a good start. Back in the old KBS days, everyone used the Chicago broadcasts as the "official" standard, and since everyone was watching along more-or-less the same timeline, we were all able to have a great time discussing the current episodes. Even outsiders (like myself) were usually only a week or two off of the Chicago broadcast, and that allowed us to participate as well (in at least a limited manner).
But, with the demise of Chicago's KBS broadcasts, everyone's gone off to haphazard viewing, and with each and every one of us viewing different episodes at any given time, it makes a happy group discussion awfully difficult.
So, I think that establishing a standard of sorts will certainly help to restore a sense of community around here.
I've never even attempted to use "DramaFever," so I'm not sure how I'll adapt (I'm somewhat spoiled, I guess, by the Korean programming I get on DirecTV). But, since watching anything on my dinky computer screen becomes something of an ordeal after more than a few minutes, I wonder if there's any way to burn the DramaFever dramas onto a DVD, and then play them back on my regular television set?
BTW, I voted "both," for although I generally favor historicals, they're sometimes so few and far between that I've got nothing but contemporaries to watch. And, while there are many marginal contemporaries out there, the little gem that pops up now and then makes the effort more than worthwhile.

I've watched both Dong Yi and Yi San on Dramafever and it was a good experience for both dramas. There were NO broken links like I encountered while watching on mysoju - Dramafever has a LOT of contemporaries and also some of the better historical. No KBS but then I've sort of lost my enthusiasm for KBS due to their treatment of our WOCH - I think it would be a good idea to have BOTH historical and contemporary dramas - probably one historical and a couple of contemporaries since there are so many more of the modern dramas than the historical. It would be great if we could get back to the 'old days" of many members watching and discussing the same drama. I look forward to that happening -- soon - ;D

You're better off connecting your computer to your TV and using that as your screen for watching the dramas. You wouldn't get good quality video if you tried putting them on DVD. No KBS but then I've sort of lost my enthusiasm for KBS due to their treatment of our WOCH DramaFever has a small selection of KBS dramas on their site so there would be more MBC & SBS dramas added to the board. You never know though, with more and more K-Drama fans watching their favorites online these days, this could get the attention of KBS and we could see a bigger selection being made available via DramaFever.

I agree, that is how we have our set-up at home. Bo PS - And here is an overview I found of how to do it! I don't know how good it is, as I am not a techhie! If someone sees better instructions, please post them!

That would be wonderful if it worked. In fact it would be so wonderful I would pay you to burn the Drama Fever onto a DVD. I would be very, VERY willing to send you American Dollars. I would much prefer watching my TV rather than my Computer.

Thanks for the responses so far. Please continue to share your thoughts on this. We value your input. You wouldn't get good quality DVD's from online stream videos.

Bo Actually Bo,you can download stuff even if they are streamed,at the same quality as they were uploaded in the first place. There is software available which enables you download, for example, youtube stuff on to your harddisk.I seen my brother-in-law do it.You have to wait until the streaming is completed then you save the whole thing on to your computer.

Actually, I don't think Kathleen could do it with her level of techiness, but I'm sure Mikey may be able to use your info. That said, I don't think it's strictly legal. LOL.
Thanks, Elaine.

I used to use a Stream Recorder, WMRecorder, all the time to record VODs from KBS. As far as I know, it is legal for personal use, i. e., you cannot distribute your recordings. I tried it once on one of those streaming drama sites once, and it only recorded the video, but not the subtitles, though.

I am as far from being a techie as I am from being a rock star - so - I think there is a separate program to download the subs - I remember back when I was getting some tech advice from the Philly board, there were certain instructions on how to do it . . That was so long ago though, I don't know if it would be relevant at the present time. I just content myself with watching the streaming and if I miss something, go back and rerun the ep.I can enlarge the text on my computer and I have a decent size monitor so I am able to watch it without problems. Hope everyone will be able to do that - soon - ;D
