Considering the fact that we are facing the possible end of channel 41 as we have known it and subsequently the end of this forum, it seems rather strange that more people are not voicing their opinions in this regard.

Hello everyone,
Its sad to see the state of affairs now. Is there no way to know who is actually in charge at ch41? It seems that even the few names mentioned on this board as being associated with the channel no longer have any more contacts there. I hope we can manage to get some word, official or otherwise, about where things stand now. Are we really at the end of the road for this channel?
Someone mentioned ending the board as well. I would hope we can retain it as a meeting place for ppl seeing such shows on other sites etc. after all we do have ppl watching shows not being shown on kbc...
Anyway...does seem like kbc might not be coming back..

This situation doesn't look good. It would be so depressing to lose ch. 41. I don't mind if they don't talk to us for a while. I just want them to get their problems worked out so life goes back to normal.

Hang in there, Elaine--I think most people are taking a wait-and-see attitude for now. It does look like we may not get the KBS shows back, but that doesn't mean we'll lose Channel 41 entirely. We'll have to see if they sign with one of the other Korean networks.
And the forum isn't going anywhere, so don't worry about that.
P.S. Glad you're okay, brenda.

Well, I got this email over at the board email account. I don't know how comforting it is, but Gilbert Sebenste, thank you very much. Bo My name is Gilbert Sebenste, and I'm a frequent poster/digital/analog TV guy over at the AVSForum over-the-air Chicago boards. I figure you'd want a little more info about WOCH-CA analog channel 41 as I know it. Please feel to post this message verbatim on your message boards.
I know about WOCH-CA 41's transmitter failure. I do not know when it will be back. They had a similar problem last year, and it took them over a week to get it back on due to a tube failure. Yes, analog transmitters (and digital ones) still use tubes! I do not know what the problem is this time, but it has to be a major failure. A simple cable problem is usually easy to fix. The fact that you can see it on channel 13.1 probably means their transmitter is shot.
WOCK-CD, their digital station, broadcasts with 300 watts on channel 4 from the Hancock Center, with a severe signal null to the north to protect analog channel 4 in Milwaukee, when it was on the air. WOCK-CA has since applied to remove that null, but they need a new antenna to make that happen. Here is their theoretical service area, using an antenna outdoors, 30' above ground level (per FCC standards):
www.fcc.gov/fcc-bin/FMTV-service-area?x=DC1316845.html
However, for most folks, the effective range is less than 40% of the area shown, due to most antennas being indoors, which reduces your signal by 50%-90%, and interference from man-made and atmospheric sources. If you want to get WOCK-CD, get the antenna outdoors, or as closse to a window as possible!
WOCH-CA 41 *does* have a construction permit to go to 8 kilowatts (8,000 watts) digital on channel 49, which on a digital tuner, would resolve to 41-1. That signal would be less directional and easily get out 40 miles with an outdoor antenna to the north and west...and 20 miles or more with an indoor antenna...again, if you are north and west of the Hancock Center:
www.fcc.gov/fcc-bin/FMTV-service-area?x=DC1319842.html
If I were all of you, I would want 49 to sign on as soon as possible! Using a larger outdoor antenna, you can likely exceed that range shown. I have an excellent UHF antenna in my attic, and can get WCHU-LD 44 (resolves to 61.1 and 61.2) in DeKalb:
www.fcc.gov/fcc-bin/FMTV-service-area?x=LD1318780.html
Even though the FCC says I shouldn't be able to get it.
If I were channel 41, I'd forget 41 analog and go straight to 49 digital. That signal would be more potent than 41 analog, even though it has much less power (with digital, you can use much less power to cover the same amount of distance, by a factor of 20:1 on UHF). In other words, 150 kilowatts on analog is roughly the same as 8 kilowatts on digital on UHF. I hope this helps!

Gilbert, if you're still visiting us here, thanks so much for taking the time to share that information with us. Very interesting stuff. And I agree with you; if they've got a major equipment failure that will be expensive to fix, I'd rather that they just scrap the thing and put all of their resources into getting the digitial signal upgraded and running ASAP. That's not going to make over-the-air viewers very happy in the short run, since we could be without a broadcast signal for months, but in the long run it's the smartest move. (And besides, without any regular Korean network shows to broadcast, it's not like we're missing anything right now anyway.)
From the filings on the FCC website it looks like the construction permit was approved a couple of months ago. So hopefully the work is underway already, or at least close to underway.

This board is the greatest! thanks to everyone who is contributing to let the rest of us analogs know the real scoop on what is happening to Channel 41. one little question that may or may not have any bearing on what is going on. As i check on the daily status of 41 on my digital tv and get the 'no signal' message (weep weep) - there is also the letters WMAQ in the upper corner. any significance??

Thanks, Gilbert!
For me, that first map is depressing. It knocks me out of range. The other 2 look good, as does their original map on their website. Hope they get things worked out soon.
